He turned out a limited but dazzling portfolio of works, with his landmark masterpiece being "Morning on the River Crescere," one of the most recognizable portraits in the Mesonyktian art canon. Sydow also cut a rather dashing and Byronic figure, serving as a Mesonyktian Knight in his 20's before becoming a Freebooter, traveling across Kosmopol to engage in struggles he believed in or found compelling, something he attributed to coming of age in the last stages of the War of the Siblings. He disappeared abruptly in 2665 SH while traveling in Hesperia in the company of a Raionese noblewoman he was rumored to have seduced. Mathias Aumann (2701-2774) -- illustrious symphonic composer, with over 35 four-movement symphonies, 2 operas, and over a dozen concertos each for violin and piano to his name. Considered the "Titan of Classical Music" by Mesonyktians, Aumann was famous for his thunderous, powerful fourth movements, going against the established tradition of using the third movement as the emotional apex. Aumann was also infamous for his reputation among polite society, often ignoring social etiquette when mixing with the elite of his day. He also championed the use of the piano as a "showpiece" instrument, leading to the downfall of the harpsichord in his native land. Johanna Mayr (2840-2904) -- a beloved Mesonyktian novelist who often set her works in the Mesonyktian countryside or among the commonfolk. Her prose is noted for having an extremely dry and sarcastic wit, extremely clean and without unnecessary ostentation, and her habit of making obscure allusions or analogies. Her novel "Emma the Thief" is held up as a standard of mechanical precision among both Mesonyktian literary critics and writers. The Mayr Award is named in her honor and is awarded by the University of Sommerende to the "best" writen works published in Kosmopol. Otto Sternberger (2930-3011) -- considered the first and greatest Mesonyktian science fiction writer, and a founding father of the genre. Sternberger's stories often dealt with themes of humanity, and the loss or validation thereof in the face of future challenges and technologies. His vision of the future was one where dehumanization was the greatest threat and fear, and often featured devices such as androids, reincarnation via stored memories, and other ideas centered on examining the concept of the soul. Sternberger was also noted to be a deeply spiritual man, and unlike many contemporary writers, he experienced a good deal of recognition and financial success in his own lifetime. Quite a few of his novels and short stories would find their way into Prut cinema screens during the second half of the 30th century. Felix Mahlau (2974-) -- founder and lead guitarist of the band Villain Asylum, and the creator of Symphonirock, the predominant form of Mesonyktian pop music over the last 2 decades. The genre consists of a four or five man rock band being backed by a symphony orchestra, alternating between standard radio-length songs and full-length concerto pieces. Their debut album "Thanks for Playing" set a sales landmark inside Mesonyktia, and established Mahlau and Villain Asylum as a dynamite musical act and concert ticket. Science & Economics: Elias Tauber (2707-2802) -- influential Mesonyktian economist and philosopher, who coined the term "Unencumbered Capitalism" and laid out his proposal for it as an economic system. Tauber argued in his seminal work "The Acquisition of Wealth" that an "unfettered" market was the best and most efficient force for regulating economic growth and development. He also argued that governments exist only to maintain the sanctity of people's property and lives from unlawful seizure or harm, and that over-regulation of financial matters would only slow growth and frustrate business development. His philosophy was deeply influential in the economic history of his home nation. Steffen Landauer (2803-2899) -- perhaps the greatest Robber Baron of the Mesonyktian industrial movement, Landauer was in his day one of single richest men in the world. He built the monolithic Standard Steel corporation from a single workshop into one of the largest, wealthiest companies in Kosmopol, owning a virtual monopoly on the lucrative Mesonyktian steel trade for over a decade in his prime. He was infamous for his vicious business practices concerning rivals, often selling product at-cost or even at a loss if trying to drive competitors out of a particular market, before rapidly increasing the retail price after securing or cornering said market. He owned a quartet of opulent mansions across Mesonyktia and Neo Prutenia, living as a virtual king in the second half of his life. Caspar Seyfried (2881-2942) -- Mesonyktian engineer and test pilot, who was the second half of the Prut-Mesonyktian team that constructed and flew one of the first powered aircraft. After marrying the Prut engineer who designed the flyer, Seyfried went on to serve as the lead pilot for his spouse's aeronautic firm. He did much to establish the Mesonyktian ideal of the pilot as the "Hussar of the skies," given his legendary bohemian lifestyle and audacious flying style. Andreas Starker (2946-) -- a former Mesonyktian Air Force pilot, Starker was the driving force behind a trio of friends that founded Teufelhaus Aeronautics, the leading Mesonyktian aircraft manufacturing firm specializing in high-performance aerial vehicles. Teufelhaus serves as the primary supplier of air superiority fighters to the Mesonyktian armed forces, and Starker, serving as the company's CEO, has risen to become one of the foremost Mesonyktian captains of industry. Sabine Rorer (2969-) -- a leading mathematician and engineer in Mesonyktia, Rorer is a key figure in the Mesonyktian space exploration effort. In addition to designing a number of unmanned exploration vehicles, Rorer is the co-project lead on the Mesonyktian side of the proposed joint Prut-Mesonyktian mass driver program. Military & Politics: Rudolph Fleischer (2599-2664) -- the "Founding Father" of Mesonyktia and the single most revered figure in Mesonyktian national history. Fleischer was born into a knightly family in Sommerende a scant few years before the outbreak of the War of the Siblings, and came of age during the conflict. He joined the Order of St. Ragna at the age of 14, and found himself the overall commander of the Loyalist forces after the Fall of Baselburg and the death of the Basel. Despite exhibiting brilliant generalship and an innovative flair for detached, hit-and-run style mobile warfare, Fleischer's efforts were not enough to turn the tide against the