The water was cold and murky today, and more filled with trash than she had ever seen it. Seemed the losers top side didn't know how to use refuge bins, but did they really have to use her home as their garbage disposal? It was disgusting, and none of the junk was of any use for her. She let use a bubble of frustration as she settled herself up lazily against a barnacle encrusted pier pylon. She watch half interested as a dark red octopus appeared from the gray deep and wedged itself into a hidey-hole. Her stomach grumbled.

Pip turned her blackened eyes up towards the surface where a monotone light shown down from. The surface of the water was agitated with thousand upon thousands of rain drops hitting them again and again. Now would be a good time for her to go up, she wouldn't have to worry about keeping her skin wet in this deluge, and maybe the others would be too miserable in the rain to noticed if she filched some food.

So, Pip pushed herself off from the pylon and lazily rose to the surface, not even bothering to beat her tail or legs to propel her. She surfaced like a crocodile, only top of head down her nose appearing. She looked around; no fishermen, no one above on the docks had noticed her; she was met with the smell of wet concrete, cooking food, and people; lots of people. Luckily her smell was one as good as a human's; she felt pity for those halflings and shifters that had the curse of a good nose.

The dolphin girl found her way to a rusted ladder that took her up into a parking garage, here she slipped through a hole in the chain link fence and tip-toed her way over to where she kept a place to hide clothes. As unfortunate as it was, she couldn't afford to walk around naked anymore, as she had as a young child. With a scowl she looked down at her chest were newly emerged breasts had appeared, gray nipples hardened against the cold. With a grunt she pulled the loose and dirty t-shirt over her torso, and pulled up the ripped skirt to cover her hips. She looked ridiculous; damn her tail for having her have to wear skirts.

The young girl made her way out of the parking garage and onto the bustling streets; she was immediately engulfed by the people walking around and no one took notice of her. Perfect, she wouldn't have it any other way, and set a course immediately towards the Market.

Beggers and hobos lined the outside like a picket-line while the cars whizzed by them as if they were nothing more than part of the scenery. Some of them looked up at her as she passed by, but none tried to ask nothing of her; they could probably tell she was one of them. As soon as she was past them though, it was like she entered another world.

Scores of tourists and locals covered the cobble-stone streets or lined the sidewalks to get out of the rain and wait in line for food cooking. The market was bustling, full of buyers and sellers, local artisans and farmers selling their wares. Seafood, clothing, jewelry, flowers, art, cheese, desserts; everything the heart desired was on display, and it could be yours, for a price.

Pip, not having a solar to her name, could not hope to even think about buying anything from this cornucopia; she would have to steal, and right now, she had a hankering for salmon.

As she entered the inner sanctum of the market, which was still open to cold air and rain, she found the crowd that was always gathered, as the fish-men yelled and whooped and through huge salmons through the air to the amusement of the crowd. But Pip was not amused, all she could see was her dinner flying through the air. Her stomach growled again. Maybe if she could sneak around to where the fish-men's backs were turned, she could grab something small; a flounder of bit of tuna perhaps.

Pip made her way through the crowd, still noticed, though a large bison-man did looked down at her perturbed when her tail hit him. She hurried on her way, towards the sides of the fish stall; there, her prize. Staring at her with dead fish eyes it beckoned her; a lovely looking trout. Probably caught from one of the fresh water lakes in the area; a real treat. She ran her tongue along her spiky teeth and felt her mouth water. She looked from side to side to make sure no one was watched, and she reached out to grab it.

Shopping around for goods was always a bother. She'd been sent to Seattle with a shipment for one of the customers and had managed to rent a small flat to use whenever she went between places. Unfortunately some people took the fact that it wasn't always occupied to break in. Everything in the flat at this point was solidly bolted to the ground and locked up. Coming in this time she had chased out a couple humans and ended up breaking a bottle over one of their heads. Said human was now in the alley passed out and waiting to recover from being hit. With the deliveries finished it was time to grab some food so that she had something to eat, and possibly pick up a few other things for herself.

