[ History ]: Read Me. An extremely long-winded biography of major events in Natalia's life. I. Originally born into a wealthy family in South Korea, Natalia lived a lot of her life without having to lift a finger. She had a mother- Seo Ji, a father- Viktor, a younger sister by the name of Lilliana, and an older brother named Jai. Her father was away, often on business, and her mother was a workaholic "supermom", as Natalia called her. Her mother worked all day, almost every day, but still came home and took care of her children like she had just woken up for the day. Because of her parents' constant absence, though, things went on in the household hat Natalia even today hasn't spoken of- Her brother (Jai), being a few years older than her and much stronger, hit her around daily, treated her like nothing, like she was just trash for others to step on. Jai harrassed Natalia for nearly half of her life, but that was only half of the story. He regularly molested her and taught her that it was normal- all brothers did this to their sisters, but she had to keep it a secret from her sister and her parents or she would pay for it. II. She let this go on because she didn't know what to do, until she turned twelve. Natalia was not stupid- by the time she was in secondary school, she realized what was happening was wrong. She was still terrified and had no idea what to do. When Natalia was twelve, she murdered her own brother. It was a day when they were alone- Nobody was around, not even her sister. She cleaned up the blood and took care of the body. How devestated her family was when they found out that Jai disappeared without a trace- The only son of Viktor Alkaev, the man that would take over the family company when his father could not lead it anymore. He had a path set out for success, and he was gone. Her father spiraled into depression. His company shrivelled and died and he began to drink. The one thing that Natalia had escaped, the abuse of her brother, had come back in the form of her father. It was much worse- She was left bruised and bloody and her mother couldn't do anything about it. Natalia stopped attending school because she could barely sit up in the morning, much less walk to school every day. She spent time at home, quiet during the day and beaten when her father would come home from the bar every night. III. One night, it all...ended. Her family- even her younger sister, dead. It was a night that Natalia still has nightmares about to this day. Her mother, her sister, and herself were at home, watching a movie together- Something they did every week. Natalia had gotten up to go to the bathroom and while she was gone, she heard the front door of the home open with a bang. She heard more sets of feet than just her father's (which she recognized so well). She heard the rough voice of a man telling her father to get down- and she heard the thud of two knees hitting carpeted flooring. Needless to say, Natalia was terrified. She didn't move a muscle and instead, she stayed inside of the bathroom, peering out of the crack in the door. It was a sight to see, her large father on his knees with a knife to his throat, but what came next was not something that Natalia expected. Another one of the strangers grabbed Lilliana, her younger sister, and another her mother. Their voices were loud and they spoke in broken Russian, though Natalia knew exactly what they said, "Viktor .. Vy znali, chto etot den' pridet . Seychas , vy platite tsenu." With that, two gunshots sounded through the house and Natalia watched her mother and sister fall to the floor through that same crack in the bathroom door. The house was silent for only a few seconds before the sound of a knife cutting through flesh could be heard. You would expect Natalia to cry, to say something, to walk out of the bathroom, but all she sit was sit on the tile of the bathroom and continue to watch the strangers in her home. She waited, and waited, and waited for these men to leave, and it seemed like hours before the sound of the front door slamming could be heard. Natalia, shakily, made her way out of the bathroom and into the living room again. She took her mother's phone from her pocket and called the police, only muttering a single phrase, "Nakonets, on mertv." before hanging up the phone. She sat at the couch and finished the movie playing before the front door finally burst open for the second time that day. Police flooded the house and she was taken into custody. She withstood a year before she was cleared of the crimes they suspected her of committing, though she never received the help that she truly needed after watching the death of her entire family. IV. At the same time of Natalia's enrollment in the adoption system, Devin and Darline Edmon decided that they needed to fill a void in their own hearts. Ever since their daughter, Kat, was murdered, neither of them could truly sleep well at night. They spent so many years unsure of what to do, before they finally realized that they could adopt. Although both were aging, they were wealthy and their home was relatively