Silberbund, although he was instrumental in gathering the Loyalist surviving leadership together to agree to the armistice that ended the conflict. He, along with Emil's daughter Maria Augusta, was a key force in convening and steering the Synod of Sommerende, acting as an aloof arbiter to the discussions and only rarely interjecting his own opinions into the philosophical fray. With the Synod in gridlock, a group of former court officials and military leaders approached Fleischer about the potential of him taking the throne as a a new, restored Basel, and reigning over West Prutenia/Mesonyktia as an autocrat in the style of Emil the Dark. Fleischer rejected the offer, preferring to let the convened voices of the Synod decide, forever cementing his legend in Mesonyktia. He served as first Hochmeister of the new nation, presiding with a steady, dignified hand and style of leadership. He remains a paragon in the eyes of many Mesonyktians, and is the only Pruton leader more revered than Adelbrecht. Jakob Lattke (2621-2670) -- the "Architect of the Komturei," Lattke was the Hochmeister who succeeded Fleischer after the later's retirement from office in 2660 SH. Unlike the reserved Fleischer, Lattke had a notorious temper and a disquieting tolerance for bloodshed. It was at his behest Mesonyktia perfected the Komturei idea and began to implement it as the interdiction to Neo Prutenian colonial growth abroad. Lattke also antagonized the Neo Prutenians over Baselburg, commencing the back-and-forth skirmishes over the city that would persist for the next century and a half. Lattke did however manage to modernize and expand the Mesonyktian Navy and maritime trade presence, something that positioned Mesonyktia as a first-tier expansionist Wheat power entering the Modern Era. Lattke died abruptly of a "bleeding illness" that is now suspected to be a ruptured aneurysm in 2670 SH, although many historians believe it is likely he was assassinated by Neo Prutenian agents or Silver Heliandist sympathizers. Heinrich Lowenstam (2738-2809) -- better known as "Heinrich the Magnificent," Lowenstam was the Hochmeister who shepherded Mesonyktia's transition from Monastic State to Republic. He is credited with defusing a potential revolution/civil war with his calling for a Constitutional Convention in 2773 SH, previous to which a growing number of Mesonyktians had become increasingly disaffected by the Knight's somewhat aloof style of governance, and desired a voice in national affairs. After a few particularly large riots in several Mesonyktian urban centers, Lowenstam shocked many observers by inviting both the delegates of the Althing and those selected by the various districts to come to Sommerende to construct a national charter to determine the new government. In 2776 SH, after 3 years of careful debate and countless drafts, the Constitution was finished and ratified by the Mesonyktian people. Lowenstam's handling of the entire transition period was compared to Fleischer's earlier example of leadership, and his progressive views set Mesonyktia on the road to becoming a stable democracy incorporating both Enlightenment ideals and time-honored traditions. Wilhelm Isserlin (2918-3004) -- regarded as one of the few modern-day examples of the gallantry and unflinching commitment that made the Mesonyktian Knights what they were. A Ritter-Oberst that served with distinction during the Hesperian Civil War, specializing in daring nighttime raids against enemy-held facilities or garrisons. His views on what constituted the proper behavior of a soldier sometimes brought him into conflict with the commanders of some of the other Freikorps forces fighting in Hesperia, but made him a celebrated figure at home. Unlike many of the iconic leaders of the Hesperian Civil War, Isserlin lived a rather long life and died quietly in his elder years. Anna Keyserling (2952-) -- the current presiding Hochmeister of Mesonyktia, Keyserling holds several Mesonyktian aeronautic records. Originally a fighter pilot in the Air Force, she was selected to be one of the pilots for the Mesonyktian SR-71 reconnaissance plane fleet. While testing a refitted version of the aircraft, she set several Mesonyktian records on the maiden flight, including 1) highest altitude reached in an aircraft, 2) highest air speed reached in an aircraft, 3) longest free-fall in an aircraft both in time and altitude, and 4) highest G's pulled by a pilot without losing consciousness. Keyserling would later go on to circumnavigate the globe without landing while flying solo in a test-bed aircraft in 2982 SH. However, while she is perhaps best-known for her achievements as a pilot, she is storied to be an expert at observing, reading, and manipulating other people. While by no means the most talented strategist or military leader in Mesonyktia, she is rightly respected as Hochmeister given her habit of surrounding herself with talented subordinates and dedicating herself to reading, and successfully manipulating, those that she needs to understand or move. The Character of the Nation's People Faith: "The essence of faith is fewness of words and abundance of deeds." -- St. Ragna "But a faith which cannot survive collision with the truth is not worth many regrets." -- common saying among Ragnaist Inquisitors The Mesonyktians are, by and large, a religious society. Namely and more specifically, they are a Heliandist society, one largely dominated by the Ragnaist Church with the Orthodox denomination of the same faith following behind. To the average Mesonyktian citizen, while his individual zeal and adherence may vary, most would place Faith as a very important factor in their society, and as such the Church and other religious efforts and organizations enjoy widespread and governmental support. Additionally, in Mesonyktian society is often not enough to merely "obey the law;" living your life as an upright and moral person according to the example of the Heliand is stressed. Family and Community: "A friend loves you for your intelligence, a lover for your charm, but your family's love is unreasoning; you were born into it and are of its flesh and blood. Nevertheless it can irritate you more than any group of people in the world." -- Mesonyktian author Mesonyktians deeply protect and rely upon their familial bonds. While the ability to strike out on one's own and earn their way in the world is stressed, deep run the ties between families within the nation. Mesonyktians generally prize the tight relationships forged between kinsmen and their neighbors, which is seen in most schools of Mesonyktian urban and