As Knights become more renowned and more skilled, they are elevated in rank by their lords. These ranks come with certain privileges, not the least of which are the Five Knightly Brands, which serve two functions; one, to help identify a Knight’s rank, and also to empower the Knight in question. The following are the ranks available for Knights, along with the rights afforded to each rank. Squire – As the lowest rank, squires are unbranded, but once attaining the right to squire, it can reasonably be assumed that the Knighthood is in that squire’s future. Squires learn the basics of said Knighthood, to include principles of valor, chivalry, combat, and Essence, from a more experienced Knight, though the exact teachings may vary by nation. Squires are capable of using 5th Tier Spells. Squires are also sometimes called Unbranded. Branded Knight – Newly knighted, a Branded Knight has been entrusted with enough power to confidently serve alone. However, it is at this rank that a Branded Knight must choose his Lord. Branded Knights may possess one of the Knightly Brands. Knight Errant – Those who have proven themselves as skillful Knights are promoted to the rank of Knight Errant. Knights Errant may take on a Squire at this rank, but are not required to. Many Knights never make it beyond this rank, be it due to a lack of skill, or due to untimely end. Knights Errant may possess two of the Knightly Brands. Lord/Lady Knight – Knights of this rank are typically famous within their nation, and their names may be known to especially educated members of other nations. Lord/Lady Knights are given land within their nation and the right to start a House of their own. Lord or Lady Knights may possess three of the Knightly Brands. High Knight – High Knights are those of the highest caliber, known throughout every nation for their valor and skill. High Knights can use up to the 1st Tier Spells at maximum, and are afforded every expense in construction of their weapons and armor. Those incapable of using Essence are far more physically powerful than those who can, being roughly three times as strong, fast, durable, and agile as Unbranded or Essence Capable Knights. High Knights may possess four of the Knightly Brands, and usually possess no additional Knight Brands after; however, at this rank, one may petition to gain the Final Brand, enhancing their capabilities even further. Brands Brands are given to Knights as they climb through the ranks. Brands are symbolic, burned-in images proving one’s talent to the world. Some Brands even have special abilities, and use a type of magic whose explanation has long been lost to history. Of particular note are the Knightly Brands, markings burned into a Knight’s flesh that grant him or her greater power-for those capable of using Essence, it allows greater access to spells, and for those incapable of using Essence, it forces the body to process Essence in a way it can handle, thereby increasing the physical capabilities of the bearer's body. While there are many brands, only these 5 are known to every nation, and these are the most powerful. With no Brands, a Knight can channel only enough Essence to cast 10 5th Tier spells. Brands expand the bearer's magical ability, allowing access to higher leveled spells, as well as more possible uses of spells as the bearer accumulates more Knightly Brands. Each brand is listed below. Keep in mind that the lowest rank, Squire, does not have ANY Brands. Knightly Brands One Brand - Those with One Knightly Brand are capable of naturally casting up to 4th Tier spells, and may cast as many as 10 spells of that Tier. They may also cast spells one tier higher if they purchased the spell slot. Two Brands - Those with Two Knightly Brands are capable of naturally casting up to 3rd Tier spells, and may cast as many as 10 spells of that Tier. They may also cast spells one tier higher if they purchased the spell slot. Three Brands - Those with Three Knightly Brands are capable of naturally casting up to 2nd Tier spells, and may cast as many as 10 spells of that Tier. They may also cast spells one tier higher if they purchased the spell slot. Four Brands - Those with Four Knightly Brands are capable of casting up to 1st Tier spells, and may cast as many as 10 spells of that Tier. Mythical spells may NOT be used without the Final Brand. Final Brand If an individual with four Knightly Brands acquires the Final Brand, it allows him or her to use Mythical Tier spells, and allows them to cast 5 Mythical Tier spells, or 25 spells of the Tier below. Even with the Final Brand, all Mythical Tier spell slots must be purchased. |
