Alright, so I recently beat Chrono Trigger for the first time ever. I've owned the game as part of Final Fantasy Chronicles for the PSX (which also includes Final Fantasy IV) for many years. I never truly beat the game though, I remember I'de always stop for some reason near the end. But now I've finally finished it, and thus I write this review.

GRAPHICS (7/10)

Chrono Trigger pushed the SNES to its limits when it was first released in 1995. Now, on the DS, it still holds up fine even today. I would have liked to have seen Chrono Trigger re created in 3 dimensions, much like FFIII and FFIV, but it's no big deal if it's not. The special effects are dazzling and enemies and bosses are well detailed and animated. Of course, you can find way better nowadays, hence why I give it a 7.

GAMEPLAY (8/10)

The Combat system still remains fresh, even after all these years. In Chrono Trigger, you use the ATB battle system, much like many Final Fantasies used around the same time (and still do, of course with big variations). You have your normal Attack option (and mind you, you have loads of weapons to pick up throughout the game, as well as armor and accessories to customize your character and add bonuses such as status ailment protection, magical effects such as haste and some even allowing you to cast infinite spells without loss of MP). You also have a Tech option, where you can cast Magic, or perform "combo's" with other characters in your party (for example, one character casts fire on to another characters sword, and this characters slashes the enemy with a fire sword). Everything else from the SNES version (environments, cutscenes, etc) has been retained and remastered in the DS version. The plot is still as wonderful and great, even better (actually) with a new translation. Two new dungeons have been added, the Lost Sanctum and the Dimensional Vortex. The Lost Sanctum is unlocked at a certain point in the game, and the Dimensional Vortex is unlocked once you achieve New Game+. However, both these new dungeons prove to be quite tedious, especially the Lost Sanctum, which is just fetch quests. The Dimensional Vortex is actually somewhat interesting as it gives more plot info between CT and Chrono Cross, as well as providing a new boss and a 13th special ending.

SOUND (10/10)

The SNES soundtrack has been remastered and placed on to the DS version. Chrono Trigger's soundtrack is memorable, catchy and emotional. A jukebox has been added in the DS version to listen to songs you unlock by playing the main game. Two new songs have also been added that were cut out in the SNES version as well. Not much to say about the music, except that it's absolutely engrossing. I highly recommend picking up the OST.

REPLAYABILITY (9/10)

13 endings, 13 playthroughs, 2 extra dungeons, several side quests...and a new boss. Beating the game once isn't enough, beating the game 13 times is required to fully complete Chrono Trigger.

Overall (9/10)

For any RPG Fan out there, Chrono Trigger is a must buy. The story is excellent, the soundtrack is engrossing, the gameplay is long and replayable, and the graphics are traditional. This concludes my short review.

great review man!

did you like that like in the original one i assume, they leave you to fend for your self in this huge world map. so if you leave the game for a while returning, hell even during a playing session not knowing what to do to advance plotwise on some parts is an issue for many.

Hmm, well I played the original and I found I always knew where to go and what to do. It wasn't difficult at all to find where to go, all you had to do was a bit of exploring ^_^.