community planning. Fortitude and Honor: "True bravery is shown by performing without witness what one might be capable of doing before all the world." -- Sir Frederich Wolfsbane "There are some things which you cannot do. There are some limits on even a Knight's actions. Never learn these limits. Never accept them. You are a Knight of Mesonyktia." -- first words spoken to each Mesonyktian Knight at his dubbing ceremony "The Mesonyktians will never bend. Break, perhaps, but never bend." -- foreign assessment of the Republic There is a near-universal cultural appreciation and worship of a still, quiet kind of dignity in Mesonyktia, which in the most dire moments takes the form of an unshakable fortitude that stirs the Mesonyktians to stand for what they believe in and hold dear, regardless of consequences or the odds arrayed against them. This has led to them sometimes being perceived as a stubborn and prideful people who would fall into the pitfalls of "honor before reason," but this is likely a simplification and exaggeration of their culture's appreciation for those who choose not to compromise their deepest beliefs and oaths. Mesonyktians also tend to be forthright in their dealings, at least in stereotype, to the point they are sometimes portrayed as being painfully frank (and not without precedent). They also tend to be viewed as slow to change or reach compromise with others, but this same obstinate nature makes them fanatically loyal allies who tenaciously defend their oaths of friendship. This placement of value on those who defend their beliefs and oaths also causes them as a society to take a dim view of mercenaries or other people/organizations that are perceived to not hold a "true" allegiance of their own, but merely serve their own self-interest. Tying back into the social importance of families, the idea of oaths made to one's spouse are taken with grave significance and weight, leading to adultery being viewed as a criminal offense in Mesonyktia. At their worst, Mesonyktians can be belligerent, uncompromising, closed-minded, prideful, and violent. At their best, Mesonyktians can be loyal, kind, trustworthy, honest, and behave with an almost illogical decency towards their fellow man. Edited by Urarail, Apr 18 2013, 05:20 PM.

The Steel Cities At the dawn of the Industrial Age, the Mesonyktian government was acutely aware the long urbanized Neo Prut heartland held distinct commercial superiority over the still largely agrarian Mesonyktia. Seeking to harness the groundswell of population shifts as people moved seeking jobs in emerging industrial centers, the Republic undertook an aggressive building campaign to finally "catch up" to the storied Seven Silver Cities that formed the core of the Hanse apparatus and Silberbund movement. They would collectively become to be known as the "Steel Cities" given the materials used and to reflect their perceived lesser status to the jewels of the old Imperial East. However, the denizens of the Steel Cities embraced their sobriquet, using it instead to identify themselves as industrious and made of sterner stuff, as opposed to the "Moonstruck" urban meccas that had existed since the Johannites. Alttor - Originally a border post reclaimed from Neo Prutenia in 2792 SH, Alttor experienced dramatic growth in the 2800's as a major manufacturing center, becoming the headquarters for several heavy manufacturing and military arms conglomerates. During the 30th Century SH, Alttor underwent its "Silicon Revolution," and established itself as the cradle for several major Mesonyktian IT firms. Eisenschmiede - A small hamlet that also rose to prominence in the Industrial Era, Eisenschmiede also served as a "grand experiment" in urban planning, as the town was essentially designed from the beginning of its growth phase according to architectural and city planning ideals of the day. The result was a city partitioned into two halves: one a residential and commercial zone with wide boulevards and plazas, the other a grid-like nest of sprawling factories and steel plants. The city is still known as the cradle of the vaunted Mesonyktian steel industry, with the uranium mining and refinement industry becoming another powerful resident later on in the city's history. Today, the city is also a major site for the aeronautical engineering sector. Schiffsrast - The newer of the two shipping epicenters of Mesonyktia, Schiffsrast was originally constructed to provide the multitude of Mesonyktian trade and exploration vessels striking out into the Megali Okeano an excellent home port with generous berthing sites, drydocks, and warehouse space. The city also has played host to the Mesonyktian Navy for a large portion of its history, and to this day remains a pivotal facility for the construction of Mesonyktian warships. The shipyards have been updated and expanded down the years, which coupled with the large salvage docks make Schiffsrast a city where many ships are born and die. Altherd - The oldest of the Steel Cities, Altherd rose to prominence for its proximity to multiple coal and iron mining regions, and was built upon the mineral industry. The city shares a fierce but good natured rivalry with Eisenschmiede. Weizensitz - A major agricultural depot and rail center for the Mesonyktian farmlands, Weizensitz serves as perhaps the greatest focal point for the receiving and export of Mesonyktian agricultural products. The Grain Market in the city remains one of the largest trade centers in the nation. Given the city's ties with the Mesonyktian agricultural sector, the city also is the birthplace and headquarters for several major breweries and distilleries. Gartentor - The "Gateway to the Riverlands," Gartentor is a city storied for its vast public gardens and close proximity to what many Mesonyktians consider the most idyllic and pastoral sections of the Mesonyktian countryside. While never a major player in the Mesonyktian industrial movement, the city was another "experiment" in urban planning in much the way Eisenschmiede was, but with Heliandist principles regarding environmental conservation at its core. Trost - The smallest of the Steel Cities, Trost is tucked high away in the mountains of Mesonyktia. Originally constructed by the "Robber Barons" of the late 2800's and early 2900's, Trost was meant to serve as a mountain resort "away from it all," and was built with luxury and relaxation in mind. The resorts the city is known for take advantage of the nearby slopes for winter and alpine sports, and the grandest lodges are built with natural hot springs incorporated into their grounds. The city has