WARNING! A new Wii Update has been released, version 3.3 This update is designed to get rid of hacked saves. This update was more than likely deliberately made to prevent the Twilight Hack and the Homebrew Channel. If you value keeping them, you will NOT update. It has been CONFIRMED to make the Twilight Hack obsolete. There is rumor that the Homebrew Channel will continue to work if you ALREADY HAVE IT, but I am not entirely sure. Nonetheless, please be careful. AGAIN, DO NOT UPDATE YOUR WII, AND PLEASE READ ABOUT THE SUBJECT AND KEEP INFORMED. THIS MAY BE A SEVERE BLOW TO WII HOMEBREW! Update: There's been an update on the situation. By this point, this warning is likely obsolete and any damage has already likely been done. However, is a second chance in the works for anybody who has already upgraded to 3.3. Keep in mind that this is NOT a reason to update your system, please refrain from doing so unless you have no interest in keeping your Wii as a custom open system. For anybody who has already updated to 3.3, here is an excerpt from Wiibrew. "Congrats to tmbinc and tehpola for finding a combination of two bugs in the code that Nintendo added that — when combined — allow us to fool their check into ignoring the TP hack. More info will be forthcoming — I still wouldn’t rush to update my system, anyway." We're lucky that an exploit has been found. Nintendo likely won't update the firmware for quite a while longer, so this is a second chance for anybody who wants to ensure they have and keep homebrew without hardware modifications. However, like they said, this isn't a reason to update your system. Just ignore this unless you're already at 3.3. Edited by DeathTankZwei, Jun 17 2008, 10:32 PM.

Thank you for moving this to Announcements for me. Please keep this topic bumped so that nobody accidentally updates their Wii. Let's prevent these accidents. |

To be honest, I'm kinda done with homebrew on the Wii(so far everything I can do on Wii, I can do on DS) so I went ahead and deleted my homebrew stuff and updated my Wii. I'm sure a lot of others are still wanting to homebrew though, or use the stuff they already have, so it's good to have a warning like this. Thanks DTZ. |

Don't be too quick to give up on homebrew if you already have it. The future may hold very innovative ideas using the unique controls. Personally, I myself am more interested in the actual homebrew than emulation or piracy, as I already have a CFW PSP. |

Ok, I really dont have a problem getting rid of the homebrew channel. It's just a bunch of shitty versions of emulators that are 15 times better on the pc. I just want to know if the VC/Wiiware games I already have will still work afterwords. |

I'm not updating my Wii anyway, even though I haven't done the hack. I'm contemplating if I want to. So I'll keep it on an older version to see if it bricks or not, then try it. |

This isn't just about piracy, Hoops, and it certainly isn't about cheating. This is a shame, the Wii looked like it was ready to compete with the PSP. On the bright side (the only bright side), this retaliation will probably influence them to make ISO emulation possible. They previously stated they would not emulate that to prevent Nintendo from attacking Wii homebrew. Unfortunately, that has happened and so a PlayStation emulator may not be too far off after all (although I could care less about emulating that on the Wii, and it'd probably suck anyway). If you want to play the newest games on Wii, you'll probably be forced to update to run them. They may also force updates on the Wii Shop. HOWEVER, I find this unlikely as it would eliminate potential sales from those who can easily get these things for free. It would be an exceedingly dumb move on their part, so I wouldn't worry too much. Again, I'm not telling anybody NOT to update their Wii. I'm warning them not to update until they understand the ramifications of doing so. Soon, the manufactured Wii's will have this new firmware, and only existing Wii's will be able to do this without opening their Wii, unless some new exploit is found. The Wii you currently have has just become a less common commodity. This may mark a decline for Homebrew, as it will become less common and easy to do so. However, there still may be custom firmware in the future. The idea of custom firmware is to grant all the (good) features of updating to the latest official firmware, but allowing you to keep an exploited system. Don't be too quick to update, as there may be a chance you'll regret it later. However, if you're the kind who spends $500 on Wii Shop stuff and has 20 Wii games right now, you'll probably be happier just updating and not dealing with any problems and reading. Me though, like I said. I probably won't be playing a game that requires the new firmware too soon, so I can wait things out and see what happens. I'd much rather wait for a custom firmware to come out than update right now and wish I didn't. I'm the kind of person who is much happier with an open system and custom content, so I know I'd probably live to regret it. |