She was picking out some shrimp to fry up when she saw the halfling. Dolphin halflings weren't exactly common. She watched in amusement as she walked through, tail occasionally swaying behind her. Where did a dolphin halfling even live? Serenity reflected on this briefly. Her only experience with them before this had unfortunately been a rather drunken night where she'd slept with one when she'd been told that doing so was better than breathing. Serenity didn't remember enough to know if it had been proved true or not.

She realized that the halfing was about to steal the shift and quickly stepped up. "Hey, that's not paid for!" The fish stall's merchant turned his head, eyeing them both with suspicion now.

Pip could feel her mouth watering to the point of drooling as her webbing fingers reached for the rainbow deliciousness that was the trout. She became distracted by thinking about how wonderful this would taste; maybe she could even find some crabs or yummy seaweed and have a feast. But just her hands wrapped themselves around her prize the world was shattered by a blonde woman who Pip hadn't realized had come behind her. The woman called Pip out, and one of the fish vendors turned to look at both of them, unsure of who had spoken. Pip had to think fast so as not to get caught red-handed; she thrust the trout outwards, reaching towards the vendor, "This lady was trying to take one of your fish!" She said, trying best to imitate the voice she had just heard, "I grabbed it from her though!" She said, and the plopped the fish back down into its icy bed.

Then she turned to the woman, hands on her hips, and she scrunched up her face into one of disapproval, "You should be ashamed of yourself! You look like you could pay for a thousand fish!" Pip glared at the woman, now getting a good look at her. What a bitch, couldn't she see that Pip was hungry and obviously in no condition to be able to pay for anything?

The dolphin girl did not know if this show was good enough to convince the vendor, though he stared at them both slack-jawed, unable to figure what exactly was going on. Pip knew she had to make herself scarce and fast, so she quickly moved away and began sliding through the web of people.

Her stomach burned with hunger, but now her heart also burned with anger. The nerve of that woman; Pip hated people like that, their noses so far up their own asses that they were convinced their shit didn't stink. There were so few people around here that understood Pip and those like her, and took pity on them, or even empathized with them. She sighed, feeling tears of anger sting her eyes as she made her way towards the exit of the market. Maybe she could go try and raid some crab traps instead for lunch, though she hadn't had much luck with that recently either.

The fish was jerked towards the merchant, trying to cover up her actions. Serenity had seen the surprise and anger in that moment. She didn't like that someone had interrupted her attempted theft. She didn't care. If she wanted the fish the halfling would have to work for it the same as everyone else. Sure, some might say that thieving was working for a meal, but it didn't benefit anyone else. Work tended to do something for others in exchange for the food they bought afterwards. Her jaw dropped at the sudden turn around. Her the thief? The dolphin girl was clearly the one responsible! She was the one holding the fish! Serenity was a good couple feet from her, and had other supplies on her. Why would she steal it?

The vendor didn't look like he was going to take a chance with either one of them, his brow furrowing to an even darker expression. The sharp words surprised her. A thousand fish? She wasn't made of money. Taking in the halfing's appearance again Serenity frowned. Perhaps she did look that rich to someone who looked like they'd been dragged over a land dump before being stuffed through dry cleaning. Still, there was a limit. The fish merchant moved over. "Both of you, get out of here! I don't want no thieves hanging around." Her jaw dropped. He bought it? Well, only partly it seemed. He was blaming both of them for the theft.

The suspicious eyes of the other merchants didn't do Serenity any good. She had no choice but to leave now as well. So much for her shrimp. Angry she looked around until she spotted the girl heading out of the market. That street rat owed her for keeping Serenity from her shopping. Following after Serenity smiled at the violent images in her mind, glad it had been a couple weeks since she'd trimmed her claws. They'd be perfectly sharp for this. Serenity might pretend to be a good upstanding citizen, but the beast from her teenage years was still alive and well.
