Ok so I recently started playing metro 2033 and I gotta say I am loving this game

Graphics

The game is absolutely gorgeous amazing textures and particle effects up the wazoo along with a great attention to details and one of my biggest peeve, shadows, this game actually has soft smooth shadows instead of the pixelated mess some games offer (Looking at you Assassins Creed 2)

Gameplay

Of course this is still the main selling point of any game, it IS a video game, not a movie, so let's get on with it

The gameplay is still very much a first person shooter if you wanna get down to the basics, however it has a lot of things that I particularly enjoy and I feel it does just right, for example at the beginning you get a ton of weapons and while at first it might seem like that is going to make you overpowered and that you are overgeared, nothing is more deceiving and wrong, the ammo for every single weapon is scarce, I am a type of person who aims before shooting and carefully rations his ammo which is why a lot of games become incredibly easy, this is once again not the case. About an hour in and having bought about 50 extra rounds for my automatic weapon aside from the ones provided by the game I still ran out of that specific type of ammo and I was forced to change to my other weapons which feel drastically different. The shotgun is a double barreled shotgun and it lets you shoot the left barrel with the left mouse button and the right barrel with the right mouse button, it does not let you shoot left twice just because you still have a shot and you can reload a single barrel if you so desire as well as shooting both barrels at once if you think you can shoot your enemy despite the recoil.

Speaking of ammo, one of the big things about metro 2033 is that you live in the subway in a post apocalyptic future and can't get to the surface which is irradiated, as such there are remainders of the old civilization, this includes ammo which was professionally made and is so good at killing things that it's your currency, that being said yes, you can use that ammo if you are out or if you wanna deal that extra bit of damage but you should be extremely wary of when you are doing so for that ammo will allow you to buy anything you need including exchanging good ammo for the common type of homemade ammo used in the game. However you must definitely be careful about how you manage your good bullets, this is not a game you can play without having to buy things (or at least it would prove extremely difficult) you need to buy gas filters, med kits, ammo and you can also get weapons, I should say weapon upgrades but in this game every single gun and "upgrade" has an up and down, for example the silenced weapon will do less damage but will let you kill silently.

So on about the little mechanics, you sometimes need to go through poisonous areas, often actually and how do you do this? Well you put on your gas mask of course, but like a real gas mask you need a filter, but not just one, you need multiple ones because you really don't want to run out of air and die, so there's that, you also want to have your flashlight, but again unlike many games where you take things like a flashlight for granted, here when your battery runs out all you need to do is pull out your manual charger and start pumping that son of a gun, it's not one of those things you need to do constantly, but it IS a necessity which makes it a cool mechanic instead of just a drag, you also can acquire pneumatic weapons and you also need to pump those to make them more effective.

Another cool thing is that you don't only fight monsters and anomalies, you also have to deal with bandits who often barricade themselves in certain places making you having to be stealthy if you don't want too much trouble although of course you can always just take them head on, however this won't be easy, while there is regenerating hp, it is not fast by any means, taking cover for a few seconds won't make you win that fight, you will have to use med kits which are not easy to come by nor are they cheap.

Also if you are wearing a gas mask while fighting, you need to be extra careful because a bad encounter and that mask could break, thankfully if it does you still have some time to find a corpse and see if they have a gas mask for you

Last but not least I do wanna mention that people who barricade themselves be it bandits or just scouts who were trying to hunker down in a place tend to set trip wires with shotgun shells where you can retrieve the ammo used for it (Which if you zoom in on the mechanism is actually very accurate to what one of those traps would be like) pieces of wood with nails that serve to trample you and cans that are hanging from wires to alert them

Story

Story so far is pretty decent, the game overall is very atmospheric and does a great job at selling you where you are, why you should be scared and why you should be careful, everything is very deliberate

Sound design

What a magnificent sound design this game has, you go to a bar or market and people are talking and going on with their daily lives, every little detail has sound, you step on broken glass you will hear it, you put on your gas mask or talk to someone who is wearing a mask and the voices will be garbled, you hear your own breathing while using the gas mask and as the filters get close to being unusable right before you need to change, your character has difficulty breathing, the game absolutely engrosses you with the sound and in a couple of situations I actually took my headset off thinking that what I heard in game was happening a floor below me.

Another thing I wanted to mention is that the game is almost HUD less, your way point is a compass on your leather journal, the type of ammo you are using is visible because it's shiny and very different looking from the regular ammo, aside from the fact that your character will actually change the clip manually for a more visible effect, your objectives and what not are on a notepad written down in your journal and your filters are shown on a device attached to your wrist that show how much life the filter still has, the only elements that are consistently shown on your screen is the ammo, which is understandable for it's one of the most important elements of the game

To sum it up the game has a lot of neat little details, very creative game mechanics, it's very atmospheric with a compelling story, beautiful graphics and amazing sound design it has to be one of my favorite fps of all time.

Stopped reading once I found out this wasn't a movie :|.

I jest, glad you are enjoying it sir. I like the sounds of the survival aspects, such as gas masks and the flash lights. Quite a few games have flash light batteries but they're pussies about it and it just auto-refils.

But I digress, I'm glad you enjoyed the atmosphere in this game JonTron. I have a soft spot for post apocalyptic futures, eve if they are getting a bit tired now a days, though I'd give this game a pass since it's based on a novel, and novels are cool.

Man fuck you you chode!

But yeah I am greatly enjoying everything in it, it basically does what a lot of games claim they do or attempt to do but it actually punishes you, it's not unforgiving to the point that you have to restart the entire game (at least I don't think so) but enough to actually make you strugggle

You're telling me this isn't a sequel to the 1997 hit buddy cop movie?
Man who even gives a shit then.

Maddok just found our next movie night film :3.

And that's good sir. I rarely found frustrating games fun, but I do enjoy a challenge when it's fair. And a game that takes place in that kind of setting definitely deserves a challenging survival aspect.
