Snow. Always snow. It wasn't so that Atazos disliked the snow, it was just the same thing every single day. After so many days trapped in Asharei, it was beginning to get old. The Novali man sighed as he looked out of his current shelter, a overhang in the alleyway next to a heat vent from one of the buildings. He watched the snow fall down and build up the ever growing snow drifts that bordered each wall and nook. At this point, the out-of-work Sky Pirate was just procrastinating. He really deserved a break after spending another fruitless week looking for work. However, he was down to his last ten coins and it was time to get a move on.

Again, he sighed, getting to his feet and re-buttoning the top button of his black, worn coat. The white fur lining blocked the chilled air from his neck and torso. His white hands slipped into his pockets as he began to survey the area outside of the alleyway. He was looking or a few key things, easy marks to pick pocket were high on the priority list. What he really needed though was a job, so a wanted ad or work bulletin would be the best thing he could hope for.

The area outside of the dark alleyway was still rather uncrowded Only a few people could be seen walking by, probably about to head off to work considering some of them were looking at their pocket watches and afterwards picking up speed. Seemed about right anyway, most of the buisnesses and stores should have been open by now.

Most of the people coming along the snowy stone path were heading toward the Tomali Square, a somewhat smaller market place in the city. Aside from the blacksmith and other smaller buisnesses many merchants usually set up their stands around the square during this time, sometimes a little later depending on the wheater. Not really any outside races though, the imperial guard had been very strict about that for quite a while now. No one probably remembered for how long anyway, most of them had yet to see another race at all most likely.

The much less active street Atazos was still standing in did not have much to offer in comparison. There was a pub right across the street though. "The Divine Hand" it was oddly called, it did not really look all that divine at all from the outside. It was more like old and perhaps even ready to fall over at any minute. There was a bulletin board of sorts nailed to the wall next to the door of the pub, not much seemed to be posted on it though looking from far away. However there might just be something and that could just be enough.

The Novali man smiled a little to himself as he noticed the people going back and forth. He loved this time of day more than any other. This was the time of day when the people were busy and distracted, wanting to get from point A to point B without stopping for anything lest they be late for work. His smile faded as he began to walk a little faster. His hands were out to his side, loose and ready for the underhanded tactics he would make.

The sky pirate walked over to the pub and pretended to read the signs, waiting for the right time. His black eyes scanned the words on the papers, again, not reading them but looking like he was reading. After a few minutes, he pantomimed, pretending to be frustrated by the lack of... whatever he was pretending to be looking for. He then turned and walked, fast into whoever was walking the opposite way. Atazos didn't even look at the stranger's face as he slipped his hand into their pocket swiftly, attempting to steal whatever was in it. He pulled back, apologizing and moving on as if it were a common, everyday accident....

The man Atazos bumped into just gave him a irritated look as a response to his apologies. The man was obviously in a hurry and did not stay to pick a fight and instead quickly moved on and disappeared down the path toward the square. He did not notice a single thing, and when he eventually did Atazos would already be long gone.

In his hand, Atazos was now holding a pocket watch. It was not a very fancy model and it did look like it had been used for quite some time judging by some marks in the copper cover. A chain was missing from it aswell. It was still working quite nicely though it seemed, so it would possibly be worth at least a few gold pieces at some clock worker's place. However there was some initials written on the backside of the watch. T.A it said. It didn't really ring a bell, but for someone else it might have. It would maybe be a good idea to be careful with selling it to just anyone.

Atazos smiled at the brass watch in his hand. It was exactly what he needed, something simple, small and would disappear into a market in a flash... He held it up to his ear, still walking down the road to try and hear the sound of the ticking watch. Again, his lips turned up as he heard the mechanics inside ticking and whirling. It was perfect... aside from the monogram on the back. It was a small inconvenience as he would just go to the shadier part of town to fetch some coins for it later. It seemed to work out best for everyone. He would get to eat this night, and the poor bloke he pilfered would be without a cheap watch. Balance, it would seem, was tilting slightly in his favor this day.

The bandit peered up and down the street, looking for more easy mark, notable happening, and town guards. Some of them knew his face by now, but he had never been caught. This didn't stop some of them from harassing him from time to time, and he didn't blame them. In his worn out, dark clothes, he came across as bad company... and he was bad company. It was just more overt when it came to him rather than other gentlemen of his profession. Atazos began to whistle a sailing song while his black eyes scanned the waves of people coming his way, keeping sharp eyes open for people who may want a certain watch back from his greedy, white clutches.

