Preparation for a Raid

Jaz leaned over the railing on the edge of The Mary Lou . A steamship that once served in The Royal Navy or something like that. Jaz didn't really pay much attention to the story the captain told of how he got this ship or if the story was even true. But that didn't matter because this ship would be hers someday or she would buy or capture her own ship. Have her own crew. Too many perverts around in this business. Her old crew was thriving with those bastards, she was glad this captain had taken over the old vessel she served on. But she was getting ahead of herself. Today she had to focus on the raid, and proving herself as capable member of this crew. Right now she was just some girl they had allowed to live and serve on their vessel from a raid. Oh and one who had fought against them rather valiantly but still they all seemed to forget that point. Even the ones she had shot with her two shot pistol that had survived. Still nothing more to do then to wait for orders.

The Mary Lou was docked at Port Havenedge as Jaz looked over the side of the ship. The only other people topside of the hull of the average sized pirate vessel were a human girl in a blue royal blue outfit that looked to be a modified version of a military uniform, a Novali boy with goggles strapped to his forehead and dressed in brown leather, and the esteemed captain, a human-looking individual whom had hired on Jaz as a new member of the crew. As the other two got ready for the raid ahead, as Jaz was doing, the captain's steel colored eyes rested on the back of Jaz's head with a solid gaze, the look of a man who was trying to access someone's worth. He had kept the new girl on to his crew with a feeling in his gut that she had the potential to bring them great fortune in their endeavors... but it things turned out to go sour, this first mission with her may be their final one as the skies did not easily forgive incompetence.

The scruffy captain walked across the deck, his boots clunking across the wooden boards. He came to a stop a few feet away from her and cleared his throat to grab he attention. As he did this, the other two on top of the deck also looked; when Captain N'realo spoke, people nearby had a tendency to drop what they were doing to listen to his word. "Jaz... I wish to have a word with you." His metallic eyes beamed down at her, not judging, but in the same manner they always did. "This mission to intercept the trade vessel Gloria is not going to be a safe one. Although it won't be the same as battle with a militarized ship, there is a chance they will resist. If they do, I cannot guarantee any individual crew member's survival." He coughed into his hand, his chest seeming to echo with the might of his cough alone. "If you want to abandon ship, this is your final chance."

"I am no stranger to raiding merchant vessels or military vessels Captain, if I wanted to quit being a pirate I would of quit long ago" said Jaz eyeing the Captain. If he wanted to psych her out he would have to try harder. Jaz Räu did not back down from adventure, she welcomed it. She would rid herself of this Captain, before he rid himself of her, she would make sure of it.
"Just because I am new to your crew, does not mean I am new to pirating".

She smirked and flashed him a grin. She more or less accepted this man's challenge to prove her worth.
"Is that all you needed from me Captain, to try and scare me into leaving?"

N'realo looked at her as she responded with the sharp retaliation of a thief being caught stealing a loaf of bread. It was obvious that was he was trying to convey with his proposal to leave her behind was not being absorbed. His dark grey brow furrowed as he looked down on her with eyes as cold as the iron cannons along side of his ship. "The safety of my ship and my crew are my prime concerns. If leaving one or two behind will mean the safety of the men and women who serve under my flag, then it will be done." He said nothing more, turning and walking down the deck again. The girl in blue watched him for a moment as he went to the cabin near the ship's helm and disappeared inside, closing the door behind him. The Novali male looked to the girl in blue, muttering something to her, in which she responded with a catty snicker before both party ways, the Novali heading to the door to the inner hull and the girl walking up the steps to the helm. It was the crack of dawn now, and the ship would be departing from the port in less than an hour.

Jaz had no snarky comeback to the captain as she did not want to get further on his bad side or the bad side of this crew. The captain didn't order her to do anything so she returned to leaning of the rail and mentally preparing herself for the raid. Jaz pulled out her two-shot pistol and began cleaning it, a habit she did before any planned encounter.

She sighed. Was it because of her height or her gender that people didn't think she was capable of being a pirate? She had scars on her back from what she assumed was pirating, but they had been there since she could remember. Still the captain, and then the catty snicker of the crew member fouled her mood.
At the very least the captain cared about her safety, it was an endearing thought, but still Jaz Räu could handle a merchant vessel raid. She returned to looking down at her gun. Maybe she would find a new crew after this raid, take her share and go back to Port and find another ship to work on, a ship that respected her, and would give her chance to prove her abilities without having to wait.

