Character Name: Balin O'Connor Species: Human Gender: Male Age: 28 Sect: Detroit Police Department Appearance: ![]() Clean cut when he's not disheveled, muscular when he hasn't been drinking, and he looks suspiciously similar to Travis Haley. He usually dresses as plainly as possible, and keeps his department-issue soft kevlar vest on when he's coming on or off of a shift, which makes him look a little chunkier than usual- Detroit is the most dangerous city in America, after all. He has a tattoo on his left arm to cover his old bullet wound, but he usually covers it up. Derangements: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Personality: Incredibly charismatic and friendly when he isn't working. Balin is down to earth, laid back, and easy to get along with. When people ask him about things he doesn't want to talk about, he just lets the subject slide, or deflects it with ease. He rarely ever gets angry at anything, but when he does, he most certainly holds that grudge. He is more than willing to tell or teach anything to make you a better person based on his experience, but knows when somebody is higher ranking on the totem pole than he. Under stress, however, he is a completely different animal. When the chips are down, Balin stops joking around and smiling, or showing much emotion at all for that matter. Afterwords he might tell you what he was feeling but in that moment, the only thing on his mind is how to most effectively solve the problem he is facing. He almost shuts off everything other than the caveman part of his brain. He can ask questions and process feelings when he's not busy dealing with danger. As a police officer, Balin is quite fed up with the department's corruption and politics, but knows how to operate within them to still get justice. Corruption works both ways, and he is more than willing to twist things 180 degrees to put criminals in jail. When dealing with suspects in this manner, he is quick to insult and demoralize them so that he can make them squirm. Haven: A shitty industrial building where he stores his equipment, weapons, and staked neonates he's managed to pick off. Background: Balin was technically born on international waters as his parents immigrated from Ireland on a Cargo Ship, but is considered an American citizen. Although his parents intended to travel around for a while before they settled down, Balin's premature birth settled his family down in Detroit, where the rest of the small O'Connor clan lived. As they say, it takes a village to raise a child. As he grew older, times became harder. The rest of the family moved back to Ireland as crime became greater and the jobs became fewer. By the time Balin graduated high school, his father died in a traffic accident and his mother was already working double shifts at the GM plant. Balin joined the Army despite his mother's protests of the war on terror being in full swing. Balin graduated Ranger school at the top of his class. Almost immediately afterword, his unit was deployed to Afghanistan. The majority of their time was spent hunting Taliban forces that were harassing civilians in the area. It was here that Balin picked up Arabic and a serious case of PTSD. He came home right at the end of his contract with a hole in his shoulder and a purple heart to show for it. Luckily for him, it was in the VA hospital back home that he met his wife, Sarah. She was the nurse unlucky enough to be stuck with a bedridden Ranger still in alpha male mode. Balin's charisma paid off; They were married not four weeks after Balin was released from his physical therapy. They didn't have a lot of money, but they made up for it with their love for each other. Things looked promising after that. Balin was able to use his pention to help support his mother and became a police officer. After a preticularly harrowing undercover debacle involving a llama, a clown, and a kilo of coccaine, Balin made detective. Between him and his partner, Cole Johnson, nobody killed anyone in Midtown and got away with it. That was, until Balin's life went back to being shitty again. One night after a double shift, Balin came home to find his wife on the kitchen floor, her throat slit. To this day, he still claims that he did see the murderer and shot them four times on the way out the door. No one in the department can prove it, or cares to. His partner decided it would be best if they worked alone, since Balin wouldn't give up his wife's murder case. Detroit turned out to only get rougher as time went on. His pursuit of his wife's killer only led him deeper down the rabbit hole, introducing him to a vampire known as Leslie. For some reason, they connected, and he became her ghoul. This only seemed to bring more chaos and violence, and soon he was suspected to be dead. Before he had a chance to square everything away, Leslie disappeared. It took a few years of drinking, violence, and other vices before Balin finally pulled himself out of the gutter. Now faced with the reality that vampires were real, he realized something as the blood bond to Leslie broke. Vampires are fucking dangerous. Balin's attention quickly shifted away from finding his wife's killer and into trying to find and kill any vampires that he could. Balin was moderately successful at best. Balin managed to capture a shovel head, which helped him return to his ghouled state. Through the years, he patiently and carefully hunted down any vampire that he could, with a combination of cobbled together gadgets and a little inside knowlage. Over time, he managed to build up quite the arsenal and a rumor or two on the streets. He never managed to snag anyone important or kill anyone powerful, but he always figured this was to his advantage anyway. The less that the Camarilla, Sabbat, and S.E.C.T. knew about him, the more low hanging fruit he could snag, and the more lives he could hypothetically save. He never goes for a target he doesn't think he can get away with, and goes through painstaking steps to hide his presence in Lemuria- but he isn't stupid enough to assume that he will be left alone forever. Sooner or later, Balin knows he will be dragged back in, and he only hopes he's prepared himself enough. Notes: Balin can speak English and Arabic. Iron Will (3pt Merit) When you are determined and you mind is set, nothing can thwart you from your goals. You cannot be Dominated, nor can your mind be affected in any way by spells or rituals. However, the Storyteller may require you to spend Willpower points when extremely potent powers are directed at you. Vengeful (2pt Flaw) You have a score to settle, incurred either during your mortal days or after your Embrace. You are obsessed with taking your revenge on an individual or group, and it is your overriding priority in any situation where you encounter the object of your revenge. You may temporarily resist your need for vengeance by spending Willpower point. Nightmares (1pt Flaw) You experience horrendous nightmare (daymares?) every time you sleep, and memories of them haunt you during your waking hours. Sometimes the nightmares are so bad they cause you to lose one die on all your actions for the next night. (Storyteller's discretion). Some of the nightmare may be so intense that you mistake them for reality. A crafty Storyteller will be quick to take advantage of this.