People kept appearing down the snowy path, however most of the actual buisnessmen seemed to be gone for today, until they would return on their way home of course. The new people that appeared were mostly merchants with their wares pushed in carts. The snow had calmed down by now, so they probably saw their opportunity to set up shop in the square. Some of them were talking loudly to each other about rather boring things like the latest snow period being harsher than usual and prices for fish and what not. It would probably be a excellent opportunity to steal something while they were all up in their own buisness, however there was one problem. The guards.

As expected no less than two imperial guard men where patroling after the merchants. It was rather common that the guards where stationed to take these routes and follow along the merchants to the squares, making sure that no one tried anything funny on the way. The city was strict, and being a criminal was made a lot less attractive considering that, and of course the punishments.

The first guard gave Atazos a hard look, as if to say; keep your hands off or we'll cut them off you. The second one was a lot less harsh and simply gave him a honest nod of authority. At least not all of them were complete douchebags, and thankfully they left Atazos alone this time. Else he would most likely have the pocket watch taken away faster than he could blink. If they were not busy with making sure the merchants got to the square safetly though... They would probably coom back soon.

Atazos looked wearily at the guards as they passed by. They didn't know his face, but they could probably tell when someone was up to no-good when they saw someone like him. He didn't want to end up with his hands cut off or even thrown in a cell for the night. The temptation to steal from some of the easy targets was being outweighed by the risk that was present from the guards watching him... but one watch wouldn't feed him for long and perfect situations like this didn't rise every day. Atazos looked to two Novali talking about the weather and everything, not paying much attention to whatever was going on as they shot the shit.

He glanced at the eyes and the angles of view. If he kept up behind, he would be invisible from both of their eyes, but would look suspicious to the guards. Since there were two guards, he didn't want to risk getting caught - running away from both would not be easy. The only way he would get away with it would be to cause a distraction, swipe what he could, and causally walk away... The gears began to turn as he walked slowly past the merchants talking. Then he smiled and walked over to the two.

He spoke up. "Excuse me, sir." He needed to get his attention for his plan to work. "Do you run that stand over there?" He pointed to an unattended stand that was quite a distance away, hoping that he would acknowledge it. It wouldn't even need to be his for the plan to work. "There's a bag of gold just laying there, split open on the ground... I thought I'd let you know so someone doesn't walk off with a few pieces." He smiled honestly, trying to come off as a good Samaritan. All he needed was to get the second merchant alone...

The merchant Atazos approached looked away from his friend and scanned the shady newcomer up and down. At first he seemed suspicious about the young man and turned his head away from Atazos without even considering what he had to say to him. But then he could hear from the corner of his ear the mentioning of gold and he quickly turned his head back and looked at where Atazos was pointing. Luckily the merchant was greedy enough to be fooled.

"That is my stand, yes!" the merchant lied. "Thank you, my boy, for telling me." he continued and quickly said good bye to his friend before rushing away towards the stands. Now only the other merchant was left just as Atazos had planned, but there was one problem; the guards. Obviously the merchant's sudden rush had gotten one of the guards attentions and the first person he approached was of course Atazos. The other guard continued on towards the square instead.

The one who had been less harsh before was the one who approached them. Hopefully that was a good thing. "Is there a problem here? Is this man causing you trouble sir?" he asked the merchant and gave Atazos a quick look. It was rather obvious that he did not completely trust Atazos, and why what reason did he have for doing so anyway?

The rather old looking merchant shook his head and smiled gently. "No, no, there is nothing to be worried about. The young man was just trying to help." he said, thankfully for Atazos.

"Very well then, carry on." with the same nod of authority as he had given before and a last suspicious look at Atazos the guard walked passed them both and continued walking into the square and back to patroling the streets. This had been one lucky encounter, and thankfully it had not ended in any chasing or anything. But this might just have been a one time thing, who knew when the luck would turn against him if he wasn't careful.

Once again the old merchant turned his head and looked at Atazos with his small black eyes. "I know that there is not my friends stand." he said calmly and smiled. "What exactly is it that you are after, boy? If it is food you are after then I might just have something over for you." It was not a surprise that the old man had seen that Atazos was not a man of wealth, not even a man of any kind of money in general. Unlike many others though he was offering to help a complete stranger, and someone that he most likely knew was just a simple thief.

Atazos was actually a little surprised by the overall outcome of it all. When the first man left, he was beginning to think about the obvious flaws in his on-the-fly plan. When he was the guard approach, he was afraid he would have to high-tail as soon as possible... but the second merchant gave him the all-clear. Atazos looked at the second merchant, seeing that he not trusted. The second man could see through his obvious lie because of his intimate knowledge of the first. This was one of the flaws that Atazos didn't consider until after the fact. But, something he didn't expect was happening... rather than threaten him or rat him out to the guards, he offered to help him.

