Ok, so I've decided that we'll begin discussing it on the 15th. That means just over a week for everyone to have watched it. If you haven't, get moving. |

So I viddied the film tonight while taking in a warm glass of freshly squeezed milk plus drencrom. As a fan of the ol' ultra-violence, I found the film's opening act to be a right horrorshow. Beyond the violence I noticed a lot of sexual imagery which got thoughts of the old in-out stuck in my gulliver. The music was great, Ludwig Van's 9th was used cleverly and the main theme was memorable, setting a good and foreboding tone whenever it was heard. As for the storyline, I found it riveting in some places and a little slow in others, while the character of Alex remained particularly fascinating for me throughout. There you go sir, that's all I have to say for the moment. I've got to rest. Got to get fit. Otherwise I'm liable to miss a lot more school. |

Ok, so you should have done your homework, kiddies. Time for lively discussion. The most striking thing for me is that Kubrick really doesn't seem to take sides in this. Disaffected youth, the "system", lefties and righties alike all seem to cop a serve. The performance of Malcolm McDowell sells the movie, even if his voice does remind you a lot of Eric Idle. Perhaps that's a product of the time. I'll await reply, then continue. |

I need to watch it again because I watched the first half, fell asleep, then watched the other half and it has affected my memory. But.. first off, I really enjoyed it. I understand that without correct narrative structure the movie isn't able to reach a fulfilling ending, but (and I hate to compare it in this way) I found that it suffered the DeathNote paradigm, in that I wanted the character to succeed completely, as he was far more likeable then all other characrters (especially his friends). The ending was excellent though. I'll continue this after further discussion. (my IT substitute teacher is having a whinge, probably needs some of the ol' in out) |

What about the Chaplain/Priest as a representative of the religious faction? As the advocate of fee will in the movie I thought his views didn't seem to receive an obvious counter. The Chaplain's religion was drawn into question, since the bible which gave him the inspiration to act for the greater good was also used to fuel Alex's fantasies of ultraviolence. So I guess this taints the Chaplain's religious nature but as a proponent of Alex's freedom he remains uncorrupted. (Just like Zin, only one watch means I may have missed something obvious/important here) |

Seffy and I vote Gattaca for this round. Only problem is that it's 12 years old. Can it still qualify if If not eligible: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. |

I think more than anything, it shows how easily religion can be used for personal gain. Alex's deception were the grounds for his release, and his fantasies were inspired by the bible. If not for the auspices of compassion and redemption, the tale ends with Alex stuck in prison. Perhaps it's also a dig at pride, as the pride the chaplain felt as the redeemer of this murderer was the catalyst to another series of terrible events. |

Having not read the book, I'm not sure how much of this is attributable to Kubrick, but I really liked the way the unique slang was rolled out. I understand that Burgess created the language himself, but it was the way it worked in the film that impressed me. During the opening scene in the milk bar I was initially confused as my mind tried to make sense of the speech. After quickly working out what was happening with their language I found that these new words were used frequently enough that their meaning could be determined relatively easily from their context. As the movie progressed I got the feeling that I was gradually being let into Alex's world as I became more familiar with his vocabulary. This is an experience that I've never had before when watching a movie. |