worked hard to maintain its status as one of the premier destinations for travel in Mesonyktia, with the construction of The Odeon, the largest movie theater complex and first entirely indoor theme park in the country, which opened in Winter 3004. Handelhausen - A former rural market town on a set of crossroads in south-central Mesonyktia, the city rose from humble origins to become a key player in the Mesonyktian beef and manufacturing sectors. The city is sometimes called "Kosmopol's Toy Bin" given the large amount of children's toy workshops both large and small that were established in the city. Schmelzerklause - A once proud industrial city deeply involved in the metallurgical and mining industries, Schmelzerklause has seen better days. Unlike Eisenschmiede and other metallurgy and heavy production based members of the Steel Cities, Schmelzerklause was unable to expand its portfolio and make the transition into a post-industrial market, causing the city to hemorrhage jobs in the late 30th century SH. While the city's leadership have made efforts to stem the decay and economic backslide, the truth of the matter remains the city faces an uphill battle to rejoin its sister cities again under the sun. The Old Cities Sommerende and Letzelicht were the only notably established urban centers in West Prutenia prior to the outbreak of the War of the Siblings. In contrast to the Steel Cities, both Sommerende and Letzelicht have a distinctly "Old Imperial" feel to them in their city cores, and neither was ever a heavy player in the industrial boom that forged the Steel Cities. Today, Sommerende remains both the political and financial capital of Mesonyktia, with its economy built on the back of the banking houses that formed after the loss of the great Hansa families' services after the War of the Siblings. Letzelicht's industries historically were based upon publishing, furniture manufacture, and paper manufacturing, and today are primarily concentrated in the fields of biotechnology, chemical engineering, and pharmaceuticals. Neither of them are counted as members of the Steel Cities traditionally. Sommerende I have stood against heretics and heathens. I have weathered storms and fires. I have endured against time itself. And I have never fallen. -- the Boast of Sommerende, inscribed above the Knight's Gate Sommerende is more than a city or a mere capital to the Mesonyktians. It has been viewed, often simultaneously, down the years as Mesonyktia's greatest refuge, its strongest bastion, its most treasured jewel, the cradle of its art, the seat of all that is great about the Mesonyktian state, Mesonyktia's only true reply to the Silver Cities, and the physical embodiment of the Republic and its ideals. National Mythic or Well-Known Figures: The Harlequin: unknown dates of birth and death, active ~1987 to ~2000 SH The Harlequin was a knight wearing badly damaged heavy armor (multiple arrows and crossbow bolts were reported to be perpetually lodged into the armor), a cloak coated in coagulated blood, and a grotesque harlequin-like two-tone great helm. He/she/it was utterly silent and seemed to brush off all but the fiercest blows. The Harlequin was infamous for a string of brutal murders carried out in what is now Mesonyktia, during which the knight targeted several noble lords, leaving their corpses in public places. It is unknown if it began during his spree or afterwards, but he came to be associated as an Avenging Spirit, punishing corrupt noblemen for some crime(s). Later writers would embellish that he was a knight raised from near-death by a peasant woman crying out for justice against the nobleman who had assaulted her, or alternately was a knight returned from the point of death to kill those who betrayed him. The exploits and myth surrounding the Harlequin caused an explosive growth of the Prutonic Knights in West Prutenia/Mesonyktia, as he was storied to carry their banner. The Harlequin continues to be an iconic figure in Mesonyktia and West Pruton lore, where he usually fulfills a Dullahan/Greek Fury role. Edited by Urarail, May 4 2013, 04:36 PM.

Mesonyktia: From Monastic State to Republic (2648 - 2776 SH) Foundation of a New Nation: Sir Rudolph the Glorious After the Peace of Teutschberg in 2648 SH, the former West Prutenia found itself loyal to an Empire that no longer existed. With the final Basel, Emil the Dark, dead and Baselburg firmly in the hands of the Silver League, the Imperial Loyalists had no legacy beyond the bloodshed and destruction of the War of the Siblings to claim as their own. With the de facto dissolution of the Basel's regime after the war, the last Commander of the Loyalists who saw through the end of the war took control of the remnants of the Basel's government. This man was Rudolph Fleischer, Knight-Warden of Sommerende and Hochmesiter of the West Prutenian Knights Stationed Under the Untempered Lion. In the last decade of the War of the Siblings, the war took a slightly more distinct East vs. West flavor as most of the Basel's Loyalists replacement forces and commanders were drawn from the Western provinces, where the Ragnaist movement first began and held its strongest support base. After the Fall of Baselburg in 2646 SH and the deaths of the Basel, his heir, and most of the Imperial Generals, the Loyalist leadership was assumed by Knights from the West Prutenian lands, with Sir Rudolph being elevated to the rank of overall commander. Rudolph absorbed the remnants of the shattered Imperial Armies into his own Knightly Orders, and valiantly but futilely fought on against the rising tide of the Silver League. Peace was abruptly reached two years later as fighting had ground on in a bloody mire in the Crescere River Valley, with Hochmeister Rudolph pushing for the exhausted Loyalist forces to accept terms rather than continue the civil war. Immediately after the Peace of Teutschberg was declared, a synod was convened at Sommerende to decide how the former West Prutenia should proceed. The hawkish elements, most of whom survived the Fall of Baselburg, pushed for Emil's daughter Maria Augusta to be crowned to her father's throne and to begin immediate rearmament for a resumption of hostilities with the Silver League. This wing more considered Sommerende a capital-in-exile, and the Peace of Teutschberg merely an interbellum lull. The quickly coalescing Ragnaist Church voiced its opposition to an immediate return to war, given the overwhelming need of the populace displaced by the final campaigns, although they also mandated all Silver Heliandists living in West Prutenia convert or be exiled to East