Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo today has announced the Nintendo 3DS, not another redesign but a brand new successor to the Nintendo DS. Some features include 3D technology without the use of 3D glasses.

Following sources has these extra tidbits:

Nikkei

- control stick instead of dpad
- rumble/force-feedback
- improved wireless speed and battery life
- accelerometer
- screen that is smaller than 4 inches
- timing on the announcement could be related to decreased software releases
- Nikkei expects release in second half of 2010

Yomiuri Shimbun

- "it is believed that the system will use a Sharp 3D LCD panel."
- this 3d tech is acheived by placing a small film on the screen, which is separated by a small space. The slight differences in the image creates the 3d effect

Mainichi Shimbun

- software developers have been briefed on the system
- third party software at launch

It is being speculated that the new gen of Pokemon games will be for 3DS as well, a few months back Gamefreak was hiring 3D modelers so I wouldn't be surprised. Gamefreak, to my knowledge, has never made a 3D pokemon game, it's always been by another company.

Its also being speculated that it will be as powerful as a gamecube and made to be designed like gamecube games, so basically a portable gamecube. Also rumored is that the dual screens will be so close together that they're practically just one giant screen.

Should be released by the end of fiscal year of march 2011.

Your thoughts?

<.< It sounds interesting but I don't feel like investing on a new DS anytime soon and esoecially not until I hear about backwards compatability.

Its confirmed to play both DS and DSi titles. Since it'll be compatible with DSi its also to be assumed there will be two(better?) cameras.

Holy crap it sounds awesome! Gamespot says March 2011 at the latest. Also just curious, how big is the original DS's screens? Just wondering because they said the screen is going to be smaller

Honestly, I'm just curious to see the tech in this machine. It sounds really promising and really cool, but it also sounds like a bit of a gimmick.

Like most video game systems it's pretty simple, show me the games and then I'll make my decision.

Everything Nintendo does sounds like a gimmick. :ese:

If used correctly it could work out really well, add a new depth to games. Tetris, Zelda, and Star Fox are some prime examples that come to mind that could really benefit from added depth. I just hope it doesn't end up like movies and they start tacking on 3D to any game just for the sake of 3D. With the Wii and DS most devs know when to use touch screen and motion control and when not to.

The PSP does have some quality titles, though no where near the amount the DS has.

Yeah the PSP is ok but I'm tired of Sony's crap, releasing a crappy revision every year

3D huh? well i hope it doesnt **** up my eyesight more than handhelds already do. when i play handhelds my eyes start to get watery and ill start dripping tears. if thats on normal handhelds imagine with the 3DS which will have 3D. i dont want it to look like 3D movies without glasses (picture all double-y red and blue) that will **** it up even more! D8

oh hey! kinda like my avatar it makes my eyes watery to see my avatar, i cant look at Chiwiwich!!! now xD

xD I ruined chiwiwich for you nudi I'm sorry. The 3D technology they speak of probably isn't red and blue kind, but more like ZOMG AVATAR IN 3D kind, or so I assume.

I'm planning on buying a DS lite soon, so this announcement put me in a slight predicamente, but as others said I think in the end I will wait to see what the games are like and if it's worth it or not

Guess its time to reinstate Chowowoch?

And it won't be neither like red and blue or Digital 3D because both of those require glasses, the 3DS won't use glasses.
