After reading the Gamespot review of Vanquish, it looks like Platinum Games (those behind MadWorld, Bayonetta etc) have another hit on their hands. WILL YOU BUY IT?!

Jim Sterling gave it 5 out of 10.

Said all the good stuff was in the demo, and nothing else happens in the game. Also Punching and Boost bar are the same thing, so you cant punch someone then rocket skate away...

Yeah it sounds like a miss for me.

Uh huh.

To be honest, I'm keen to give it a go. Looks fun, and you can't really go wrong with Mikami.

Demo's are pretty good - TPS ain't really my thang but looks great and is quite fun to play. Gameplay's apparently a bit on the short side but grab it cheap from the UK or wait for a price drop and reckon you'd definately get your money's worth

It's hard to take Jim Sterling's word for anything because he has no baseline. He rates some games super highly and defiles others. Much like an eccentric man on a polygraph or the boy who cried wolf, you can't really tell when he's trolling or when he's being serious. Still, the man writes some entertaining stuff and is probably not meant to be taken seriously, like the Zero Punctuation reviews.

And yes, Rags. If I had the money at my disposal I'd be playing it right now. The demo and Mikami's involvement has me coloured interested.

Yeah, because all the those outlets were giving Modern Warfare 2 9's and 10's when it an utterly piss poor example of a Game.

Sorry for not blindly gobbling down the jizz of them all like you do.

Because you know, Gamespot is the bastion of reliable reviews and not taking cash for good scores.

... but you are listening to Jim Sterling? Why? He was the only person to give it a bad review and he is an awful critic.

You're just becoming more of an old man, CT. Ya old man. And I think MW2 is a bit different seeing as it was heavily hyped and Vanquish is from a n excellent developer.

Get dat sand outta ur vagina.

Its not about the game, its about the fact that these reviewers these days will give anything high scores.

I've disagreed with scores he's given before. Like Alpha Protocol.

Get their cocks outta ya mouth rags.

Well here's 2 early impressions from some people on WP who actually are playing the game as it's supposed to be played - not rushing through on Easy so they can slam out some half-assed review :P

Quote:

Very intense just like the demo but more so. It's non stop action. Even the cut scenes are jam packed.

I'm playing on Normal which is what I did for the demo and am only up to Act 2 stage 2.

Real time played so far 3 hours which I'm using a stopwatch to time, so far total deaths 15 - it's not like I have to do many sections again and again. There's no way in I'm going to polish this off this evening nor in under 5 hours.

Jim Sterling (Destructoid) would have been playing on easy to get through it that quickly. An indication he's not playing to enjoy the fun of the game but just to get through the content and write a review. If he and other reviewers are taking the time played from the statistics in game, then that's just ludicrious as that shows the completed mission times which excludes cut scenes, restarts from check points.

One of the game's measurement is the completed mission times to rank you and provide you with a calculated score. The less time, less deaths, more people you saved, less collateral damage taken, etc all contribute to a better score. It's the whole point of the gaming metrics to do it fast, not to state this game is actually short and not worth money.

Western interpretation of Japanese concepts for a lack of better term... obviously lost in translation.

One thing I do like is the good polish on the massive effects. A whole play arena can get swallowed up in an attack and it doesn't feel fake. A lot of the times the transition of scripted events just feels bad. These feel good. If a car rolls and blows around you, you feel like you need to get the hell out of the way of a heavy object. Not like many games where the object is bouncing like a paper ball in low grav.

The other thing I like is they are not afraid to consume big enemies. It doesn't feel like you are shooting hundreds of generic enemies they throw in a good big enemy drop or troop transport.

Another good thing is the enemy timing. If they use a heavy attack there is always an obvious (albeit quick) cooldown for you to return fire to an obvious intended target. This feels tight. Like the game rewards you for instant return fire, loaded and primed weapon and ARS timing save. It feels like every time you get a perfect reload in Gears. A reward for perfect weapon usage.

One thing I don't like is the often cheap death by random non audio queue boss or big enemy attack. Now I will take it like a man if I wander out into the field of fire and get owned by an obvious attack but I have noticed it is quick to deal you a death from full health from an attack that barely scathed you. I mean these boss fights are long enough with checkpointing on cheap death.

But overall the game is awesome. There is no letting up on the action.
