Good point Jase, when ya put it like that, its hard to disagree.

Next game on my list is Dragon Age: Origins.

What is better though, or what would you recommend, Dragon Age or Demon Souls?

Hard choice. Both are great games, so you really can't go wrong either way.

Oh, and to answer your question Pablo about Yakuza being an RPG...yeah, I'd consider it one. It has a lot of core RPG elements (random battles, sidequesting, levelling up etc.), but if we're going with Jason's definition of a JRPG...it doesn't fit. Mainly because the player character is a badass.

I can't believe how badly you missed my point. Yakuza IS an RPG, because you play a role in a game. By it's very definition, it is an RPG. I was speaking out more against people insisting RPGs must have arbitrary values to qualify as one.

Basically what he's saying is:

All games a Role Playing Games, because you take on the Role of the Character you are playing.

Gears of War is an RPG because you play the Role of Marcus Fenix

NHL 10 is an RPG because you can take on the Role of an NHL Player or General Manager...

Is Yakuza 3 classed as a RPG?
Everything is nowdays isn't it?
I've bitten my tongue until now, but here it comes. Nearly every game is an RPG by the very description of the term: Role Playing Game. So any game in which you take an active role in the character you play is an RPG. I know that for it to be considered one by most it must have stats, inventory, dragons or bishies. However, that's too specific a definition.

That's why I actually agree with dividing the styles themselves. JRPG is an RPG made generally with eunuchs in the main roles, a boring and poorly implemented combat system and many "KAWAAAAAAIIIII^_____^" moments. Segregating them defines the experience more than just saying RPG.
I totally agree with you with the whole "...any game in which you take an active role in the character you play is an RPG."

However, I believe that all the other things are sneaking into all other games. Almost every game nowdays has an XP/Level up system, grinding to get said XP, multiple item/weapon/armour collection, inventories to store such loot, chests to open, side-quests, stats, character classes and more.

I also agree that having a genre such as JRPG is warranted as Bioware/Bethesda games are a totally different beast to Tri-Ace/Square-Enix. But I would take it even further:

Disgaea, Fire Emblem and all games that end in the word "Tactics", are different to
Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Breath of Fire. Even though they are all JRPG's

Diablo, Baldurs Gate (Console), Champions of Norath, are different to
The Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, Fable even Borderlands. Even though they are all WRPG's

And then you've got Zelda and Paper Mario, which are different again...
