OK I aint brought a base antenna for about 20 odd year and that was my Sirio 1/2 wave what I got from Trucking and paid 25 quid for it :) which I still have and using but its getting old now , well my birthday is due in a couple of months and my daughter siad what do ya want Dad so I thought its about time to get another antenna so thats what I'm getting, now the questions as I aint brought a new one as I siad for along while here is the the short list of what I was gonna get Sigma Venom 5/8, Silver Rod High Gain 5/8, Thunderpole Hi Gain 5/8 first question is there any difference between these makes of antenna or are they all basicly the same or which is the better one out of them, 2nd question is it worth getting with the small radials that are fitted to some of these antennas(only cos some say in the shop ads with radials they are easier to SWR it in with them on ). I know you will all say get a A99 or a Gainmaster but 1 I'm on a budget and 2 I cant expect my kids to pay for a exspencive antenna also, TBH I would buy another Sirio but a 5/8 wave this time but Ican only seem find those at a high price and as I siad its my kids buying it so any advise for a cheapstake like me ;) on what one to get
cheers and beers Martin

The only thing is some say the Venom is a bit weak and made from thin alli, are you useing one yourself Mr PORKY ? .
I wish I could get one of the antennas I used back in the late 70's at lease I knew they was strong but at that time they was very very exspensive and still are even when you find a good second had one :ermm:

Hi Martin.I use antron 99 for homebase has stood up to all the gales and have no problems with it,though personaly a silver rod is just as good, think something like 1DB gain on antron ,but also antron pulls in a lot of crap. Also if not to expensive doesnt hurt as much in the pocket when it needs replaced.. :D

Yep Karen that is one reason I dont want to pay (well my kids will be LoL) for a exspencive antenna, I mean back in the old days thats all we had TBH was stuff like Silver Rods and GPA's and the daddy of them the Avanti Sigma 4, but those old antennas were made strong with good materials so all I want to get is the best and strongest and cheapest LoL of the old style antenna thats about now so it might be one of those Scorpion 5/8 wave ones that CHEETAH siad about, also Iam not in the open so high winds are not really a problem as such, well my old Sirio GPE 1/2 wave is still up there after 20 year and still working sort of its getting old like me HaHa!

OK, been thinking about getting a new antenna for a while now, and my kids was gonna buy for my birthday which was recent so I finally got one it 5/8 wave Venom, and to top it off I got it from a supplier who was just 10mins from my house and I didnt even knew he was there I found him on ebay selling 5/8 wave Venoms and saying he was in North London, thought thats handy but North London is a big place LoL but at lease its wont be miles away any how I message him to fined out where he was he came back with the address 10 mins from my house "YaY!!", so got in the car and went to him cos he siad I could pay cash not worth messing with ebay stuff paypal and all that, so my daughter came with me as she was paying haha!!, and when we get his house and I went in he had his radio shack and all the stock in his office in the back garden anyway we talking about differnt things like radio stuff and that then got talking about family and he just mention he had to take his daughter to Girls Brigade, so I siad where abouts when he told me its only the Girls Brigade that my Mrs and dauhgter are officers there and his daughter is in my daughters group small world, so the guy's name is Jan and he is a rather large Swedish geezer he is a M0 amateur(think his call sighn isM0JMP not sure ) and has his own antenna/radio bussiness heres his web site www.uk4x4centre.co.uk and he also has the ebay shop on this number 07985170973 so give him a call or look on his site he does alot of stuff
any way he put the antenna up today for me for no charge as now a familey freind LoL
