Trouble in heaven. He didn’t know what. The voice that woke him led him there. Yoshiki didn’t know the year, didn’t know anything. He tried not to ogle the place as he walked in. So much had changed in the centuries that he had been at rest. Would he learn it all and catch on? Would he displease the other angels for what the voice told him he must do? He saw the visions of the current Brightlord. He was a good man, but his sins must be punished. Yoshiki didn’t want to be placed in this position.

He walked into the palace, a place he once called home. The guards and other angels eyed him with curiosity, but no one stopped him. As a superior, his radiance would be far brighter than their current Brightlord. He was an angel of old. Kamijo was but a child to him. He remembered when Kamijo became an archangel. It was such a long time ago.

Yoshiki was dressed in a more modern fashion than what he wore centuries ago. He’d adopted black colors, toning down his radiance. A long, black coat and sunglasses completed the look. His skin shone with brilliance and his eyes were still adjusting to the light of heaven, so the coat and glasses were somewhat necessary.

He walked into the sitting room, the path still familiar, to where he sensed Kamijo’s presence. He wasn’t alone. He didn’t want to have to publicly shame him, though. The curly haired Brightlord was sipping wine and talking to a younger angel. Yoshiki instantly noticed a key feature in the sitting room that hadn’t changed. His piano. The crystal grand glimmered in the light and seemed to call to Yoshiki just as his mission did. It was still there. This brought a small smile to his lips. Even n his absence, no one moved his glorious piano. His fingers were itching already.

When Yoshiki entered the room, Kamijo tensed. He stopped speaking, mid-sentence and gasped. The wine glass in his hand dropped to the floor and his jaw dropped. A superior, here? The trouble with the war wasn’t that bad, was it?

Kamijo quickly rose to his feet, sending Ren away so the two of them could speak in private. His heart was pounding and there was a lump in his throat. If one of the superior angels had awoken, it must mean he hadn’t been doing a good enough job as a Brightlord. He had been trying so hard, though. If he hadn’t lost Taemin… and now he had Youngbae back… He thought things would work out. Apparently not.

He went to Yoshiki and went to his knees before him, bowing his head low. Would the superior kill him? Would all his angels be destroyed? Certainly not Ren. Anyone but sweet Ren.

“Yoshiki-sama…” He started, trying to keep himself composed. “It has been such a long time. I hope you have rested well…”

Kamjo didn’t know what he could say. He clearly was in some serious trouble. There was no way talking out of it.

The glass shattering to the floor brought Yoshiki out of his reverie about the piano. He looked over and saw the young Brightlord walk over and nearly prostrate himself before him. He sighed and held out his hand, beckoning him to rise. He could see the worry on Kamijo’s features and he wondered if he had any idea how bad things were.

“Kamijo-chan. It certainly has been too long. I never thought I would be awoken. It also pleases me to know that you were selected to become Brightlord as my heir. However, the voices have awoken me.”

Yoshiki had concern on his face as he looked at Kamijo. He didn’t like being the bearer of bad news or upsetting anyone. He’d rather just sit at the piano and make everyone smile and feel good with his music. But someone has to take control here. The voices believe that someone is him.

“I have been shown all the events that have passed since I was sent to rest.” He walked to the couch and took a seat, hoping Kamijo would join him. “There has been so much…so much war on earth. And now…this city…the war between our two great races. It’s revolving around your actions, Kamijo.”

Kamijo-chan? No one called him that. But, then again, it was Yoshiki. He could call him whatever he wished. It felt demeaning, though. With his head lowered, he went to sit on the couch opposite Yoshiki and listen as he spoke.

“But, Great One, I don’t understand. I’ve done everything in my power to keep heaven intact and to spread goodness on earth. My angels—“

He started to defend himself and then stopped. He could see the look on Yoshiki’s face. He’d seen everything through visions. He would know already everything Kamijo had done. What he didn’t know what Kamijo’s intentions. Kamijo’s heart.