There was always the prospect of mutiny, but she needed the support of a good portion of the crew for that. And she was just the new short girl that they wanted to take aboard but yet leave behind.

Jaz shook her head and found a seat on a barrel so she could focus on cleaning her pistol.

Nothing eventful happened as the demoness cleaned her gun aside from some various crew mates walking over the deck and going to their respective posts. An hour passed and the captain walked from his cabin and to the helm where the girl in blue stood by the helm. His voice carried over the deck with some power as he spoke in his normal tone. "Helmsmen, heat the mast, spark the engines. We need to be at the rendezvous point at high noon." She nodded and went to the wheel. The captain turned and walked down the steps as the girl pulled a lever. A sound of a torch sparking on was heard overhead - a hot torch began to fill the tarp balloon with hot air for lift. In a matter of minutes, the balloon was full of air and the captain was at the point of the ship, his foot propped up on the bowsprit. The ship lifted out of the water it had been sitting in, parting from the wavy water port and becoming airborne.

It was a common thing at Port Havenedge for ships to land and take off, but the occasional child passing on land would stop and watch in innocent wonder at the ship lifting out of the water via it's massive balloon. After the ship was lifted quite a way out of the water, the four engines on the side of the ship's hull began to hum. The sound of gears churning in the innards of the ship at the engines began to hum. The four propellers, two on each side of the hull, began to spin. The children on shore ran off laughing at the loud spinning of the fan blades. The girl at the helm looked on and grinned before hitting another lever, increasing the throttle of the props. The ship began to move forward slowly through the air while rising up and away from the ground and sea water.

The captain seemed to smile while no one was looking, the first time a happy look crept onto the stern man's face since Jaz had been on the ship. Being a man of few words, it was pointless to ask him what was on his mind directly... the smile faded fast as soon he had turned and was walking back to his cabin once again, most likely to plot to course and work out a battle plan.

Jaz smiled as the ship lifted off. It was always her favorite part of being on a ship. It was amazing how all of it worked and what not. And how you could go from air to sea. Who knows maybe there were some ships that could on land, sea, and air.

Still she was new to this crew so she figured that she should go talk to some people and make some friends. It never hurt to make friends.

She peered around on the top deck. Everyone looked busy here, doing some sort of task but her. So she decided she would go below deck. Maybe find someone to get her the room too, she had not been assigned one since she was brought aboard from her old ship. None of the less that would get settled eventually. Jaz climbed down the hatch to the lower deck of the ship.

Once around she idly looked around hoping to run into someone to talk to or something. Someone not rude either. She didn't have time for assholes.

The inside of the ship was a little loud with the churning of gears in the engine room, but the ship was large enough and had enough walls to dull the sound in other parts of the ship. Pirates and sailors often got used to the sound anyway and some even came to love it. Just down the stairs of the deck was a main room with three corridors branching off of it. The main room acted as a sort of a lobby and dinning hall for the crew of nine, not including Jaz. There was a main table in the center with twelve chairs, a worn out sofa on the wall near the left corridor, a painting of a young man in a uniform, and a queer potted plant in a blue vase that was fasted to the floor. The corridor opposite the stairs had a sign next to it that read "Engine Room" and lead to a set of stairs that went deeper into the ship's bowels. The corridors went to the personnel quarters from when the ship used to be a military vessel. At the end of those halls were rooms that let out on both sides of the ship that housed the cannons, a total of four on each side. Naturally, the ship was well armed and capable of disabling or sinking other, lesser boats with relative ease.

There were two crew members in the lobby, a human in a black vest laying across the sofa with his feet up on the arm rest, his head on the other, and another male human sitting in the middle of the floor. The first wore a peaceful look on his gruff face, a smile of satisfaction as he lazed about - despite the fact the ship was about to raid a trade vessel. He was a strong build and sported a tattoo of a rather monstrous skull with a steak driven into it on his upper arm. The second man was shirtless, in loose fitting pants, and meditating in the middle of the floor, his eyes closed on his clean shaven face. He seemed to be completely in his zone, unaware of the world around him, and searching for his center. His chest was chiseled, lean, and sported a solid six pack of abs. He had a tattoo under his left eye, a blue like that ran down his face and onto his chest with branching designs out to his shoulders where the line ended in spiral.

