Just beat the game a few minutes ago, and I'de thought I'de write a little review for it.

First off and foremost this is coming from someone who has played and beaten the original FF7 and has watched Advent Children. In my opinion, Crisis Core is a prequel that lives up to the FF7 name (unlike Dirge of Cerberus). It tells of the events 5 years before the original Final Fantasy 7, a past that has not been told ever before...until now. Along the way you will meet many new characters, and even explore a few new places! So, lets get on with the review.

Graphics [10/10]

All I have to say is wow. These graphics must push the PSP to its limits. The graphics are sharp, crisp, colorful and vibrant. Textures are carefully detailed, and Visual Effects are absolutely top notch. Characters Models and animations are smooth and very nice to look at. FMV's match Ps2 quality and are very sharp and fluid on the PSP screen. I suggest you take a look at some pictures on Gamefaqs to understand how great this game looks on such a small handheld. However, I did notice some in-game scenes that seem to have been recorded, and then pasted in the game as a video instead of a in game cutscene. This was kind of odd to me (they must have run out of room on the UMD), but it only occurred once so I will not dock points for that.

Music [9/10]

The music is absolutely fantastic, matching hollywood quality, this game has the best soundtrack out of any PSP game in my opinion. There are returning themes (such as Aerith's theme, for example) and various new songs that you will listen to along the way. I did not find any particular song in the game to be bad, but I docked one point for the lack of returning themes, there are way more new themes then old themes and I just wish they returned a bit more of the old ones. The battle music is now a heavy metal mix, as well as most boss fights. The music matches perfectly the mood and the environment around you. You will be touched by the music, and I hope there is a soundtrack CD available for this game.

Gameplay [7/10]

The gameplay was generally good. As a FF7 fanboy would expect, there are tons of mini games to be found within the game, awaiting to be played as you cross the storyline. However, this time around Square Enix has introduced "Side Missions". There are 300 of these missions and they can earn you items, get you deeper into the storyline, and if you beat all of them, you get to face a secret somebody *wink*. The battle system is ok, but its not up to snuff with the original FF7. I found that I was just mashing X most of the time, and materia was not all that much of a factor in this game. However, I was playing on normal, and I have not played on higher difficulties yet. Still, I thought the battle system was just a bit shallow, I wanted something more strategic. Oh well. There are still many kick ass boss battles and summon's in this game however.

Story [10/10]

The heart and soul of Final Fantasy, and Crisis Core delivers story line wise. I will not spoil anything, but I can tell you with much confidence that the story is very deep, very nostalgic, and very, very good. As I said before, you will be meeting old characters (Cloud, Aerith, Yuffie and possibly more *wink), and there is new ones as well. If you ever wondered what the LOVELESS play was like back in the days of the original Final Fantasy 7, well then you can now figure it out, as Crisis Core's plot actually somewhat revolves around this play (a certain villian loves this play, and he plays a intricate role in the plot). At some parts of the game, I nearly shed a tear. And no, Aerith doesn't die yet.

Its hard not to spoil anything, but just please, get this game and find out the story for yourself, it is SO much better that way.

Overall [8.8/10]

You guys may think thats a low score after how much I've just lusted about this game, but I docked it down to 8.8 mainly because of the battle system, which is the only part of the game that I thought was So-So.

But I play FF's for storyline and characters, and man this game just delivered to me. If you loved Final Fantasy 7, you will love this game. Hell, I might go as far to say that this game is worth picking up a PSP for. Its seriously good

You mashed X?

While I did hit X a lot, I utilized quite a bit of materia. Costly Punch ftw.

Meh, I didn't really like this game. Never ended up finishing it, in fact I sold it D: Too many cutscenes (albeit beautiful cutscenes), button mashing, not fun for me.
