Hey Guys,

Well, got up a little early today, and what was on the agenda? Movies of course, and what better movie to get a game and comic fanatic such as myself please? Kick-Ass of course!

It was awesome, and had all the good things a Tarantino movie did, bloody action, a collection of quotable lines and of course swearing (oh and a non-linear presentation). If you love superhero comics and movies (everything back to Batman by Tim Burton) you'll love this (and trying to spot all the references).

Anyway, go see it! Now! Before it's too late! and then when it is too late! SEE IT AGAIN!.

Yeah, it's a great film. Managed to get into a free screening, and is definitely something I would pay for. Especially to see Nick Cage being FUCKING AWESOME.

That being said, what did you make of the character of Hit Girl? Too controversial for you, or didn't you care?

I've heard good things, but Tarantino comparisons make my skin crawl.

Also, Richard Wilkins said he wouldn't let his 14 year old son see it because it's filth. The OFLC agrees, fuckwit.

Herald Sun dude gave it 4.5 out of 5....so he obviously got what the movie was about.

Also, clearly MA15+ movies are aimed at Kids, i mean if they werent....why all the backlash :P

Hit Girl was fucking awesome, let me quote something here "Dude! I think I'm in love with her man!" "She looks like 11 years old..." "I solemnly swear to wait for her." *long pause*

and I love controversy, I mean Witch-Hunter stock full of shit that would make Jack Thompson and Michael Atkinson squeal.

It wasn't "filth" it was fucking awesome!

hang on. YOU made a Tarantino reference to it last episode "And they made Kill Bill Black and White" also, I'd hardly compare them together, I mean Kill Bill had more violence, a lot more dismemberment. Kick Ass had one lost leg, and a finger but that was far out.

Might not exactly be the same kind of comparison but a comparison none the less.

In relation to the level of violence, not the underlying artisitic merit. I was saying that Kill Bill was forced to go black and white in order to see release, yet this had no such hurdles. I would never compare Tarantino to anybody truly artisitic, as while his movies are watchable, they are not his. They are an amalgam of those who proceeded him. And not in a "dignified homage" sense, but more a "blatant plagurism" way.

I concur!

Also, at first I was a Tarantino fanatic (like many my age) I have all his movies and would watch them continuously, then I saw his interviews and I thought "what the fuck? 40 year old nerd eh?" and he was, I mean he's just a geeky balding teenager...

Went to see it today and I was wholly satisfied. It wasn't quite what I was expecting and it ended up being a lot like a comic book nerd spandex moist fantasy but I was in the mood for that, so I went along for the ride. I had a feeling of perpetual nerd joy as I watched the film and I didn't stop tingling until the very end. Hit Girl's action scenes made me feel physically warm, which probably says something about me but I don't care to dwell on that.

What amazes me about the process that has lead to this bloody comic book baby being birthed in live flesh before our eyes is that the last issue of Kick-Ass (the one that concludes the story presented in the film) was published in February of this year. I know they started production before the series was even finished, but that still strikes me as a speedy turnaround and maybe this is a sign of what we can expect with future comic book adaptions.

If you enjoyed the movie then I strongly advise you to read the comics, some of the shock value will be lost on you (and let's face it, that is a pretty important part of the Kick Ass experience) but there are a few things that will still surprise you.

That reminds me, I was in Minotaur two week-ends ago and there was Nemesis Issue 1. Which is written by Mark Millar (who is the kick-ass writer, or is it John Romita Jr.? No, wait, he's the artist, anyway...) and it was horribly written, the art was bland, and unless this was all part of his grand scheme, this was absolute shit. Nothing compared to Kick-Ass.

Anyway, the second Kick-Ass story will probably start production after Millar has realized what a piece of shit Nemesis is and he just continues the story. I want to see some bad-ass Red Mist :p

I hear there are movies that cater exclusively to that.

I think that's a pretty harsh judgment of the first issue of Nemesis. It does enough to keep you interested and it's clear that Millar has some fucked up shit in store for Morrow. On the art front, McNiven is widely considered to be one of Marvel's best artists, but what Nemesis proves to us is that he relies heavily on his regular colourist PIC Morry Hollowell, who is noticeably absent on this project. Still, while his art lacks that visual punch we are used to, he still has that slightly cinematic flair that makes things visually interesting.

I'm guessing Nemesis is also going to get the same film treatment as Kick Ass but like you I am also looking forward to the next Kick Ass installment. From what I hear, there will be some criminal supervillains (probably heavily featuring the Red Mist and the inevitable urethral exam that anyone who experiences this issue should undergo) plus a look at Hit Girl trying to live a "normal" life.

I mean the writing wasn't great, so it's not all Romita's fault. It's just how it's written, then again, I don't read many normal comics (mostly Graphic Novels) nowadays.
