> Continuation of "Novali Nostalgia" The narrow path of the secret passage Regal had shown Atazos was long and dark, so dark in fact that it was hard even for him to see exactly where he walked. He did not know exactly for how long he had been walking, almost even crouching, through the roughly made path way. Luckily there was a light on the mask he was wearing that illuminated enought so he could at least see where he was stepping. It must have been about an hour, maybe two, before he reached a wall which could be opened by pulling a wooden lever. Creaking wood and screeching cogs could be heard as the wall in front of him opened up to reveal what he had been looking for. He had finally arrived in the mines south of the capital city. It was strange to think that an old horologist like him would have made a secret path all the way to his workshop and no one ever found out about it. Why he would do that was also a good question, had he been stealing ore from the empire in his younger days? Possible. The questions had to wait though because right now the main priority was to be quick, find what he came for and then leave where he came from. Atazos had appeared in a straight path of the mine, which meant he could either go to the left or the right. The light on his gasmask did not reach long enough to see what was at the end of either of the ways, so it did not matter much at this point. More notable what seemed to cause his otherwise good nightvision to not be so helpful was a strange gas that could be clearly seen wherever he moved the light. This must have obviously been the reason the old man gave him the gasmask to begin with. The lack of vision would mean he had to be very careful to watch his step. |

Treading carefully, keeping in mind the reduction in visibility and the tight path of the mine tunnels, Atazos comes to the fork in the path and groans. It was becoming quickly apparent to the sky pirate that this was not his typical battle field and that he should have brought someone along before heading down into the mines... never the less, he had gone so far that turning back would be quite the effort. Steeling his resolve, he looked at the fork ahead. After a short consideration, knowing it was up to the luck of the draw, he decided to take the left path. Atazos drew his sword, not sure what he would find down in the darkness, but any monsters he came across that could survive the poison miasma would probably be quite tough to fight. |

Atazos continued down the path into the unknown that lied ahead. The tunnel got bigger as he continued deeper into the dark fog covered caves, and soon he could move fairly well and had more than enough room to swing his sword efficiently enough. Of course his sight would make it harder to hit anything coming up towards him, but he clutched his sword tightly to at least be ready for anything trying to attack. After a bit of wandering down the path he found some mining equipment leaned up against the cave wall. Rusty pickaxes and dynamite that obviously had been laying there in the damp cave for far too long to be anything useful. Close to the equipment though, on the floor, a corpse of a Novali miner was resting silently. Luckily Atazos could not feel the smell thanks to the gasmask, else it was sure to make anyone throw up. The dead miner seemed to be carrying a map in his back pocket though, and who knew maybe there was other things he wouldn't be needing anymore. If nothing else at least the map would probably help him get done with the task quicker. |

His mind at slightly more ease finding that the tunnels were wide enough to fight in, Atazos still kept a keen mind about him as he stepped down the winding path, looking for the ore that he had came for. Sadly, he was seeing nothing that resembled it, but he did see a different familiar sight. Dead men were not a new thing to Atazos, but it was always sad to see a fellow Novali laying dead for no reason other than poor luck. Atazos knelt to his side, pulling the obvious map out of his pocket. As much as he was willing to mourn the loss of life here, he was also not above scouring the corpse for loot and supplies. Perhaps he might have a hunk of the ore on him, but Atazos was currently interested in finding some replacement filters for his gasmask should the one in his mask become wretched with poison gas and fail him at a very poor moment. With ease Atazos got a hold on the map sticking out of the stone cold Novali's pocket. With a quick look at it there was not really any way to decide where he was. However there were different symbols that seemed to be indicating different areas and sections of the mine. If the symbols where carved or visible somewhere in the mines to correspond with the map maybe Atazos could figure out where he was supposed to go. He put away the map again and decided to continue to search the body. From what he could gather there was not much of value on him, however deeper into one of the pockets of the corpse's clothes he could feel a cold metal against his fingers. A few gold coins, not much, probably just about ten of them at most. Money was money though. As Atazos pulled out his hand from the pocket something suddenly placed a firm grip around his arm. The cold pale hand of the dead Novali was now clutching hard around Atazos wrist. |

With the map in his pocket and his hands in the pockets of the body, he was not expecting the feeling of a cold pale hand grabbing his arm. Atazos recoiled, attempting to free his arm from the grip of the corpse. He was certain that nothing could live down in the cave with the poison gas about, but he was not ready to slash at something that looked to be a fellow Novali if it was, in fact, a survivor. Atazos put his blade at the ready, prepared to strike if the assailant turned out to be a hostile one. |

The cold grip around his wrist was tight but with a forceful pull Atazos managed to set his arm free. He fell backwards when the Novali suddenly lossened his grip. The Novali on the ground pulled himself up with a bit of trouble, but soon stood up infront of Atazos. It was now obvious that the miner was not alive even though he was standing there right in front of him. The lower jaw of the shambling horror in front of Atazos had seemingly been torn or beaten off of the body itself. Pieces of flesh were hanging loosely from the face and the black eyes had turned a greyish white in colour. The undead Novali slowly walked closer toward Atazos and reached out to grab him. (Short, but my brain is mush now :P) |

There was a lot of things Atazos was expecting down in the poisonous mines - vipers that had grown immune to the poison gas, ooze creatures, marauders in gas masks using the place as a haven - but this was not among his suspicions. Once freed from the creature's grip, Atazos could tell that the Novali was actually some sort of shambling corpse and did not seem ready to talk. The one upside, he imagined, was that the creature likely would not miss the gold that he had pilfered from its pockets. Sword already in hand and wits about him, the Sky Pirate took a step back and swung his sword at the walking abomination. |

