I wouldn't call you a elitist but if you support a game that has a attitude towards it's players like this, you are enabling them.

And as far as the cost, unfortunately, I didn't take advantage of your gift until after I had already bought the game so it still cost me $45.
I'm happy to buy your pledge and gift it to someone else who may get more enjoyment from the game! Or you may want to check back when the game is no longer in pre-alpha testing to see if there are changes you find more to your liking.

Additionally, I make no apology for supporting a game or developers that have a great attitude toward players from my limited experience. I was very clear in earlier posts about the combat system. I have not had a chance to cover housing, but I will shortly.

But to state something important, this thread is not about what you and I agree or disagree on Orladan. This thread is my attempt to inform people about SoTA. I will continue to do so and you are free to skip it. I'd like to keep it on topic. If you decide you want to take some time to start a *Why I hate SoTA* thread, please have at it.

And now for housing.

In many games, player housing is not an integral part of the game. It is an afterthought. Some of the longer running games have absolutely no player housing at all: WoW, Star Wars the Old Republic (might have added some kind of *ship* housing in the last year), Star Trek Online.

The long departed Star Wars Galaxies had both player housing and player towns with a greatly cherished ability to decorate inside your home as you saw fit (based on the size of the house and the limit to the number of items it could contain.) The style of the house varied from planet to planet.

Eve Online is a tough game where I've heard your Avatar is your ship, so I suppose your ship is where you live?

Ultima Online, still running after 17 years, implemented a housing system and I've heard it's always been very hard to acquire a house as part of the design of the game.

LoTRO added limited housing with limited options as to how your house looks, how the yard can be decorated and where you can place things both inside and outside. There are no player owned cities.

---> So the point is this: different online games have a history of treating player housing differently.

Then there is SoTA - a game which gets it's DNA from Ultima Online and the man who started MMO gaming in the first place - Richard Garriott, aka, Lord British.

SoTA is a sandbox game that will have player housing as a huge part of its core design. In addition to NPC cities that will have lots available, there are also going to be player owned towns. But the number of lots will be limited because each NPC city and each player owned town will have only so many lots to go around. The larger the NPC city/PoT, the more lots will be zoned. Additionally, lots come in four general sizes: Row House, Village, Town, City. The larger the lot, the more real estate it takes up.

To claim a lot, you must have a deed. Deeds can be gotten from a higher pledge, purchased from the addon store for *real* $$, or at some point buy able in the game using in-game gold and based on the current market value.

Any pledge that comes with a deed is tax-free. Addon store deeds will be taxed.

PoT's are generally going to be hubs for trade and events. Player merchants will have stalls to sell their crafted wares, haggling will ensue, an agreed upon price will be found. Some players will have the ability to place a vendor in their home or on their property.

Additionally, PoTs are being customized so that they look different from the NPC towns. There is a HUGE variety of house looks and there are different biomes (environments) that owners of a PoT can choose from.

Decorating is up to you. Inside and outside, no hooks, you put things where you want them to go.

Players will also have the ability to place a basement.

At some point, players will be able to rent out rooms to others. They'll be able to grant permissions to areas within their house and act as a *landlord*.

All of this is very different from LoTRO which has housing for everyone, but most neighborhoods are empty and they are NOT hubs for commerce, trade or events. All houses and all neighborhoods in a particular area are cookie cutter clones. Players have asked for years for changes to housing and it has fallen on deaf ears. So much for how a game treats its players.

In SoTA, housing is a main focus of the game. Decorating is a main focus of the game. The ability to take different pieces of furniture and build an outdoor theatre complete with a stage and bleachers is a main focus of the game.

However, housing IS going to be limited and as the game progresses from month to month, chapter to chapter, it will likely become harder and harder to acquire both a lot and a deed.