Prutenia. A centrist faction, spearheaded by the senior Knights, wished to create a new nation out of West Prutenia, believing the old Imperial institutions too far gone to truly restore. Finally, a radical faction called for the immediate dissolution of the aristocracy, a proclamation of universal suffrage, and the institution of a Republic. With Hochmesiter Rudolph chairing the synod, a compromise was eventually reached. The former West Prutenia was declared the Monastic State of Mesonyktia on January 1, 2649 SH, taking its name from the old term for the region. The new nation was governed by three offices: 1) the Althing, a unicameral legislature with deputies elected by the people charged with making the laws, 2) the Seneschal, the continuation of the Basel and serving as Head of State and nominal figurehead, and 3) the Hochmeister, the Head of Government and overall military leader in charge of the Knights, all of which were unified under Rudolph's Order. The aristocracy, largely depleted thanks to the efforts of the Silver League forces, was effectively disbanded at this time to make way for the new government. Maria Augusta was crowned Seneschal, but she quickly retired from political life to focus on religious scholarship, and would decades later be retroactively considered the first Diviner of the Ragnaist Church. Rudolph was positioned as Hochmeister of the Mesonyktian Knights, and quickly established himself as a moderate who ruled with an even hand and patient manner. Rudolph's most lasting example was provided at the Synod of Sommerende, when a group of Knights approached him with the offer of making Rudolph Basel, and attempting to reconstitute the fallen Imperial Throne. Rudolph declined, instead encouraging to let go of the never-to-be-recaptured past. Constitution and Republic While the office of Seneschal was disbanded/merged with the office of Diviner in 2692 SH, the Hochmeister and Althing continued to be the driving political forces in the land until 2770 SH, when the popularity of Enlightenment ideals had reached a fever pitch, and a movement for self-rule began to rapidly pick up momentum. After a few years of political tension, Hochmeister Heinrich surprised many observers by convening a Constitutional Convention, with the aim of creating a Republic. In 2776 SH, the Monastic State was reorganized as the Chivalric Republic of Mesonyktia, with the government taking its modern form then. The Constitution is considered by many Mesonyktian historians a piece d'resistance of the Mesonyktian Enlightenment, and is treasured as the national charter and held sacrosanct in modern Mesonyktian politics. Legacy of the Geschwisterkrieg: The Komturei System (2648 - 2800's SH) While the War of the Siblings/Forty Years War was over, the tension between the newly formed Mesonyktia and Neo Prutenia was not. For the next 200 odd years, Mesonyktia and Prutenia waged a series of overseas colonial and imperial ventures, each aimed at curbing the others' growth. Occasional skirmishes with the rare pitched battle would also be fought over Baselburg, on the still-tense Mesonyktian-Prut border. It was during this period of national rivalry that Mesonyktia fully realized the Komturei system, its answer to the Prut Kontor. After the vibrant Hansa guilds exploded in the years after the War of the Siblings, expanding Prut influence and trade all over Kosmopol through their legendary Kontor system, Mesonyktia commissioned their own version as reply, with the explicit goal of expanding the Ragnaist Church's reach: the Komtur. Whereas the Kontor heralded Prut presence with their Jaeger regiments and ubiquitous Hansa trade ships, the Komturei announced the arrival of Mesonyktian Knights zealously bent on missions of conversion. This Kontor-Komtur system rivalry was the most visible example of the imperialist struggles waged, but was far from the only one. The Komturei functioned as the primary vehicle of Mesonyktian Imperialism. The typical methodology was for an expedition of Knights to make landfall in a new region, and either convince or cow the local elites and leadership to "ally" with the new foreign arrivals. From there, a Komturei would be constructed, allowing for a more permanent base of operations for the Knights and a port of debarkation for Mesonyktian goods, troops, and missionaries, as well as a facility for shipping native goods and natural resources back to the Mesonyktian homeland. In general, Mesonyktia preferred to remain the "power behind the throne" in its imperial-client states, serving publicly as an "advisory" or "vizier" role to native leadership, while ensuring pro-Ragnaist and pro-Mesonyktian directives were implemented. Conversion of the local populace (usually from the top-down) to Ragnaist Heliandism was a fundamental goal, although acquiring resources and other treasures to fund the operation was also given consideration. In general, so long as the native elites adhered to Ragnaism and the "advice" of the Mesonyktian contingent, the client states were largely left to their own customs and way of life under the watchful gaze but hands-off approach of the Knights. However, if local leadership resisted Mesonyktian directives, the Komturei would transition from its role as a "influence center" to that of a front-line citadel, with the Knights' goal being the removal of the resisting elements. Typically after the successful quelling of such local "indiscretions," Mesonyktia would take a more direct administrative hand in the rule of the client-state, either by appointing a puppet ruler or a Mesonyktian Knight-Warden to oversee the territory. In general though, the Komturei system both proved a reliable counter-force to the Prut Kontors, and a successful mechanism for Mesonyktia to implement their "hands off" methods of imperialism. The Komturei system largely was disbanded from its original function following reconciliation with Neo Prutenia and the de-colonization movements of the 29th and 30th Centuries SH. Detente (2800's SH) However, by the mid-29th century SH, generations had been born which did not know the War of the Siblings from the stories of family members who lived through it, but from history books. With both Mesonyktia and Neo Prutenia emerging as economically powerful industrial strongholds, a reconciliation movement began to take hold, with the Neo Prutenian return of St. Ragna's sarcophagus to Mesonyktian hands proving a highlight of this movement. While no formal treaty of detente was ever signed, the construction of the Alabaster Bridge and the joint declaration of the Condominium of Baselburg