“Forgive me. Everything I have tried, I have done solely to protect heaven. Even if it meant sacrificing my angels.” He looked down at the floor, thinking of those he’d lost.

“Everything?” Yoshiki shook his head and stood up, almost walking over to his piano. He looked back at Kamijo, at the confusion on his face.

“Kamijo, you… you’ve broken one of the cardinal rules.” He said, looking at him with pity. “I wasn’t awoken because of poor leadership. I was awoken because the Brightlord is a hypocrite. We tell our angels not to fall in love with humans. DO you know why? Humans are fated to love one another. It is the only way for their race’s cycle to continue on earth. Even one seemingly insignificant human could be fated to another and an angel interfering could throw off the balance. Kamijo, you’ve done just that. This is why the demons prey on this city. Your love for a human produced a child. Half human, half angel. Such a child should not exist. His powers…could be greater than yours. And there is no one to train him or teach him to control them. You’ve unleashed something on earth that the demons now want. Raw, untrained angel power. By creating that child, even through love, you have endangered not only him, but our great race.”

He scowled down at Kamijo. “This is why the voices have awoken me. To end this war you have started.”

Kamijo sat silent, thinking on what Yoshiki said. He never considered that his son was the reason the demons flocked to this city. It was all his fault. He was a failure.

“Yoshiki-sama…” He said, taking a deep breath before looking up to meet his piercing gaze. “What can I do?”

All this time he thought he had been doing well. He tried not to interfere with Karyu’s life. Maybe he should. Maybe he should find a way to teach his son how to use his powers. Perhaps that was one way he could help. But spending all that time away from heaven would not be suitable for a Brightlord. Perhaps Yoshiki would be able to assist with the Brightlord duties. After all, he was the prior Brightlord.

Yoshiki frowned. This job was certainly not a fun one.

“You are hereby demoted from your position as Brightlord. Your service to heaven will keep you from being cast out, but you are stripped of your title and your rank as an archangel, as well. All archangel powers I must also take from you. You must now continue the rest of your years of service as the gate keeper.”

He could see the radiance Kamijo had diminishing as he spoke, the power flowing out of him. His hair even lost some of its sheen. Kamijo looked defeated. Yoshiki hated having to do this to one of his fellow angels.

“However, I… if there is any part you can play in regards to your son, I will see to it that you will be included.” He smiled a little, not sure what else he could do to ease this blow.

Kamijo bowed his head, taking his punishment with grace. He could feel his powers leaving him. It made him feel empty inside, hollow. Silent tears rolled down his cheeks and he didn’t know what would become of him. His thoughts were on all those he tried to inspire. What would they think of their Brightlord now? Broken, defeated, laid to punishment for his crimes. He was a nobody now.

Yoshiki offered him a chance to still have contact with his son and Kamijo looked up at him with glistening eyes.

“Thank you… Brightlord.” He smiled weakly and bowed respectfully.

Yoshiki dismissed him and he left the room, heading back to his quarters to gather his things. Oh, no. What would he tell Ren? The beautiful angel wouldn’t want him now. Not now that he had been severely demoted. If he lost Ren…he would have lost everything that mattered to him.

Brightlord. Here he was again, taking the title and all the power into his hands again. Yoshiki dismissed Kamijo and turned to look at the piano that once brought him so much joy. Slowly, he walked over to the instrument, his fingers itching. It had been centuries since he’d played. After bringing such sadness to another angel, he needed the relief that could only be brought through music. He sat on the bench, fixing his long coat behind him, and let his fingertips hover over the keys.

Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes and let his fingers finally touch the keys. He played, his hands and fingers knowing right where to move, fluidly, to match the emotion that had been building in his heart and mind. Centuries of sleep and rest only to be woken and break someone’s heart. And the dread and thrill of the path that lies ahead. A new life as Brightlord. A new city. A new set of angels and demons to conquer. He played out every emotion, angels around the palace hearing and gathering at the music. If he can’t win them with words, he’ll win them with this.