The sky pirate suddenly felt a little bad for wanting to steal from this man, but that was why he never stopped to get to know his marks. A thief he may have been, but Atazos was not without a heart. He looked to the back of the first man, still going to look for the non-existent gold in the stand. "Well..." He decided his luck had brought him this far, so he decided to do something that may have seemed dumb to a common thief... tell the truth. "I am very hungry, sir..." He didn't want to flat out tell him that he planned on stealing from him, but he assumed that the man had inferred that already from his shady actions.

With a smile the old man nodded lightly and then turned to his cart and started to look through it. What exactly his motives were or if there were some kind of catch to the whole thing was still not very clear. Though he did not seem like he wanted anything at all for his kindness. "Take some things from my cart, young man. It is not much but hopefully it will help you for the day." the old man said and turned back to Atazos.

He presented him with a loaf of bread wrapped in a paper sheet. It was still hot and freshly baked. He also handed over a bag of different dry fruit. There was probably enough for at least a while, even if it did not fill up the stomach all that much. Most of all it was a rather expensive kind of food, not a lot of people could afford it regularly at all.

"If you ever need something my stand is right over there." the old man pointed over to one of the stands in the square. He smiled and once again started moving towards the square.

Atazos took the loaf of bread without a word. He could feel the heat of the fresh loaf pressing through the paper and warming his hands against the snow... He was more than a little dumb struck as he saw no obvious ill intentions in the gift. The sky pirate looked to the merchant as he began to walk away, trying to get a good look at his face. Such kindness was uncommon to him, a set of unfortunate circumstances that had left him a little cold and uncaring towards the world in general. As a result, he gave the world what he got, taking them for what they had and benefiting himself. This was a refreshing change from the ordinary, but the kindness of one man wouldn't change his view on life. He tried his hardest to commit what the man looked like to memory and gave a nod. "Thank you very much, sir..." And, not really knowing what else to say, there was an awkward pause before he left.

Atazos walked down the street, his back to the man and the square as he headed for a different pub to try and pick up some leads on a bit of legitimate work. He pulled off pieces of the loaf in his hand and thought back to his old crew again, thinking about all the good times he had as a deckhand on the Leviathan, then a quartermaster, and, finally, the first mate. It was a good time, a time filled with adventure, bonding, and lots and lots of booze. He smiled, recalling that as the last time that he had known anything aside from selfishness. His sky pirate brethren may have been in business for themselves, but they were stronger as a unit, and they knew it well enough to not betray each other. In a way, they were more than an arranged group of thieves who lived on the same ship; they were a band of brothers, brought together by strange circumstances.

He snapped back to reality. It was strange how these days even the little things, like the warmth of bread, made him nostalgic. He chuckled quietly and stopped in his tracks. There was bulletin board outside of a pub. He looked it up and down, looking for some kind of legitimate work. While reading, he pulled a piece of the steamy loaf off and ate it.

There was not a lot of things posted on the bulletin board really. Wanted posters were very rarely posted on the boards since it was mostly seen as a guard buisness rather than anyone elses. Huge crimes were not really that common in the city either due to the high level of security. There were however some buisnesses that seemed to be needing some extra man power at the moment.

There was a cargo mover needed up in the storage of the north ship tower during the busy hours. A temporary job because of a sick co-worker it seemed. 100 gold pieces a day it said. Not a extremely well paid job, but at least it was as close to a ship Atazos could get at the moment and maybe that was just enough for now.

The workers in the mine outside of the city were in need of assitance aswell. 500 gold pieces a day. It made sense though, there had been a lot of talk lately about the mine workers and how they had been forced to pick up the speed recently. The reason for the speeding up their work was pretty much unknown to everyone. Some of the mine workers themselves did not even know, and the ones who did had most likely been strictly told to shut up about it. It could of course just be in order to obtain more iron and other kinds of ore, after all it was widely used materials. Though that did not quite explain the rush.

It seemed like there was a guardian force at work this day. Atazos smiled as his eyes fell on the shipyard work. Short and non-beneficial as the work would be, he was sick of pick pocketing for that day. The work was a shoe-in for him as he could rig a sail, repair a propeller, scrub a deck, and even, if necessary, evade some military ships; though he was certain he wouldn't need to do that. Besides... the feeling of standing on the ground was wearing on his very soul. After so many years of living on an airship, he grew to hate the feeling of standing and sleeping on the ground. The lack of the sound of the propellers whirling may have seemed comforting to some, but there were many restless nights for him. He longed for the feeling of the high altitude, he longed for the sounds... he even missed the crappy dried food. It was settled.