are widely regarded to signal the end of Mesonyktian-Prut hostilities, although both nations would continue to be rival-allies in the arenas of business, science, trade, and sports. Industrial Revolution With the Republic quickly proving both a stable and popular form of government, the nation was poised for rapid growth at the dawn of the Kosmopolitan Industrial Revolution. With the discovery of vast coal and iron deposits throughout Mesonyktia, the previously rural nation rapidly transformed itself into a manufacturing titan, so that by 2830 SH, Mesonyktia was roughly on industrial par with the monolithic Neo Prutenian industrial complex. Mesonyktian-produced steel quickly became sought after by many emerging markets, famed for its durability and quality, making it popular choices for both building construction and ship manufacture after the advent of ironclads and other metal-hulled ships. Mesonyktian industrialists also proved extremely interested in improving systems of transit for their products, with Mesonyktia being an early and ardent proponent of railways and zeppelins. Experiment with Communism (2921-2935 SH) In the early 30th Century SH, Communist ideologies had gained several persuasive advocates in Mesonyktian academic circles. Hermann Schubert was a highly-regarded economist and professor who became the spearhead for the Communist movement in Mesonyktia, and he often advocated for more labor-friendly reforms and legislation. He twice-served as a member of the Althing where his politics were often quashed by the more skeptical moderates. However, in 2920 SH, he secured approval for a "thorough investigation" into the merits of Communist philosophy and ideas in governance, and the following year Mesonyktia launched a trio of government-funded communes set up along a spectrum of Communist ideals. The first was essentially a normal Mesonyktian town with a variety of Socialist-minded reforms instituted over time. The second was a "radically" Communist commune organized by Schubert himself, and the final commune was organized as something of a hybrid of the first two. Despite promising results from the communes, the Mesonyktian Republic opted to not institute Communist ideals in governance on a larger scale, citing their disbelief that the local successes could be reproduced on a national level without serious improvements and advances in infrastructure, and also with the disgrace and death of Hermann Schubert following his execution for murdering his wife and her lover. However, the experiment was far from a waste, as a series of major reforms were instituted following a review of the experiment's results. Namely, these new legislative measures included: 1) expansion of the state-funded education system through university level, 2) universal free healthcare, 3) Fair Wage laws, 4) the "Common Good" law, which basically says the government has the right to repossess a Mesonyktian company if it is grossly abusing the public's trust in a harmful way Wars Abroad (2935-2965 SH) Present Day (2965-present SH) Edited by Urarail, Oct 11 2013, 11:33 PM.

Cultural Note: Raven and Lion Stories The first Raven and Lion stories appeared shortly after the fall of the Rutgerite Dynasty, but did not truly become widespread and popularized until the years after the Forty Years War. In short, the Raven and Lion stories contrast the stereotypical natures of the East and West Prutons respectively, which in time became a contrast between the characters of Neo Prutenia and Mesonyktia. The stories are typically aimed at children (although they can serve as allegorical figures in more complex literature), and feature a Raven (representing Neo Prutenia) and a Lion (representing Mesonyktia). The Raven is typically portrayed as intelligent, cunning, at times avaricious, and witty and the Lion is typically portrayed as valorous, stubborn, prideful, and fierce. The stories generally revolve around the Raven and Lion trying to overcome some trouble they have been confronted with, although sometimes they are pitted in opposition against each other. They are generally very popular as far as children's literature is regarded. Raven and Lion Tapestries As a subset of the Raven and Lion stories, they inspired a set of tapestries originating from some point in the late 25th century SH, although a second set inspired by the first was completed in 2740's SH. Both sets were completed by Mesonyktian artists and are well-known in Mesonyktian Art History. Both sets are also done in the mille-fleurs style popularized by Ardan weavers. The original set is a series of 3 tapestries, set at sunrise, midday, and sunset, and feature Adelbert and his queen flanked by a Mesonyktian Lion and Pruton Raven. In the sunrise tapestry, the Raven is portrayed as ascendant over the Lion, and positions are flipped in the sunset tapestry, while the animals are on equal level in the midday tapestry. The second set features a beautiful young noblewoman in front of a pavilion in the center of a lush garden, attended by a handmaiden, Lion, and Raven. In the first 5 tapestries, the Lady is standing and is regarding an object in her hand. The objects are, in order, a scepter, a golden coin, a mirror, a letter, and finally an hourglass. These represent, respectively, Power, Wealth, Beauty, Adoration, and Mortality, and the Lady regards each as far as striving to master them. In the sixth and final tapestry, she is seated in front of the pavilion, and a Unicorn, representing Possibility, has joined the Raven and Lion. The phrase Um mein einziger Wunsch is engraved over this sixth tapestry, and its meaning remains obscure. Offered translations of the phrase include By my will alone, According to my desire alone, and My sole desire, but no true meaning has ever been established. The first set was donated to a large art museum in Zelisch while the second set remains at the Sommerende Grand Gallery. Cultural Note: the Knight's Tarot A long-standing cultural practice and pastime within Mesonyktia, the Knight's Tarot dates back to the Johannite Era of Old Prutenia. The Tarot is a deck of 40 cards, each with a different bird on it. When used, the deck can be used to foretell people's inner thoughts or character, or to forecast future events. Five cards are drawn in a hand, which are then used to "read the unseen." While very few take the Tarot seriously, it is a time-honored game inside Mesonyktia. Sample Cards: -Eagle: Nobility/Victory -Blue Jay: Cunning/Deceit -Mockingbird: Intelligence/Breakthrough -Cardinal: Pride/Change -Owl: Predatory/Endings Edited by Urarail, Apr 19 2013, 11:43 PM.

