Music of Middle-earth: Saturday, January 3rd [ ![]() Music of Middle-earth Celebrating music inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien Greetings, fellow players and music lovers! I am very happy to announce, with my wonderful co-sponsors Les Beaus Chaupeaux, Music of Middle-earth, an event of many bands and musicians from all over LOTRO celebrating the magic of Tolkien's world with music inspired by his works. When and where is this? This concert will be taking place on Saturday, January 3rd, 2015-- the Professor's 123rd birthday-- at 4PM server-time (Eastern US). It will take place under the Party Tree just below Bag-End in Hobbiton. If we end up getting a ton of participants we'll extend it a day to begin on the 2nd, but for now, it is a one-day, 3-4 hour event. Who can participate? Anyone who can play on Landroval and play another song with at least one other person! Anything from duos to large bands from any server are most welcome to sign up. How do I sign up? Sign ups start on Monday, November 3rd. This will hopefully give people enough time to see how many songs they can find or make into ABCs over the next two and a half months and how long of a set they can make. Either post here on this thread, send me a forum PM, or an in-game mail to Laerlin with your interest. At a later point of time (basically, before Jan 3rd) I would like to have your band name (or, for small groups without a name, a list of participating individuals), your original server if you're not from Landroval, if you want a 30 minute, 45 minute, or one hour set, and the list of songs/artists that you want to play. As mentioned above, if there proves to be a lot of interest in this event, we'll make it another day longer. For groups of 2-3 people, exceptions can be made for 15 minute sets, especially if the music is unique. What songs qualify for 'Middle-earth inspired' music? This is admittedly the hardest part of this whole event, for while there is a *lot* of Tolkien-inspired music out there, there are not that many that have abcs, midis, or even free sheet-music for said music. Part of this might be a hunt. For the musically gifted that can write by ear, it may be a fun challenge. But let us get to the qualifications. When it comes to Middle-earth music, the most influential artists to pick songs from are: --Howard Shore: composer for the live action LOTR and Hobbit films and by far the leader in midis and sheet music of his works. --Chance Thomas: composer for much of the music for LOTRO, as well as the video game 'The War of the Ring'. Much of his music is on YouTube under the games he composed for, like LOTRO (https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...tro +soundtrack). --The Tolkien Ensemble: they put Tolkien's poems to music, and much more (http://www.tolkien-ensemble.net/musik/musik_en.html). Their music can also be heard on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/results? sear...lkien+ensemble). --Donald Swann: he worked with Tolkien himself to put his work to music (to see his work, scroll down to 'The Road Goes Ever On' http://www.donaldswann.co.uk/pubcycles.html#cycles). It would be a disservice not to acknowledge how much Tolkien has influenced rock and metal bands. Blind Guardian is one of the most famous of these, especially with their 'Nightfall in Middle-earth' album. Battlelore is less famous than Blind Guardian but most of their lyrics are based on Tolkien's works. Two very famous bands that have some (not all songs) with Tolkien-based lyrics are Led Zeppelin and Rush. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. To get a good look at just how many thousands (yes, thousands) of songs there are out there influenced by Tolkien's works, check out www.tolkien-music.com to find bands and artists that incorporate Tolkien's world to song. Original compositions inspired by Middle-earth are most welcome! I should be able to be there, starting early. Can't think of any reason why I couldn't, barring anything out of my control. |

I should be there for pretty much the whole event. Food and drink breaks! Hobbits need food for stamina. |
