I've been playing SoTA and love what I'm seeing. :-) I have been studying and investigating what all is involved with a PoT. So I am reaching out to all of you to ask how you'd feel about that? The clock is ticking for me to make a firm decision since the prices are going up 20% in 8 days...lol. I don't want to pay 20% more. There would be NO cost to you. I am offering to pony up the dough because I'd like to have one! ![]() Is this something that would interest any of you? Not just so you have a guaranteed place to live or that we could all live in proximity to each other, but interested in creating lore for it, managing it, naming it, building it. At Baron 3 level I would get to customize it using templates. This would include the biome (grasslands, forest, coastal, desert, etc) as well as certain features such as trees, statues, rock formations, etc. Additionally, would you want it specifically for LoTRO refugees, personal friends and family? No need to answer now, but please think about it. Please share this with anyone else from LoTRO or your friends/family who you think might be interested. I managed to snag a Royal Founder pledge, so I am in this for the long haul. |

One thing to consider is that PoTs have lots, but to claim a lot you must have a deed. For many, their pledge is too low to get a tax-free deed. Buying a deed in the add-on store is also expensive. So I am still looking into this. It may be best to decide on which NPC city we'd like to live in or live near. |

Ok, after a long chat and studying up on the forums, owning a PoT isn't the way to go. I am looking for a place to call home and there is another player town that will be in testing in may - Pax Lair. Investigating the possibility of moving there and becoming part of one of the guilds. I will keep you posted!! |

Well, here is my update! I managed to meet one of the guild leaders and PoT owners for the Pax Lair community. This is important for a huge number of reasons: 1. I was invited to be a member of the Pax et Veritas guild and I accepted. Spent several hours in Teamspeak with Themo Lock. This kin is a RPers wet dream! They are VERY artistically inclined, meaning they have poets, writers, actors and future music makers in the guild and in the Pax Lair Community at large. 2. Pax Lair will be the very first customized player owned town to be put in the game. This happens in the next update just a few days way. I am going to live in that community and Themo Lock is giving me a choice waterfront location for my huge Duchess abode. Eventually, I'll able to rent rooms out to others. If you ever wanted to live in a palace and enjoy plush living - you will be able to! And for those of you who may end up with deeds, room will be made for you to live in the Pax Lair community if that's what you want. 3. Winfield is one of the guild leaders and he is also the Governor of Pax Lair. 4. Umm...did I mention that Winfield is RL friends with Richard Garriott? Let that sink in for a moment - one of my guild leaders hangs out with Richard Garriott. So if I tell you that this game is going to be more than you can even imagine, I can say that because I have it almost from the horse's mouth. 5. Themo Lock told me that Richard Garriott loves to meet players, he hangs out and plays the game a LOT. Also that Garriott wants all the things we as players want...lol!! ---> I have so much more to share, all very exciting, but I don't know where to start. Music system - It'll be here. Having bands - The devs want, are working toward it. Listening to the players - Themo Lock was a library of information about the Dev desire to put as much into the game as they possibly can and do it right. ---> I cannot stress enough that when you find out all the things they want to put in this game, you will be blown away. I know I am! You may want to look at this: http://sotawiki.net/sota/PaxLair ---> A sister guild to Pax et Veritas is Pax Lair Citizens. Read this and you will get a hint at what these guys are going to build: http://sotawiki.net/sota/Community:PaxLair_Citizens I am truly excited! I hope this helps you be more excited too!! |

Nice stuff Fionwyn! thanks! I'm just putting my rig back together today. I'll have to fire up sota and go explore. Not sure what I want to do via housing yet, a quiet little town maybe. Not sure what I want to do as a char yet either, tossing around the idea of a criminal org, somewhere down the road. See what feeling I get after some gameplay. Done one other alpha, years ago, and several betas, so I approach with no expectations. lol. That was more for bugs though, rarely did dev's listen to changes in gameplay and structure. Wow Fio... I'm impressed! Seriously, Impressed! Renting out a room in your castle wouldn't be a bad idea... at least until I figure out if I want/am able to get a plot of my own. I'm still trying to figure my character out as well. Chukk in a criminal organization... I feel like that should surprise me more than it actually does... LOL |