Atazos ripped the flyer off the board and folded it up. He slipped it into his pocket and began to walk towards the shipyard. He paid no mind to the miner poster - he hated standing on the ground so the last thing he wanted was to be under it. He stopped looking for marks to steal from, but he kept a hand on his own wallet. For the most part, low lives didn't pick on other low lives, but there were exceptions. He kept gnawing at the loaf of bread in his hand, thankful to whatever force seemed to be watching over him for the food.

The three ship towers were the tallest buildings in the entire city and could be seen clearly from any point in the city. The towers made it possible for traders and other ships to store, leave and pick up cargo without having to actually pull down to the ground. It made for a faster process, which was more or less crucial during some of the harder periods of wind and snow. The north tower that Atazos was heading to was not very far away from where he had picked up the bulletin board ad.

Atazos eventually approached the tower. Even if one had seen the towers before it was almost impossible not to be amazed by the size of the buildings. It made everything around it seem unimportant somehow. The gates that were just as impressive and huge stood open before Atazos.

Inside there were smooth stone floors, clear enough for one to see his own reflection. The walls were build up with a more rough stone held up by balks of fine wood. There were two steam powered elevators in the end of the room that would fast and efficiently move workers and other people up and down the tower. Right next to the door was a sort of reception where a young lady was sitting behind the wooden counter writing in a book, seemingly not noticing Atazos at all. Her blue and white robe and the emblem on it gave away that she was part of the imperial guard, most likely a spell caster or something along those lines. It was probably here Atazos had to apply for the work.

It was true that the skyport towers of Asharei could be seen from anywhere in the city on a clear day, but it had been some time since Atazos had put forth the effort to look up at them. When he was a pirate, the towers represented the military power of the Empire. They were the enemy of the pirates, the enemy of freedom. The Leviathan soared high above even the towers in the lawless skies. Now, he lived in the very city that housed them, representing how trapped he was. He felt no pleasure in crawling back to them for a simple paycheck, but it was a small price to pay to get the old feeling back again. It had been so long it was like he was living without breathing. The simple joys in life had been dulled and the only things that made him happy were the things that reminded him of his pirating days.

Once inside the building, he closed his eyes and sighed. This sterile environment, the bureaucratic feel... it was the feeling of the Empire. He gritted his teeth in frustration, but forced a smile through it. He could get through this... working a job that was based out of am imperial skyport didn't make him a traitor - there was no code or alliance he had to adhere to. The captain would have found the who situation hilarious, a pirate working right under the Empire's nose. He swallowed what little pride he had and dusted off his jacket before going over to the desk where the secretary sat.

The Novali took the flyer out of his pocket and slapped it onto the desk. He smiled, his teeth showing in a grin as he laid on his inherent, bad boy charm. "Good morning, beautiful. I'm here in regards to this opening. I've got years of work experience on a ship under my belt. I can shovel coal, mend a bullet wound, and repair an exploded propeller with two nail and a length of rope." His fingers tapped on the desk. He didn't actually expect the lady to be the employer, and he didn't care. He loved to grief soldiers when he could, even if it was limited to flirting with cute spell-caster girls.

Deeply lost in the book infront of her the young spell caster did not even notice Atazos approaching the desk, not until he slammed the flyer onto the desk with his hand. Startled she almost jumped up from her chair where she was sitting, but quickly took a deep breath when she saw Atazos and heard him begin to speak. For just a second there she was expecting trouble, she did not exactly know what kind though.

She smiled lightly and let Atazos finish his bragging as she picked up the flyer in her hand and quickly examined it. Her smile was warm, even more so in the contrast of her almost snow white skin. She had short black hair with dark gray streaks that were almost not noticable if you didn't pay much attention to them. Once he was done the spell caster looked up at him with a somewhat questioning look on her face and said in a sarcastic tone "With so much experience on your hands how come you are not stationed on a ship already?". She smiled and flipped through a few pages in the book. "I am kidding of course." she continued as she picked up the book and placed it infront of Atazos.

The page had a few names written down on it, most likely the workers of the tower. The spell caster handed a pen over to Atazos and smiled again. "You have to write your name down here. When you get here in the morning and when you leave during the evening you report to me." she said and waited for Atazos to finish writing his name down before she could give him more instructions.