Jaz wandered to the little sitting area. She had to admit this ship was rather impressive, the old ship she served on was a just a re-purposed merchant vessel. Not nearly as heavily armed as this one.
While she wasn't a fan that the Captain decided to baby her, she couldn't help but respect him for capturing this military vessel. Hell even if he did not capture it but merely was it's Captain when she was a military vessel and he just ran off with the ship.

Jaz was going to talk to the man on the couch as the other guy looked rather busy on the floor. But then she noticed the demon skull tattoo on him. Just looking at it filled her with ire. It took ever fiber of her being to not yell at her or shoot him with her pistol. But she just turned away and sat down next to the man on the floor. No need to associate with someone having a tattoo celebrating the death of one of your kind. Even if most humans hated her kind, still if you had a tattoo of it then well that meant you must be pretty hardcore about it or something.

"So what are you doing? If you don't mind me asking, it looks kinda cool and relaxing" said Jaz eyeing the man with a head tilted in curiosity. She hoped he wouldn't be pissed at her asking him a question. It was not like he had to answer or break his focus to talk to her. She wondered if the guy could even hear her. Jaz looked around cautiously and touched the man for an instant to see if he was breathing or something. He looked like he was made of stone or something, so it did not hurt to check to see if he was alive.

Not wanting to move from his comfort zone on the couch, the skull tattoo man didn't move an inch as Jaz walked into the room. He closed his eyes and yawned, looking very lazy for the given situation. Upon closer inspecting, from her new angle, it was visible to Jaz that the man wore an unfasten belt with a weapon dangling from it, a veritable 'hand cannon' if one had ever existed. The thick barrel and wooden handle made it look more like a shotgun to a typical human, but this man had is holstered up like a pistol ready to be fired on the drop of a hat. He was obviously much stronger than he looked, making her decision to swallow her rage look a lot more intelligent. The man was not moved as she talked on to ground as it seemed like he might even be dozing off.

The man on the floor seemed to not move as Jaz sat by him, even not answering right away. It wasn't until she was about to touch him that he made his first movement. Faster than even her demoness eyes could track, his hand went from its meditative state to a new location, his finger directly in the path of hers as she was about to poke him, stopping her finger's movement by gently pressing his fingertip to her own. He smiled and opened a whitish-blue eye slowly. "Hello, Jaz." He looked over to her. "I heard you come in, but I was trying to center my fourth chakra for the mission ahead." His voice was smooth, adult, but not gruff as a pirate's should be. He seemed to be a normal man on a ship, surrounded by pirates. "How can I help you, Miss Räu?"

Jaz jumped as the man stopped her from poking him. What? His eyes were closed how could of known?!
She couldn't help but giggle as he said her name, and blush. But how did he even know her name? At the very least this gentleman, and yes he seemed to be a gentleman aboard a pirate ship, was fairly good looking and seemed very nice from a glance. Jaz took another glance at him to confirm half of her presumption.

"Well you can help me by telling me your name stranger. You seem to already know my full name already, and well I think it would be nice to know what to call you besides stranger" said Jaz pondering the many questions she had for this strange but interesting fellow. "Oh oh and how do you know my name? And what is chakra?". It suddenly dawned on her that she might of interrupted something very important.
"I'm sorry I didn't interrupt anything important did I? I can wait for you to do whatever it was you were doing before I came in here." She lowered her head like a child who just got told by their parent that they were too busy to play right now.

Jaz crossed her legs and leaned forward intent to hear all of her answers from this strange gentleman.

The man smiled as he made eye contact with the woman. "It isn't often anyone asks about my ways..." He glanced over at the man lazing on the couch who seemed to be snoring at this point. He shook his head and then looked back to Jez. "My name is Kalir Mathias. And I know your name because, I pay attention. You've been on board for a good week now." He chuckled a little, his whitish eyes smiling a little. He put his hand back down on his lap, pressing his fingertips to his other palm and cupping the other to make a circle in front of his midsection. "Chakra is the energy flowing through one's body. It gives us life, emotions, power, presence in the cosmic plain. Our energy resonates in the collective consciousness of the universe, allowing every living being a link to one another." He closed his eyes again, though it was obvious she was still aware of her. "I was honing my emotions and energy for the raid ahead."