safe- At least, to an outsider it was. They did not want an american baby- They wanted one from Devin's roots in Russia, and that's what they found. It took them two years to find somebody they truly wanted to take home- A fifteen year old by the name of Natalia Alkaev, orphaned and in the system for a year without any luck. They knew of her background and what had happened, as well as the notes from her therapist about her angry tendencies and a slight hint of PTSD psychosis. They chose her because they knew that they could handle her, even though they remembered what had happened to Kat. They wanted a second shot, and now they had it. Devin flew out to meet the girl and to talk to her, to see if they could really handle her in person. He saw the girl and instantly felt a soft spot in his heart- She was definitely quiet, but if one were to look closely at Natalia, they could tell that she had seen things in her life and she had done things that nobody knew of. He saw something in her that took years for him to see in any other child. Devin knew in his heart that his wife, Darline, would love the girl and he met with the man in charge immediately. The papers went through over the course of a year and after months of letter writing and phone calls, it was time to bring Natalia to America. And it happened, and she was loved just like she was born into the Edmon family. She lived in a large home filled with people and for a while, she did not attend school. V After months of getting used to such a new culture and some pretty deep cultural shock, it was decided that it was time for Natalia to attend school again. Without a thought, Devin and Darline enrolled her into Lennox. It was evident she would never function in normal school- Not after what had happened to her. With her violent tendencies and her lack of emotional connection to those around her, Natalia would fit right in at Lennox. She began school the fall of the year she turned sixteen, and now a year later, she has grown accustomed to those around her and her own family. Although they have not gained her trust, she does love her family and she would die for any of them. In the beginning of the school year, she joined the "Photography Club", though it is obviously not that. She fights almost every day- It is one of the things that keeps her relatively sane and it is what she loves to do, considering how she wants to become a boxer and such. Most of the time, she is fine when she fights but there are times where she has an overly violent outbreak due to her PTSD from both her brother and father's abuse and the death of her family. These outbreaks are near fatal and those that get in the way of it are usually in the hospital on life support. VI. Because of Natalia's PTSD, she does not speak of her past and the only people that truly know what happened to her are Devin and Darline, and maybe certain people in the school that have access to those materials. She has not told the rest of her family about what happened or how she came to be in the adoption system as much as they beg for her to tell them. It hurts her too much to think about it, and it especially hurts for her to look in the mirror every morning. Everybody used to say she was a spitting image of her mother, after all. |
Illnesses I. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder --Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.--Symptoms of PTSD are grouped into four main categories; intrusive memories, avoidance, negativity in thinking and mood, and emotional reactions.Intrusive Memories Symptoms of intrusive memories may include:
Recurrent, unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event Reliving the traumatic event as if it were happening again (flashbacks) Upsetting dreams about the traumatic event Severe emotional distress or physical reactions to something that reminds you of the event
Natalia's past experiences are always in the back of her head, fighting to come forward and make her relive the death of her family. Months after the experience, she was rarely able to control the thoughts from taking over her entire mind and forcing her into a state of violence and anger, though a few years later she is now able to block out the thoughts through the use of her medication.
Avoidance Symptoms of avoidance may include:
Trying to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event Avoiding places, activities or people that remind you of the traumatic event
Although her family's murder is the major cause of her PTSD, the constant sexual and physical abuse from her brother and then her father contribute to this and that is why she strays from intimate relationships. She fears if she were to get intimate with somebody, she would have flashbacks and that she would "black out" as she calls it. Natalia was the spitting image of her mother, which is why she avoids looking in the mirror at all costs to stray from the thought of her. She also avoids being in intimate relationships with men of Asian or Russian descent if she can help it as it reminds her of her brother and father.
