I been thinking about a .38 special revolver for ease of use and good stopping power that my wife can handle. Anybody else got any suggestions or know a cheap place to get them would be appreciated. |

If she can pull a slide back, a Glock 19 in 9mm is hard to beat. Managable recoil and 15 rounds of 115 gr. Cor Bon JHP+P will do the trick. Gunbroker sometimes has them used for a reasonable price, or they use to anyway. Michael |

If for home, I would go with a 20 ga. pump or auto. Alot easier to hit something with shotgun. |

I think a shotgun is certainly the way to go and it should be in a convenient place and loaded at all times or have the gun and shells together for fast loading. Of course that should also be where kids could not get it even though most kids whose families have had guns know the rules of safety. This idea of having a gun for protection and having the gun locked in one place and the bullets locked in another place makes it absolutely worthless! By the time you get it loaded it is too late. You have more chance of hitting something with a shotgun as opposed to a handgun. |

hard to beat a short 20 in. 12gauge pump in my book for anybody but if you don't already have one the judge would definately be a good start

Smith&Wesson makes a little Automatic pistol called the bodygaurd that is pretty dern handy. I think they only make it in 380 and I know a 380 ain't much but they make personal defense rounds for a 380 that are BAD NEWS! It comes with a laser sight too. |

New england arms pardner pump 20 guage youth model. Under 200.00 new and considerably better for a home defense than any handgun. |

If a lady can handle the recoil of a 10 guage shotgun, she probably won't need a gun in the first place for defending herself. She would be plenty stout. Clayton, I bought my wife a Rossi 357 a long time ago, with a short barrel. We keep it loaded with 38 +p ammo and recoil is fairy light. That gun can be found used for a little over 200.00 and is surprisigly accurate. She could always practice with 38's and keep it loaded with 357 mags at home. |

Thanks for all the replies. I had thought about the shotgun but in a close situation a long gun is much easier to wrestle away from someone. The .357 is also a good idea but in a dark bedroom good luck getting a second shot off after the flash and bang. I think what I decided is a model 64 Smith and Wesson .38. Im hoping to find one used. Does anybody know about the places where you buy used police revolvers i mean are they reliable or do they sell anything they get there hands own. |

Try looking on CDNNsports.com, it's a web based wholesaler. They usually have some good deals on all sorts of stuff. I have used them in the past and they are excellent. Your gun usually ships the same day! Michael |