Military Administration: Victory does not always rest with the big guns. But if we rest before the big guns, then we are lost. Immanuel Macht once said the Prut shall inherit this world because they must, and because they can. To Herr Macht I have this to say in reply: the Mesonyktian hosts make his first claim understandable, and simultaneously make his second claim false. -- General Paul Dannecker The modern Mesonyktian military operates in much the same way as their Prut neighbors. Which is to say, the military mostly follows the citizen-soldier model, with every Mesonyktian citizen training and serving for 24 months beginning the day after their 18th birthday. Following this, each citizen is marshaled into the reserves, and will be recalled to drill for several weeks at scheduled intervals. Tactical Reputation: Mesonyktian commanders are often described by, and fondly embrace, the label of "dirty cheaters." By reputation and track record, Mesonyktian forces will avoid direct battle at all costs unless holding an overwhelming advantage of some kind on an opponent, and their stratagems are often dedicated to either creating, increasing, or exploiting said advantages. The Mesonyktian military also gleefully insists that collateral damage is in fact a myth, and often makes extensive use of heavy ordinance and rolling air strikes in support of their operations. However, despite their self-embraced air of tactical deviousness and wanton destructiveness, the Mesonyktians will always honor an opponent's attempts to surrender or strike a truce, and are known to treat Prisoners of War humanely and in accordance with all international statutes. The Mesonyktians also abhor torture of POW's, although this is in part because they have found it ineffective in the past and thus unreliable, which in their minds is almost as bad as being immoral. Mesonyktians also mistrust Mercenary and Freebooter troops, universally preferring to field their own uniformed men sworn to the service of the Republic. Current Doctrinal Philosophy Currently, the active duty manpower of the Mesonyktian armed forces is lesser than that of the other "Great Powers" of Kosmopol, in particular Neo Prutenia, Rusichland, and Shiggiristan. Due to Mesonyktia's smaller population base from which to draw on recruits, the Republic's current philosophy is to aggressively push the bleeding edge of emerging technologies and pursue automated assistance for troops on the ground, and its R&D budget is commiserate with this desire. The current Mesonyktian philosophy also favors decentralized, mobile warfare and the land forces of the Mesonyktian military are trained in equipped with this school of thought at the fore. It would this be an incredibly rare thing for Mesonyktian commanders to organize their men into units such as a corps or army group in the modern day. Mesonyktia in generally favors aggressively pursuing an advantage in the skies of a given theater, as the Air Force is viewed as Mesonyktia's equalizer with the numerically larger powers around it. To this end, many Mesonyktian maneuvers center around seizing and controlling air superiority and air supremacy in a given battle-space. The Mesonyktian Navy is an extension of this philosophy, with the capital ships being either carriers to bring the might of the air assets to the field, or fast battleships to guard the carriers and deal with shoreline and near-coastal anti-air defenses from distance. While their Prut neighbors have commented to Mesonyktia's command staff before about the pure fantasy of air superiority, much less supremacy, on the modern battlefield between two equal powers, the Republic's forces continue to be an active force in pursuing both combat and non-combat aeronautic advances. Previous Major Conflicts: Forty Years War, Raionese-Mesonyktian Conflict Iconic Military Units/Forces: -This is largely the Mesonyktian domestic view of what they consider their "elite" forces. Other nations may have different opinions. -Late Medieval/Early Modern eras: Mesonyktian Pikemen (think RL Swiss Pike formations, and their penchant for steamrolling straight ahead over/through an enemy line; storied for their discipline and painfully simple yet devastating tactics -- and like the RL Swiss Pikemen, they were eventually upstaged by Prutonic Landsknecht forces), Mesonyktian Knights (ultra-heavy cavalry), Grand Bombard Cannons -Colonial/Imperial eras: Ships-of-the-Line, Heavy Frigates (known as "Gun Frigates" in some corners of Kosmopol), Mesonyktian Knights (updated and deployed as Hussars), The Rifles (elite skirmishers deployed in advance of the main infantry columns), the Artillery Corps -Modern Day: Mesonyktian Knights (updated and deployed as special forces operators), Mesonyktian Air Force air superiority squadrons Traditional Battle Cry: "Zerhackt sie!" -While literally translated as something close to "Cut them down!", the true meaning of the phrase is somewhat more vivid in its description, and is essentially a verbal expression of homicidal ecstasy and hysteric rage combined into a oral exclamation proclaiming one's immediate need to engage in sadistic bloodshed -Was often shouted en masse by Mesonyktian troops shortly before unleashing a charge. Was also often accompanied by heavily armed and armored Knights beating their blades or gauntlets against their shields. Stereotypical Virtue Known For: Discipline -It was not so much Mesonyktian soldiers were "invincible" or the "most skilled" on the battlefield, but rather they possessed unshakable discipline in the face of any odds. It was said that they even died in an orderly fashion. Stereotypical Flaw Known For: Stubbornness -Mesonyktian soldiers will sometimes become fixated on accomplishing some task, leading