About gameplay: 1. It is different. There are no classes, you can pretty much have whatever skills you want. You are not limited to be only a healer or only combat. I have always liked a melee/magic combo that allows me to kill and keep myself healed. 2. Skills use focus. That is not so different, but what is different is that your skills can either be *locked* to the toolbar, unlocked where they popup randomly or a combination of both. **Edit: Locked skills use more focus, unlocked skills use less focus. This becomes important if you must deal with multiple targets because those locked skills will drain your focus faster and you will be left waiting for the focus bar to replenish at inconvenient times...lol. 3. Decks - Imagine all your skills as cards in a deck of cards. You build a deck by choosing which skills you want to put in it. You can have as many decks as you want. 4. Now about those cards. When you build a deck, cards have different values. Those values determine how many times you can duplicate them in your deck. For example: Melee attack - 0/3 Melee double attack - 0/2 Melee multi target - 01 ---> The above is just a very rough example. You will have other things to put in your deck such as healing potions, spells, etc. 5. So what about that locked and unlocked deal? Your character comes with a pre-built combat deck where all the default skills are visible on the toolbar. (My advice - don't touch that one at first. The downside is that the default skills require you use a 1-hand sword and shield.) Skills locked on a toolbar cost more focus. Skills that are unlocked use less focus. Initially, you have a limited number of skills, therefore, a limited number of skills you can put in a customized deck. As you gain levels, you must visit a skill trainer to choose more skills. (This is similar to how LOTRO used to be except there is only one type of skill trainer in SoTA to teach you combat, magic and crafting skills.) Where the locked and unlocked comes in is that if you want to add a new skill to your toolbar, you need to make a new deck, ie, a custom deck. It is on that customized deck that you'll see you can add skills, but you cannot *lock* them in place on the toolbar. In combat, this can be a challenge because you wont't have all your skills showing, you will have random skills popping up (imagine being dealt random cards - you never know what you'll be dealt). Additionally, if your skills are like a deck of cards - as a low level character, you can only carry a low number of cards in your deck. The solution to this is two-fold: a) The skill trainer has skills to allow you to expand your hand - this means in a custom deck, you will have more cards (skills) being dealt at random. b) The skill trainer has skills that allow you to lock skills on the toolbar. ---> What I have learned is to put points in expanding my deck and increasing the number of skills I can *lock* on the toolbar. 6. One other thing to note, is that you can increase, decrease the frequency of skills being dealt or even remaining visible before disappearing when you customize your deck. 7. Combos - these are powerful attacks that require two specific skills to be used one right after the other to create a third very powerful attack. When you customize a deck, you will see exactly what skills produce which combos. In conclusion - this is just a brief overview of how combat differs from what you are used to in LOTRO. The game is both more complex and less hand-holding than I have seen in a long time. The combat system may not be to your liking or you may find it a bit confusing. But to reiterate - skills are like cards in a deck. As you level, you have opportunity with the skill trainer to carry a deck with more skills and lock more skills on your toolbar. The purpose of the custom decks is to allow you to experiment and find a deck that suits your play style. I personally lock my potions, a few bread and butter spells and one multi target attack on the toolbar. The rest I put in the deck as the random popups. To some, you may think you're at the mercy of random chance in combat. But to me, this system has forced me to think about what skills I use and in what combination with other skills to be most effective. I am no longer just a button masher, but forced to think of a strategy when those skills pop up. Edited by Fionwyn, Apr 24 2015, 05:28 PM.

You mean, I'm gonna have to think??? But I like mindlessly button-mashing. I'm GOOD at button mashing! That's why I don't play a warden. Honestly, I can't wait for the character wipe so I can really explore this system.
