Pretending that the rest of Kiva didn't happen
|
Many years ago, the worst recorded magical storm in the Dominion’s history struck the city state of Soraira. It killed thousands, razed buildings, and moved the earth; in fact, the storm’s power was enough to literally raise the entire city state from the earth and suspend it in the air permanently. In the present, an enormous lake has formed where Soraira once stood; within, the civilization of Submersum grows, inhabited mainly by Merfolk, who are thought to be magical mutants created in the storm’s aftershock. The lake’s surface is enormous, taking up a large chunk of the Dominion, but its depths are, for the most part, relatively short. The Merfolk have built cities underneath Submersum’s surface; with wood being at an understandable shortage in a world of water, the majority of Submersum’s buildings are either built with stone or foraged out of organic structures, with either structures built out of coral or bones or just a city built into a tunnel. Speaking of tunnels, many of them litter Submersum’s floor. Few have been fully explored; many of them go down far enough for the pressure to crush any potential adventurers, and almost all of them hold creatures unfathomable on the surface world. While some stable, normal varieties of fish and other creatures have emerged in shallow waters, allowing some commerce to flow through the city state, freakish and unnatural sea monsters still lurk Submersum’s depths, mainly in the tunnels. It is thought that a majority of these creatures were created in the magical storm that caused the lake to surface to begin with. Merfolk are fairly well respected in the Dominion; they are intelligent, capable of speaking the common tongue, and useful, being able to comfortably and easily venture into Submersum’s depths. Of late, the Dominion has started to look more seriously into the lake’s underbelly, purging many of the monsters beneath the water’s surface. Unspeakable monsters still lurk in places where even the Dominion fears to tread, however, waiting for any foolish adventurers who need to learn their place on the food chain. |