He looked like he was about to go on until a voice from across the room. "There's hardly enough room this ship for ten of us, Kal. I don't think there's enough room for your collective whatever as well." He chuckled a bit and shook his head, sitting up a little. He looked over with his deep green eyes at the other human with a cheeky gaze. "I don't think Conner would like having to cook for that many mouths." Kalir seemed amused by his blatant taunting of his faith and responded with a soft chuckle of his own. "The shallow cup is easy to fill." His short response made the gun-wielding man look at the other for a moment with an odd expression. "...What? I think that was an insult." He looked at Kalir for another few seconds and walked off down the right corridor. After he was out of earshot, Kalir opened one eye for a moment. "I guess he's smarter than he looks."

Jaz giggled at the banter between the crew members. Maybe this place would not be so bad after all.
"I guess he is smarter than he looks" said Jaz smiling. Still it made her happy that someone seemed to know her name and be aware of her existence for the week she had been on this ship/

Still she was a bit curious about this chakra stuff. Plus she just wanted to talk to Kalir more. Jaz removed herself from her sitting position and just lounged on her back on the floor. "So like do all races and animals and stuff have chakra? Could you teach me to use it?". However she was a bit nervous as her chakra might give away her true heritage. But still if it did she could play dumb and not lie that much because she didn't remember a long period of her life and she just woke up one day in this form. Still wouldn't he already know if all the races had different chakra?

She paused from her thoughts and asked one last question. "What is a guy like you doing with a bunch of pirates? No offense but you do not seem the type." She flashed a smile at him again.

Many parts of Jaz's inquires seemed to amuse the clam, shirtless man. Despite her curiosity, he was not bothered even a little bit by her questions - or at least he didn't seem to be. "Use? We all use our seven Chakras in order to live, love, and grow. Without them, we would be like rocks. All I can hope to do is make others more aware of this power, give them the ability to control and focus it, and better improve aspects of their lives." He cupped his hands together again and began to meditate once more. "Yes, all beings are filled with energy that is different from person to person, but the same on a universal scale. It's difficult to explain, but if you could feel it, you would understand." He hummed for a few seconds, his voice resonating in his nasal cavity. Afterwards, he took a breath and went on. "Humans, Aidian, Novali, Demons, and Dourian are all gifted with Chakra... it is the one other thing we share aside from living on the same planet."

After a few seconds more of meditating, he opened his eyes to answer the final part of her question. "The path of life is a winding path that intersects with the paths of others..." He left it at that, not delving deeper into the subject or letting her know more of its metaphorical meaning. Kalir had a reputation on the ship for being somewhat cryptic.

"Oh..." was all Jaz said. His answer to her question of why was he here was a bit over her head. So she decided to bring up chakra again. "So are you able to tell what something is based on their chakra, since it is all different?"

Jaz pondered a bit again. He probably already knew her true nature, but he just didn't care about it.
"So how long of you been trained in your little advanced knowledge of chakra?". Jaz nervously scooted closer over towards you. She had to admit you were rather good looking, and having your shirt off certainly wasn't helping your case. Would anything happen of it, probably not. It would take a lot more to earn a Demon's affection. All this was was a little crush really. A phase that would end shortly.

Kalir shook his head again. His voice carried a disappointed tone. "The problem with... the world is that people seem to think that their races matter to the universe. They don't. Not even a little bit." He looked right into Jaz's eyes as he went on, he noticed she had gotten closer, but his spacial awareness let him feel that she had gotten closer without even seeing her. "I can't tell a person's race because, to the universe, our race means nothing. When we die are are reborn, we can be born into any living form. The life energy of a tree it equal to that of a snail. The life of a snail is just as important as the life of a person... Do you understand now?" He smiled apologetically. "Sorry that I got serious there for a moment, but I think such racism is silly... I don't see the point of any of it."

He put a hand on his knee and stood up to his full height of six feet even. He ran a hand through his cut short light brown hair. He reached over to where a certain chair was near the table and pulled a shirt that was sitting on the back of the chair. He put it on, not buttoning the front, allowing for the core of his toned body to be seen by all. "Chakra is a part of my traditions that I've been following ever since I was a boy. I have been training physically in hopes of attain Nirvana my entire life... but peace of mind and being Awake is different for everyone." He looked down to Jaz and held out a hand to help her to her feet. "Anyone, regardless of age, rage, gender, or strength can attain awareness of Chakra."

"Wow....that was beautiful" said Jaz. She smiled and blushed grabbing his hand. She had to admit she was disappointed that he put his shirt back on but that was ok.
"Well I hope you find what you are looking for Kalir, I really do. Because you seem like a good person, and good people should get what they deserve". She looked up at him from her standing height of four feet eight inches. This guy had a good foot over her.

