Name: Caal Travask
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Race: Merfolk

Occupation: Bounty hunter, mercenary, and a wandering law-man.

Personality: To say that Caal is serious is an understatement. The merman rarely cracks a smile, or shows any kind of enjoyment toward anything. Those that encounter him often comment to their peers that they doubt he has any emotions at all. When he blows into town, he comes for one thing, and that's to get something done, and he always get it done with a cold, calculating efficiency.

He has little time for anything but upholding his own code of morals. Most of his personal code does not conflict with standard law, but his methods of enforcing them could be viewed as harsh sometimes. It is often that he is seen wading through a group of vanquished bandits, disregarding their cries of pain. He displays no compassion for those that do wrong, and is not kind enough to end their miserable lives when they are in excruciating pain.

When he is not working a job, he keeps an ear out for anything he could do to help. In the event that someone is looking for someone to help them do something, like move cargo or put up a fence, he will begin the task without a word, often inciting confusion. In fact, he barely speaks at all, sometimes going weeks without speaking a word to a soul. Still, he does like to observe conversations, especially when they pertain to rumors that could lead to jobs.

It seems that he only speaks when necessary, but in reality, he usually doesn't know what to say. Enforcing his code is all he truly knows, and in social settings he tends to sit around rather awkwardly. The bottom line is that he simply doesn't know how to conduct himself properly around others, which can lead to some interesting situations.

History: Being born with an affinity for magic is not that uncommon among the Merfolk. As such, quite a few begin training under the watchful eye of the Dominion, becoming powerful mages for the Inquisition. They tend to go on to become indispensable assets in the fight against the rebels and a mighty force to keep the citystates in line.

Occasionally, however, there is an error. Sometimes, someone slips through the supposed perfect grasp of the Dominion and doesn't become an Inquisitor. These few are typically hunted, hated, and driven away from society at large.

One such person was Belaal Travask. No one ever discovered why or how he removed himself from the Inquisition, but that didn't change the fact that he was hunted down for such an extreme crime. He took his wife with him and fled to un-mapped parts of the great lake. In secrecy, they began a new life, raising a son and avoiding the massive monsters that lurked in the depths.

Caal grew up oblivious to the troubles that had led his family to live in such awful circumstances. He wouldn't even learn of this until much later in his life, when he was full-grown man. In the early years, his father taught him the basics of survival in the lake, telling him how to avoid monsters and even teaching him a few basic spells when they discovered his attunement to magic. Ever now and again, they would travel to the surface, practicing the skills needed to survive there too. Around the age of 8, Caal's father began to teach him how to fight as well, knowing that one day he'd have to defend himself. Caal took to the lessons quickly and proved himself somewhat of a prodigy with a sword. As he got older, he even began to show his father new techniques. His magical prowess grew as well, but never quite reached the awe-invoking levels his father had achieved, though he did show a certain aptitude for barriers and force magic.

Shortly after Caal turned 20, tragedy struck. His home was destroyed by a wandering leviathan, killing his mother and fatally wounding his father. In the last hour of his life, Belaal parted to his son the reason they lived the way they did, warning him to trust only his own judgement, and not to swear blind obedience to anyone. He told Caal that the reason he fled from the Inquisition was he refused to kill a woman still holding her child, even though the woman was supposedly a rogue mage. All he had seen in that woman was someone trying to survive and care for her child.

Caal swore to his father that he would commit his words to heart, and watched his father die. Soon, he buried them beneath a bed of coral and the went to the surface, where he wandered for a long time. Over the next few years, he began to become somewhat infamous, rumors starting to spread about a hooded vigilante who drifted from to town, dispensing justice as he saw fit. His travel took him across the land, each job he took expanding his skills and solidifying his moral code.

After 10 years, he returned to his home in the lake, and hunted down the beast that killed his family and destroyed his home. He slew the beast and claimed a tooth for himself, feeling the need for both a souvenir and a new weapon.

Since then, Caal returned to his travels, prepared to do whatever it took to both survive and uphold his code.

Appearance: He stands around 5' 10" and has dark blue-grey skin. His arms seem just a little too long for his body, and his hands slightly too large. The grooves upon his body do not curve naturally like they do on many of his kin, but instead have rather sever angles to them, creating an almost geometric look. His facial features are harsh and serious, looking like he's nearly angry even when he relaxes. His head is smooth and bald, with small ridges on top.

His clothes are simple and practical, all of them looking like they have seen many adventures. He usually wears a large hooded poncho, which covers up his entire torso and most of his arms. Underneath, he wears a tunic with long, loose sleeves that can cover his hands. His legs are likewise covered by cloth pants that fit loosely. The effect of these clothes makes it hard for most to tell his body type, and the hood keeps his identity hidden, making it even harder to even tell what race he is. The only thing that gives that away is his tail, a long, slender thing that sticks out of a hole in his pants.

When it's time for him to go underwater, he sheds his clothes and reveals the most impressive part of his wardrobe; the jewelry. He is covered practically head to toe in various piercings, most of which are nothing but mundane silver and gold, but these are not the ones that would draw the eye. The most notable part of the jewelry are the crystals. Certain earrings have low-tier crystals hanging off them. Beyond these, his forearms both have a large bracelet that actually clips into his skin. They each boast a mid-tier crystal set into the jade bracelet. The most eye-catching of all is the large mid-tier crystal set at the center of his chest. It is a foot long, and held to his body both by multiple gold piercings and small gold chains that wrap around his body. The crystal attaches to the piercings through a thin gold casing, gilded and embroidered with silver.

Weapon: Caal wields two weapons, both of which he is highly proficient with. The first is a gently curved sword made from the amazingly tough tooth of a leviathan. He claimed it after vanquishing the beast by allowing it to swallow him whole and then destroying it from the inside. The other weapon is a heavy crossbow made from a giant scorpion's stinger, a creature that he killed during a brief foray into Jouhendrayl. He also had a large number of special bolts made that contain the poison from the same beast.

Magic: Caal is a decent caster, but wouldn't necessarily be called the best. The main reason people stand in awe of his ability is how he he uses magic, instead of the spells themselves. He commonly uses body and destruction magic in a fight. The crystals that pierce his body are used as focal points for his barriers, allowing him to create magic armor for himself instantly if need be. Apart from this, he uses the crystals on his hands to blast his opponents with raw force, pushing them around and causing minimal damage. The force magic is what he is best at, and can focus it to the point of being able to throw certain limbs off balance by themselves. He also uses this same magic to dash through a battle.

Have you read all the stickies? Yupperoni

You have a top-tier crystal just stuck in your chest? This is still a starting character dude, where are you going to work to if you already have something that insanely powerful and valuable? Like, a lightning mage could do something awful like the tiny force lightning bolts with a low tier crystal, chain lightning and thunderbolts with a mid tier, and actually make a full on storm like unto the wrath of god with a top-tier one. They're like spell levels 1-3, 4-6, and 7-9 in D&D terms, is the impression I got from them.

I don't actually know if I should be posting, there's no strict rule for or against, but dude, come on, I know you know what a starting character is capable of.