them to cling to positions and objectives that would perhaps be better left abandoned. While this makes them resolute in the face of the enemy, it also can prove dangerous and even lethal when their obstinance gets the better of them. Note: Both these Flaws and Virtues are Stereotypes, earned early on in Mesonyktia's history. As such there is much exaggeration and outdated imagery involved. The Grand Game: Mesonyktian Strategic and Tactical Nuclear Policy The Mesonyktian military command likens the possession, usage, threat of usage, and counter-usage of nuclear weaponry to a game played on a massive scale. Owing that chess was "the Game of Basels," Mesonyktian command often utilizes chess analogies and terminology when communicating with its own forces in regards to the readiness state of both the nuclear and conventional forces in times of crisis. Readiness States, Code Term, Strategic Arsenal State, Conventional Forces Readiness State - DEFCON 5 -- FAIRY CHESS Lowest state of readiness Normal readiness - DEFCON 4 -- OPENING MOVE Increased intelligence and surveillance watch, strengthened security and counterintelligence measures Elevated readiness - DEFCON 3 -- QUIET MOVE Increase in deployment readiness Air Force assets ready to mobilize within 15 minutes - DEFCON 2 -- SEALED MOVE Launch-on-warning; next step is progression to release of strategic arsenal Combined military forces ready for deployment and engagement within 6 hours - DEFCON 1 -- RESIGN Nuclear war imminent Maximum ready state; all deployed forces ready for engagment Edited by Urarail, May 6 2014, 10:13 PM.

National Anthem Lyrics 1. :| 6. "Grüß Gott, grüß Gott, Herzliebste mein! Was machst du hier im Bett allein?" |: "Hab dank, hab Dank, mein treuer Knab'! :| 11. Wo kriegen wir sechs Träger her? Sechs Bauernbuben die sind so schwer. |: Sechs brave Husaren müssen es sein, Die tragen mein Herzliebchen heim. :| 12. Jetzt muß ich tragen ein schwarzes Kleid, Das ist für mich ein großes Leid, |: Ein großes Leid und noch viel mehr, Die Trauer nimmt kein Ende mehr. A faithful soldier, without fear, He loved his girl for one whole year, For one whole year and longer yet, His love for her, he'd ne'er forget. This youth to foreign land did roam, While his true love, fell ill at home. Sick unto death, she no one heard. Three days and nights she spoke no word. And when the youth received the news, That his dear love, her life may lose, He left his place and all he had, To see his love, went this young lad... He took her in his arms to hold, She was not warm, forever cold. Oh quick, oh quick, bring light to me, Else my love dies, no one will see... Pallbearers we need two times three, Six farmhands they are so heavy. It must be six of soldiers brave, To carry my love to her grave. A long black coat, I must now wear. A sorrow great, is what I bear. A sorrow great and so much more, My grief it will end nevermore. Edited by Urarail, Apr 21 2013, 10:38 PM.

Once Brothers: Prut-Mesonyktian Politics While the Prutons have split into two separate nations, it is an inescapable fact for many nations in the Notolian sphere that the Prutonic bloc is still a cohesive force in diplomacy, warfare, trade, and scientific advancement. Well in place in the years prior to the Hesperian Civil War, and officially codified in its wake, the Prut Meritocracy and Mesonyktian Republic represent a miniature history lesson of the Wheats in general: once at each others throats as furious rivals, now working together to push the bleeding edge of human advancement. While culturally the nations have evolved along different paths, they have often shown their willingness to cohesively work together in a variety of ways. Arms Sales While the Prut Meritocracy does not engage in international arms sales to foreign nations or organizations unless explicitly authorized by plebiscite to aid a friend of the Meritocracy, their Mesonyktian neighbors to the west represent a semi-exception this rule. Considered a "common market" by the Prut people and a near-constant R&D partner for their various weapons projects, Mesonyktia not only can engage in free exchange of arms with the Prut (should they prove interested), Mesonyktia also represents the only seller of Prut-derived goods in the international market. Of course, the Mesonyktians are only too happy to render the due salad unto Caesar, ensuring that while the Prut never engage in open marketing themselves, they see a constant tidy profit as the Mesonyktian manufacturers pay out royalties on co-developed gear sold abroad. Fight Club "Fight Club" is the moniker for the airspace over the bay north of Baselburg along the Prut-Mesonyktian border that is frequented by fighter squadrons of the two nations. In "Fight Club" any aircraft my signal its intention of entering as a combatant to engage in a mock duel with any other aircraft in the local airspace. While in Fight Club, affiliations and ranks do not matter; any pilot may challenge any other pilot of either nation. The commanders of the air bases on both sides of the border overlook this "anomaly" along their air defense grids, feeling it is not only a nice morale booster for their fighter jocks, but also a source of premium in-flight training. Occasionally, the Fight Club is co-opted for organized war games, with Mesonyktian and Prut squadrons facing off to test their abilities against their opposite number. Mesonyktian squadron ready rooms at their border bases are known to keep running tallies of both their own pilots' records as well as those as Prut pilots that they are able to identify. Numerous personal and inter-squadron rivalries have taken on near-infamous reputations in the Mesonyktian ranks over the years. Edited by Urarail, Nov 5 2013, 11:19 PM.
