Just saw Persepolis at the cinema. It was really good and I needed to watch something with a bit of depth after last week's Zombie Strippers fiasco. The animation looks like its straight out of an indy comic and the movie was surprisingly funny given some of the subject material (Iranian revolution and the Iraq/Iran war). |

Leon, it WAS an indie graphic novel. It was translated years ago. I loved the graphic novel. I liked the movie version of Ghost World so I'm probably gonna go watch it. Sorry but I didn't know if you did know it was a comic/graphic novel. |

Yeah, I did know, I just wanted to say that it was kinda like the Sin City movie in that the movie looked like it had been translated visually from a comic book. I haven't actually read Persepolis yet. The Ghost World movie was good and I had read the comic before seeing that one. Haven't seen Art School Confidential (should probably check it out). Could you imagine a movie version of Like A Velvet Glove Cast in Iron? I read it as a kid, and some of the images have been stuck in my head for years (the crustaceans cleaning out the eye sockets is one example). |

Aye, but since you said "an indy comic" not "the indie comic" I wasn't sure. Ghost World was awesome. I want this other comic, I forget the name, I'll check later to be made into movie. It was about this guy in the war. The Jews are mice, the germans are cats and some pigs but I forget who they were. I'll fetch out the book and look. And their was this really good horror manga. So good. Gore and everything. I'm really pissed because I can't remember the name. It was so awesome. Their was one guy who was afraid of spirals and so eventually he died (his body in the shape of spiral) and his wife became terrified of spirals too. So the woman shaved the skin off her fingers and they took her to a Doctor and he had a poster on his wall about the ear and she saw that spiral looking bit (god damn my memory) and took a pen and drove it into her ear. It was such an awesome book. |

Don't know about the manga but I'm pretty sure the other book you were talking about is Maus. The way that book was presented is unbelievable. You identify all the Jewish characters with mice and then at the conclusion (I can't remember if this is at the end of Maus or Maus II) you are shown a real photo of Vladek Spiegelman. Seeing that image really shocked me, and put the whole story into context for me. In terms of turning it into a movie, I'm not so sure it would work, especially the bits where the book gets self-referential. One of the reasons that Alan Moore refuses to associate himself with the movies made of his stories is that he writes comics with a goal in mind (Promethea was an attempt at religious enlightenment, Watchmen was a deconstruction of the superhero genre etc). In his opinion the stories he wants to tell can only be done through the comic book medium. I currently subscribe to this philosophy and have yet to see a movie based on a comic book that has proven to me otherwise. Ghost World was a good movie but just the fact that it was a movie gave it a different feel to the comic. |

Two totally different Media... Only two tha tI would say have come close are 300 and Sin City...they strive to give the original feel of the Graphic Novels, which is now attainable through CG.. But fact is, Comic Book movies will never capture the soul of the books....they just put our fantasies into a 3D reality.....which I for one dont mind, now that Marvel are producing their own movies. |

Alan Moore agrees. Although it's been a good year for comic book movies. |
