Nintendo's Biggest Misstep

An Animal Crossing: City Folk Review
By Longhorns747

Animal Crossing: City Folk, is an excellent game. It is the best Animal Crossing game to date, I highly recommend it to anyone, and it is already one of my favorite games of all time. However, it is the biggest mistake Nintendo has made since the Virtual Boy. They clearly have proved that they had zero care for this game, and with all of the talented programmers, this was probably put together in less than a month.

My one question for you Nintendo: What the hell were you thinking?

You have said you don't want to compete with the 360 and PS3, and this game shows it. You could have made it compete with Playstation Home, it could have been a more embracing experience than Xbox Live, but no Nintendo, you decided to copy and paste random things from past games into one "New" experience.

Shame on you Nintendo, shame on you.

But really, I can't dwell on this too much, so let's get right down to it, I did say this was one of my favorite games right now. The core game is there, and it's spectacular. You enter the game as a new member of a small village with fun neighbors, and your own small house. You meet the local shopkeeper Tom Nook, who graciously gives you the house to live on on a loan. After doing some chores for the raccoon look-a-like, you are free to do whatever you want, no set goals. This is when Animal Crossing really comes alive as you are allowed to do whatever you want. Want to go fishing at Midnight? Go ahead, as long as you can stay up for it. And therein lies the crux of this game, the fact that it is tied into a real life clock that affects the town around you. Different events happen at different times, not only in the game, but in real life. For example, certain fish only come out in certain seasons, same goes for bugs. Certain clothing styles will only be sold seasonally, and there are even real life holidays such as Halloween, Toy Day (Christmas), Bunny Day (Easter), etc... This is what makes Animal Crossing great, and extremely addictive.

But it doesn't stop there, online modes also add an incredible amount of fun and replayablity. Going online consists of going to a friends town and doing everything you could do alone, but now with a friend. There are tons of possibilities, and there is tons of fun to be had. Also, making money is made much simpler with online due to the fact that you can trade items and fruit for money.

This is pretty much what is in Animal Crossing: City Folk, with the exception of the new City. The City is an area with stores and places where things that you couldn't find in your town normally occur. There is a department store with extremely expensive items, the Happy Room Academy building which rates your houses, an Auction house, the Theater which allows your character to express motions, and a few other stores as well.

That paragraph above it what is new in the Wii version, everything else has been done before, this is my problem with this game, and with Nintendo. This has so much potential in it, as I mentioned before it could have been Nintendo's answer to Sony's Home. It makes me so angry to think that Nintendo really thought that they could pull this game off as a full sequel. Really, the only excuse for this is pure lazyness, they have the talent, the money, the time and the resources to make something more than this. It's been 3 years since the DS Animal Crossing game came out, thats more than enough time to do some really neat things with this franchise. But instead, they sat together said "What we have now is enough", threw something together in a month, sat on it for a few years, and then released it. I see no other way they could have thought this would blow over. Oh yea, there's WiiSpeak, it's really good, nice sound quality, but it's not what I waited 3 years for.

Nintendo, get up off your fat asses and put some more effort into your next Animal Crossing.

With that being said, anyone who HASN'T played the crap out of all of the games, needs to pick this one up. It is truly an incredible experience that should not be missed, and I'm sure if your a diehard you'll be getting this game as well. But seriously, if you are new to the series, forget the lack of effort put into this, and get it because it is very good and you wont be disappointed.