Negativity in Thinking and Mood Symptoms of negative changes in thinking and mood may include:
Negative feelings about yourself or other people Inability to experience positive emotions Feeling emotionally numb Lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed Hopelessness about the future Memory problems, including not remembering important aspects of the traumatic event Difficulty maintaining close relationships
Although she may not let it be known among others, Natalia is extremely self-critical and she regularly thinks of herself as stupid or worthless. She was trained to think this way, of course, from her brother and she was trained to feel like it from her father. To avoid her thoughts, she attempts to act positively, cracking jokes and smiling often to attempt to lift her own mood. Needless to say, this rarely actually works for her. Natalia used to be a pianist, which her mother used to tell her would clear paths to anywhere for her. It used to be what Natalia prided herself in and did in her free time. Now, when she tries to sit down at home, she can't bring herself to play even a short, simple song. Although it does not trigger memories, she has suppressed the thought of playing piano as being anything fun and has dismissed it from her mind. There are aspects of her family's murder that Natalia is unable to remember, and her therapist says that she is unsure if it is because she has suppressed the memories or if it is due to something else. Because of her brother and father, Natalia has pushed herself away from most people and tries not to get too close to anybody. She is still weary of those living in her own household because she says that she has only known them for a year in person- She knew her brother for seven years before he did anything to her. She knew her father for thirteen years before he did anything to her, and she trusted them both until then with all of her heart. Emotional Reactions Symptoms of changes in emotional reactions may include:
Irritability, angry outbursts or aggressive behavior Always being on guard for danger Overwhelming guilt or shame Self-destructive behavior, such as drinking too much or driving too fast Trouble concentrating Trouble sleeping Being easily startled or frightened
Natalia is known for her angry outbursts, as most are due to suppressed memories making their way into the front of her mind and taking over her thoughts. Besides that, she is also known to be angered easily in general- these cause her to be violent at times and that is why she likes to fight at school. It calms her down oftentimes and she acts out less outside of school because of it. Natalia has rather hyperactive hearing- the sound of boots against a hard floor send her on edge and frightens her because it reminds her of her father on nights when he would come back from drinking just to come up the stairs and hit her. Sometimes, Natalia's thoughts change to blame herself for her mother and sister's death as she knew she just sat in the bathroom and watched. She believes she could have changed what happened, though it is obvious that is not true. She hates herself for it day in and day out. Although she used to tell herself that she would never pick up her father's habits, Natalia is a heavy drinker and she does so often. She also picked up a habit of smoking- cigarettes as well as marijuana. There are times where Natalia is unable to complete her school work because other things cloud her mind, like things that happened during the day or small things that reminded her of her childhood. Natalia is known to be easily scared, whether it be a ghost story or somebody sneaking up behind her and shouting in her ear. She hates it and people often joke around about it and scare her. Some day it's crazy how she scares so easy, but Natalia simply gets angry or simply upset. Medication [○] Zoloft --Zoloft was the first drug approved for treatment of PTSD anywhere in the world. It is an antidepressant that aids in Natalia's anxiety and depressing thoughts. She takes these pills twice a day- Once in the morning and once after school.
[○] Prazosin --Prazosin is not a drug approved for treatment of PTSD, though it does aid in reducing and/or suppressing nightmares in PTSD victims. She takes this once a day, about an hour before she goes to sleep.
II. Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) --Intermittent explosive disorder involves repeated, sudden episodes of impulsive, aggressive, violent behavior or angry verbal outbursts in which you react grossly out of proportion to the situation.--Explosive eruptions occur suddenly, with little or no warning, and usually last less than 30 minutes. These episodes may occur frequently or be separated by weeks or months of nonaggression. Less severe verbal outbursts may occur in between episodes of physical aggression.
One may feel a sense of relief and tiredness after the episode. Later, they may feel remorse, regret or embarrassment.Outbursts The explosive verbal and behavioral outbursts are out of proportion to the situation, with no thought to consequences, and can include:
Temper tantrums Tirades Heated arguments Shouting Slapping, shoving or pushing Physical fights Property damage Threatening or assaulting people or animals
Natalia has had this illness for all of her life and her parents had to deal with it for most of her childhood. She used to be known to throw terrible, terrible temper tantrums and she used to threaten to kill her younger sister when she pissed her off. She used to shout often and get into fights with her older brother, whether they were physical or emotional. The murder of Natalia's brother was through an outburst of her IED, where she got angry while he was assaulting her and she strangled him. She stabbed him fifty-six times all over his body and stopped when the blood stopped spurting from him each time she stabbed him. She felt relieved after she had killed him, though it finally set in that she had actually murdered her brother and she immediately regretted it. She knew that she could not go back on what she had done, though, and kept the murder a secret through all of these years. Treatment [○] Natalia's psychiatrist has told Natalia that she is unable to prescribe medication for her illness, though Natalia regularly meets with her to work on suppressing her anger and redirecting it to other things, like the classic pillow or through writing.
