ight Guys, my Second Review! Disgaea 1 Known as: Disgaea: Hour Of Darkness (PS2) DIsgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (PSP) Disgaea DS: Guess.... The three are the exact same games, with a few differences, which i'll summarize LATEH! Disgaea is a game like no other. It's a Strategy RPG somewhat like Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem. I'm gonna go ahead and say: Buy This on DS, it's an insane time-consumer. Anyway, time to review it! Story: 8/10 Alright, i've not been able to resist, so i know what happens and stuff. it's an above-average story, it's funny and good. without giving too much away, it involves slave penguins, a french guy who trains with heavy underwear, An angel obsessed with love, And lots of other awesome stuff (like Gay "Prism Rangers". Yeah, like the power tangers...) It's funny, has good characters, but is otherwise nondescript. While there's not a ton to write about, i liked it more than say... Oblivion, with Characters like walls and a retarded end sequence.. Graphics: 7/10 Yeah, pretty much what you expect from Strategy games.. No Gears of War, but it's prettier than most other Strategies.. Posted Image That's a Bonus fight against one of Disgaea 2's characters. Only on PSP and DS, she joins you on the Ds.. Sound: 8/10 Sound. it's not bad (unless you have Ps2/PSP. Everyone but the penguin's voices make me want to tear my ears off) but it's not great either. and having christmas music for the Evil Castle of Evil that you spend most of the game in was kinda stupid Gameplay: 9/10 Fun. Strategic. Hard to Fail for an SRPG.. Major gripe is that after a bit, the game throws hordes (and i don't throw something like horde around) of enemies at you. And they ALL use 15-second attacks. so, four attacks per char, times six chars (if you use a small party) means you get to watch purple (it is ALWAYS purple if it gets spammed) stuff puked or thrown all over you for... Literally, 5 minutes. unless, by the grace of something, they don't all use the 0-damage puke or whatever. Replayablity: 10/10 *note, first time i've ever given anything 10/10* This game can last forever. The level cap is 9999 (yes, it's OVER 9000!!!) and it takes a while to level up. later on, you can get stages to level three or so times a go until 2500, but after that... If you're a stat whore, the game's max stats are like 2 million or something.. Yeah... And stats aren't a dime per 10,000 either, after like, 24 hours my main character had maybe 500 attack... You Can enter and level up items (most fun with the item called "Horse Wiener", which is, what else, a horse penis. used as a BELT. That makes you HIT HARDER... Having a LEVEL 100 LEGENDARY HORSE PENIS BELT is priceless.. Anyway, This is a Definite Buy. if you like strategy, that is. Anyway, Differences between Consoles Ps2: Less Shitty Voice Acting(some folks quit), tethered to the wall.. Some random song that isn't that game changing is in this one that was removed. PSP: Shit Voice acting, Portable, Three or So bonus fights. Random Song is removed. There's a store to buy less retarded music for when you're inside an item. DS: Almost no voice acting (THANK GOD), Portable, Three fights present in PSP are here too, but two of them get you bonus characters, There's the Bunny Fetish Girl Posted Image She has Guns, and dodges almost anything. And she floats. It also has random song gone, and touch controls that annoy the shit out of me. But the touching is NOT REQUIRED! YAY! Buy This, people. For the CHILDREN! |

Well, if you're asking about the three names they call the first game, i'd recommend DS. If you're talking about the series overall, go with teh first one. I've not played three, as i don't have a Ps3... and 2 was kinda wierd.. |

This is a fun coincidence. Disgaea was one of the first games I got for my PSP, and about a week or two ago I came across a sealed copy of the PS2 version for $10, and I ain't no fool so I grabbed it. I'd never seen the PS2 version in stores before, so I finally have it. It's a game well-suited to handhelds, sure, but I wanted to play it on the big screen. Etna's voice (English) is better in the PS2 version than the PSP, in my opinion. Speaking of voices, I personally love the English voices for the game, but for some reason a lot of people (read: Japanophiles), can't stand it and immediately switch to the Japanese voices. It's nice that they let you do that. Also, the analog stick is nicer than the nub for going around on the screen with, which is nice since the d-pad only makes diagonal movements. Not that controlling Laharl in the castle is that important, but it's nicer with the analog stick there too. Obviously, the PS2 version lacks the extras of the PSP and DS versions. From what I've read, the DS one has quite a number of great extras (most notably the Prinny Commentary), but the presentation just has to suffer on that thing, and even a little voice acting missing is too much if you ask me. I suppose if you have no other options, or you're a hardcore fan who wants Plenair, then get the DS version. Just so long as you play, since Disgaea is amazing. Just so you know, when people talk about Disgaea, they're almost always referring to the first one. The second one was a bit... different... and the third one is on a system nobody owns. Speaking of systems nobody owns, I actually came here today to post about the PSP spinoff, Prinny. Like I said, it's a fun coincidence that this was posted today. |