"I too believe that a race doesn't really matter. It is a person's actions that warrant how you should view them. Every race has it advantages, but in the end we are all the same, and we all will go out of this world the same. Dead. A little morbid but it is the truth, everyone, and everything is going to die. After that and I am not really sure what happens. Are you reborn like you say? Or do you simply cease to exist? Nobody really knows but the dead. And I don't intend to ask a dead man or to become a dead woman to find out". She smiled a grin and her bottom fang stuck out.

"Well maybe you can teach me some of that chakra stuff and it will calm my nerves before this raid. I'm no stranger to raiding, but this is the only chance aboard this ship I will have to make a name for myself and to make a good first impression. So I am a little nervous that I am going to mess it up" admitted Jaz. She fiddled with her hat out of embarrassment.

Kalir looked down at her as she grabbed his hand. He looked at her hand for a moment before pulling it away rather gently for as large and strong as he appeared to be. "Sorry. I don't really like to be touched... I know it's silly, but... yeah." He laughed nervously, still being very polite and friendly despite the trespass. "It's nothing personal, I promise." He looked at her for a moment, still smiling. After a pause he reached into his pocket. "I don't really have time to meditate with you right now. I've got a few duties I was putting off until now... if you hadn't woke me up from my trance, the captain would have given me an ear full for slacking on my duties... but I can give you this." He pulled a necklace from his pocket and held it in front of Jaz. The pendant was a wooden symbol that looked like a sheet folded over eight times. "It's a symbol of my faith. I've carried it around for so long that it's likely charged with some of my own Chakra... you can wear it on the raid for luck... just please try to return it to me. It may just be a material possession, but it reminds me of my family."

After giving her the pendant, he took a step back, put his right fist in his left palm, gave her a bow, and then tuned to leave through the opposite hall that the other man had gone down. There was no one else in the lobby for her to talk to, but there was still plenty of time before the interception of the merchant ship and plenty of time to unwind, steel one's mind, or whatever else people on this crazy ship did before battle.

"Wow thanks" said Jaz admiring the pendent. "And don't worry I will keep it nice and safe for you during the raid" said Jaz smiling. She wished she had her own lucky charm to give him, but her lucky sword broke during this ships raid of her ship. And she did not even get a chance to salvage any of it. She shrugged and watched Kalir walk off. She wasn't sure what to do before this raid, but she figured some alone time would be nice. Jaz didn't feel like searching again for someone to talk to and surprisingly she had no work. Not that she was complaining, just usually newbies got a lot of work.

Jaz walked through the corridors and retreated to her quarters. Shutting the door and locking it behind her. She didn't really want to be disturbed, but still someone could knock if they wanted to talk to her.
Jaz walked over to the porthole and placed Kalir's necklace on her neck to join her current necklace. Jaz fixed a few strands of pink hair and picked some off her clothing. Once grooming was taken care of she plomped down on the bed. Hearing the springs protest at the impact made her giggle. It wouldn't be wise to nap as she would probably oversleep. Even if her few minutes of idleness made her bored.

However there was only one thing to do. Let her mind wander as she waited. As well as try and mediate, even if she did not know how. The small demoness pirate crossed her legs and closed her eyes. And did her best to become one with the universe.

Being locked up in her room, away from everyone, made it hard for anyone to consider talking to her while there was work to be done in preparation for the raid on the trade ship. Jaz found it harder to attain the level of awareness that Kalir had told her about, but did find the act of meditation to be relaxing. Perhaps talk to the man later and getting more pointers on the subject would help with future attempts. As well as relaxing her mind and body, meditation also proved to be an expert time killer. In what seemed to be less than an hour later, a hum was heard over a horn in the top left corner of her less than decorated room. After a moment, the hum was replaced with the popping and cracking voice voice of a female.

"Attention, crew, this is your pilot speaking. Captain wants you all on deck now. Grab your gear, ropes, guns, swords, knives, and whatever else you've got. Conner, please leave the fish in the kitchen this time - captain's orders." The call was punctuated with a crackle and a click at the intercom system turned off. Outside Jaz's door, footsteps could be heard as well as a clanking of things being carried and hurriedly equipped. The propellers on the airship also stopped humming, causing the ship to be eerily quiet for the fist time since its flight from port.