Atazos was more than a little surprised that the pretty and studious Imperial spellcaster didn't try to raze him with a fireball or even slap him across the face for flirting with her. From what he could tell, his rude and sudden coming-on had actually struck a chord with her. He smiled, his teeth showing a little. "No problem." He took the pen and wrote his name, first and last, into the book. He didn't care about going on record since there were no pirates who ever called him by his real name anyway. Any pirate worth his salt had a handle to evade the authorities or make it hard to identify him. What was even more comforting about this book was the lack of a picture. His name alone wouldn't be enough to track him down in a million years.

After filling out the book, he set the pen down and locked his eyes with her own set of opaque optical receptors. He smiled at her charmingly as he tried to see how far he could press before she got sick of him. "All set, gorgeous. Now just point me where I need to go and all your problems will be over." He punctuated this self-worshiping brag-fest with a playful wink in her direction. He then realized that he had instinctively leaned against the desk and into slapping distance.

His obvious flirting did not really bother her that much, she did however wonder what exactly he was trying to do and where he wanted to go with it. She did not keep eye contact for very long though and instead took the book and the pen back while she let Atazos finish his flirting smooth talk. "Cute." she said, again with that same sarcastic joking tone in her voice that she had used just a moment ago. It didn't seem like she really took it for serious at all.

She took look at the page where Atazos had written his name and quickly wrote something that he couldn't see beside the name. "Alright then, Atazos." she said while finishing the writing and then she looked up at him, once again with a smile. "You take the left elevator." she pointed over to one of the steam powered elevators in the end of the room. "It will take you to the storage rooms, there you should be able to find a person under the name of Baile Treaver. He will be giving you further instructions on what to do."

"I should probably introduce myself aswell, I am Moira Tabanov. I take care of paper work, cargo orders and pretty much all the background work in the north tower." Even though she did not make it sound like it there was probably a lot of work just for one person. Her smile seemed to cover cover that up pretty good aswell, she did not seem overworked at least. But she was pretty clever, so most likely they knew what they did when they had placed her there. "You should get moving now though, I am sure we'll get time to talk more another time." she said as she flipped a few pages in the book and once again lost herself in it.

Atazos nodded. "Pleasure to meet you, Moria... and yeah, I had better get a move on. Time is money." He shot a smirk her way and then turned. He was now utterly amazed that his flirting didn't earn him the smack to the face he was waiting for, but he was not saddened by it. The fact she found his antics comical was rather encouraging. But at the moment, he had other issues to worry his mind with. Money related issues.

The Novali man went to the elevator that Moria had pointed out and got onto it. Once on, he was on the elevator, he looked at the panel. He didn't see a button saying 'storage' room on it, but he assumed that pressing the top button would lead him to the room she was talking about. He hit it, activating the steam-powered wench. The wheels began to spin and steam hissed from the motor. The cord attached to the elevator began to wind up, making the elevator move upward. Atazos leaned against the railing, thinking about the last time he was on a lift like this. It was back on his first day of recruit training. That was the day that he became a deck hand and the last contact with civilian society before becoming a pirate. He looked back on it fondly as the day that he ascended from the prison of firmament and took flight in his rightful home, the sky. This time, though, he did not expect anything more than a few gold coins and a generic thanks for the work he would provide.

Soon the steam powered elevator reached the end of the line, the storage floor. The wheels slowly stopped and the motor took one last breath of steam before it shut down. The storage floor was rather big, and there were boxes, sacks, containers and barrels all over the place, very neatly placed down in their appropriate spot though of course.

The sound of the elevator engine made a few of the workers on the floor look away from their work for just a little moment to see who had entered. Some of them were on their way carrying cargo while others were counting and double checking newly arrived supplies. It was well organized at least, not like that was unexpected for the Empire though. Things were usually very much by the book and obviously trading- and supply ships were part of that ideal.

One of the workers suddenly approached Atazos where he was standing. As he came closer it became very apparent that he was very tall, big and muscular. He had black long hair and a somewhat thick beard, which was rather uncommon among Novali, actually facial hair in general was generally something you did not see. His skin also had much more colour to it than most other Novali. It was a little strange. However the man stopped infront of Atazos and a smile could be seen poking through the thick beard of his.

"You must be the temporary guy, am I right?" very friendly he reached out his big hand to greet the newcomer. "The name's Baile Treaver, I am the foreman of the north tower storage." It was hard to believe that a man that looked like he could destroy a house with his bare fists was the foreman for the establishment, but it was probably best not to question it either.