I previously skimmed through your review, because I was more intent on writing up mine since that was my sole purpose in visiting this site today. I have to say, I disagree with a number of things you have to say. Obviously, those things don't include the fact that Disgaea is a must have, and that level 100 removed horse anatomy is indeed priceless. I have disagreed for years about English voice acting. I'm usually pleased. The English voice acting in Ranma was terrible, and the Japanese was perfect. The same pretty much goes for Death Note, where it seems only voices in the first few episodes are good, with Light's voice being great and Lind L. Tailor's probably being the best voice of them all, which is just bizarre. Ryuk isn't too awful. L and everybody introduced after is just sad. (especially Misa, who's English voice is as unfitting as the Japanese one is fitting) I love the English voices in Disgaea, they fit the personalities and looks of the characters to a tee. The Japanese ones are probably "technically" better, since they take voice acting very seriously and the game was actually made there. Just know that once you listen in one language first, it'll be what you always associate with a character, so if you do pick Japanese there's probably no going back. Then again, I like the voices in SotN. Yes, that is "technically" bad, and Konami definitely didn't spend a big budget on the English voice acting, but I'll take it over the Japanese and PSP redub versions any day. It's classic, and it really grows on you. Whatever you do, just give the English voices a chance. There are far more cringeworthy voiceovers in gaming (namely, a lot of the women NPC's near the beginning of Baten Kaitos), but remember that the PS2 and PSP games have the most voice acting and you can choose Japanese. However, Disgaea is silly, and the voices aren't really campy or cheesy, so much as they fit the game. I hope you understand what I'm saying. Of course, like I said there are some people who adamantly refuse English dubbing in any and all of their anime, and they'll bash this too. The music in the castle is very Disgaea. It just fits like a glove. Yes, it does have that 'Christmas' feel to it, but it's a humorous Japanese SRPG game with cute characters in the netherworld. This isn't Devil May Cry or Castlevania (well, Castlevania has gotten a little less gothic lately, and I'm talking about the first DMC, but...), there aren't people on pikes and burning in fires, it's more like Tim Burton or Jhonen Vasquez. The music in the castle is exactly what you'd expect from the games' atmosphere, did you expect some kind of organ or guitar theme? I bet you don't like the shop music either. Damn, it's so catchy. You're a bit harsh on the aspects you don't like, but I suppose every "good" reviewer has to bash everything they don't like. Just remember that, except for the Gummi Ship, Hydlide, and Super Pitfall, for everything that you hate, somebody else probably loves. It's funny that when a game is more focused on gameplay than story, people tend to dismiss the stories. The story was a very fun and humorous little adventure, and memorable as well. You'll be playing long afterwards to the point where the story will have been 10% or less of your total time, but for what it's worth you'll probably like it more than a lot of other games' stories. I personally love the graphics, and while it's a 2003 PS2 game and the sprites aren't exactly up there with Third Strike, it certainly beats the hell out of how ugly it probably would've happened if they used 3D characters *cough*fireemblem*cough*. Sorry if I seemed a bit disagreeable. There's just two sides to the matter, and I wanted to make sure anybody who reads this that the cons aren't necessarily cons and may actually be pros. I'm not sure if that works the other way around. Either way you put it though, Disgaea is an awesome game and you can decide what you think when you play it, and you should definitely play it. My favorite part of the whole game is probably the Item World. You can go into every single last item you get your hands on, and they all have randomly generated battlefields where you can either kill all the enemies for bonuses, or escape to the exit and go to the next floor, with every 10 floors offering an escape (there's also a special item for escaping as well), as well as increasing the stats of the item you're inside. You'll also find special enemies, such as specialists that increase the stats of the item as well, and these specialists you defeat can be freely moved into other items. Depending on the item you're in and the floor you're on, enemies get harder and harder, so even higher level characters will be getting their fight on. It's basically the goodness of a dungeon crawler combined with the goodness of Disgaea's own unique SRPG gameplay. Somebody mixed a little Azure Dreams into this already awesome game, and it's deliciously addicting. There are so many items, so many classes, different item rarities, an absurdly high level cap, and just so much to see and to do, and every step of the way is fun. Even if you're not a big SRPG fan, or you're pretty sure you won't like it because you didn't like Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem, give it a try anyway. The hardest part of the whole game is probably disliking it, just try. ;) |

my reviews tend to go liek this: (part) sucks ass (part 2) is good (part 3) sucks BUY IT. anyway, on the voices- i was biased, i played the DS version first, and only got to hear Etna's whiney-ass voice in the between-chapter cutscenes. take it with a grain of salt. |
