Water Regions The Vanishing Sea - The Vanishing Sea, to the Northwest of Orisend, gets its name from the unfortunate tendency ships have for vanishing in those waters. No ship that has sailed into the Vanishing Sea has ever returned to Orisend, though whether this is due to massive monsters or the neverending storms over the sea, no one knows. Icy Straights - The Icy Straights are often falsely accused of having a misspelled name. In reality, the name is a pun for the straits-there is only one reliable path through the strait, which happens to be a very straight path-everywhere else is almost guaranteed to be frozen or infested with Drenger pirates or warships. The Lost Ocean - The Lost Ocean is so named because it used to be a larger landmass attached to Drenger, which was lost to the sea hundreds of years ago. Artifacts from the lost continent will every so often wash up on the shores of Drenger, but many believe the Lost Ocean to be cursed, and refuse to sail past Drenger's West Coast. The Sea of Kings - The Sea of Kings has historically been the site of some of the largest naval battles on Orisend, with Drengen, Salaadish, Herebin, and Gerien navies consistently taking part. Hundreds of ships and thousands of sailors have lost their lives on these waters, and monsters live in these seas hoping for another battle to spill tasty humans into the sea. The Dry Sea - More of a bay than a sea, the Dry Sea is so named because none dare drink even a drop of its water-the water itself is poisoned as a result of an ancient, incredibly powerful spell. It is also, however, so thick with salt that even some rocks float on the surface. It also happens to be Herebi's principal port, despite the poisoning. Kingbay - Kingbay is Gerier's most important port, which also serves as the nation's capital. Kingbay is commonly referred to as impenetrable-every smaller island around the bay houses a tower armed with cannons that fires down on any enemy ships that approach. Serpent Lake - Named both for its shape and for the nest of serpents that make their home in its deep waters, the Serpent Lake is traversed only by the bravest of sailors, trying to reach the most fertile region of Gerier in the South. Bay of Spikes - The impassable Bay of Spikes is named for the thousands of spikes sticking out of the water. Only the thinnest ships can navigate this bay, though there is generally very little reason to. Defender's Bay - Defender's Bay is a heavily fortified bay shared by Gerier and Kriegal. Both sides of the bay are lined with fortifications designed to repel each other's ships, though an uneasy truce currently exists between the two nations, allowing unmolested travel by ship. Lake of Tears - Kriegal and Marshall's shared Lake of Tears is the largest lake in Orisend, separated from the ocean by an incredibly thin strip of land. No one remembers where the lake's name came from, though the frozen island in the center is home to legions of undead. Neither Marshall nor Kriegal lay claim to the island, and neither will risk the men it would take to liberate the island from the creatures. Frozen Bay - Despite its name, the Frozen Bay is mostly water. It possesses a history almost as bloody as the Sea of Kings. Its name actually comes from the hundreds of frozen corpses that wash up on the shores of the countries that share a border. |