With a well placed swing of his sword Atazos hit the walking corpse sideways over the stomach up to the chest area. The filthy miners outfit was torn by the cut as well as the Novali's stomach itself. A dark red, almost black, liquid gushed out of the deep wound together with some other insides that would have left most people ready to throw up. Worse though was that this did not make the dead person stop walking. It was like it had not even noticed or cared about the wound, it only continued to walk toward Atazos with a groan. The wound did however seem to make it harder for it to actually attack Atazos. As it tried to reach out for him and grab him it must have slipped on it's own insides, and it fell to the ground once again. It continued to try to grab violently after Atazos as it began to crawl on the ground instead of trying to get back on it's feet again. It left a dark streak of blood after itself as it crawled slowly toward the still breathing Novali. Spoiler: click to toggle

The fact that he had a gas mask helped keep Atazos from losing his lunch from the smell of the ooze coming from the aggravated looking wound. The sight alone was not enough to detour him as blood and fouler bodily fluids often spilled out of gut wounds of living soldiers as well. Not missing his chance to fell the creature that was attempting to do... whatever it was going to do to him, the Sky Pirate took another step back and made a leaping downward slash at the walking corpse, attempting to split the thing's skull. |

Leaping forward to the furious dead, Atazos stabbed it with through the head with the sword. The blade cleaved through the flesh, bone and the brain like it all was just butter. The sword stuck to the ground on the other side of the dead Novali's skull. It continued to move it's arms angerly trying to grab Atazos, but rather quickly it layed there on the ground not moving a inch. It was finally dead for real, the Novali would get the rest he had deserved, and for Atazos this meant he would hopefully get to see the light of day at least one more time. Now with the map in hand, a few more coins in the pocket and most of all newly found knowledge of the dangers that were waiting for him deeper in the caves of the mine there was no time to rest. Keeping an eye open for corpses would be a smart move, seeing as all of them weren't exactly kicking the can just yet. New Items Added

Atazos stood over the undead horror, his sword deep into the thing's head. He breathed heavily, his body raising and falling as he held the blade in it's head, not ready to unpin the creature until he had caught his breath and that he was completely sure that it was not going to move. Atazos had never encountered such a being in his life, but had heard tales and rumors of the dead walking, ships of ghostly creatures and demons... The sudden possibility of all the myths being true made his mind quake in fear. It was enough to make the most resolute of men look over his shoulder everywhere he went. The sky pirate pulled the sword out of the zombie's head and looked at the disgusting ooze on the blade. It would take a good washing to get all of the foul fluids off of it when he finally got out of the mines... but until then, he had to figure out where the ore was. Pulling out the map, Atazos began looking for a location where the ore might be located.. maybe some kind of excavation site. |

Atazos took a look on the map once he had settled down a bit from the sudden attack of the corpse. It was not exactly easy to decide where he was going or where he had come from by just looking at it, however he did see a potential place where the ore might be found. Down an elevator, deeper into the mines, there was a cave chamber on the map marked as 'main mining area'. That was all fine and good, but he still did not know how to get to the elevator that would take him down to the main mining floor. The map was marked with different symbols where the tunnels split up, with any luck the symbols would be visible on the walls in the cave system itself too. If that was the case he could possibly find the right way to the elevator if he only found one of the symbols so he could figure out where exactly he was on the map. If that meant walking into more of the undead horror's of the mine was still just as shrouded as the path in front of him. |

With a heavy sigh, he rolled up the map and put it away. Atazos pulled out his sword and walked down the path in front of him. He was not sure if the map would really help, but at least he knew that he had to find the old lift now. He was fine with that, but the walking dead, the poison gas, and the weird smell of the gas mask was starting to wear on his sanity. He tried not to think about the implications of anything he'd seen thus far as he kept an eye out for the elevator down. This time, his sword was ready and he was keeping an eye out for anything moving the fog in front of his and behind him. OOC

Atazos hurried onwards through the cave, keeping his eyes open for more of the miners who might have turned into undead creatures just like their friend that he just had ended up cutting with his blade. The poisonous fog seemed to be getting heavier as he continued walking, luckily the path was still reaching straight forward, and if the abominations came from anywhere it would be in front of him. Soon he reached a more open area. Thanks to the fog he could not see far enough into the cave to know if this was a dead end or not. However not far from where he stood he could see someone standing in the fog, and a bit further away he thought he could see someone else. Then again they were not people anymore, were they? There was no sense in asking them though, for all Atazos knew everyone in the mine had turned into these undead beings. The "people" did not seem to have noticed him yet though, and hopefully they wouldn't either. The gas made it difficult to see for them too, and perhaps it also made it hard for them to smell him too. If that was something they did of course. |

Instinctively, Atazos drew his breath in quietly and held it. He did not know what he had stumbled into, but from the looks of it, there were multiple monsters in the darkness ahead. Slowly, he stepped back, trying to stay quiet as he pulled the map out. Swearing obscenities in his mind, he was able to quietly pull out the paper with one hand. He looked to see if there was, from what he could tell, a way around the creatures. If there was, he was planning on going back and getting around them... but if not, he would have to fight them to get through. The danger, of course, was that one of them grabbing his mask and pulling it off for too long could result in him inhaling the poison and dying... or worse yet, suffering the same fate as the poor miners and becoming the walking dead. |

If Atazos was correctly reading the map the area he was standing in front of now was simply an open cave, no other way to get around the still unsuspecting dead. However there were two tunnels right next to each other in the end of the open area, one of which would lead him in the right direction. The left one to be precise would lead him closer to where the elevator was. This was of course if he was actually right about where he was on the map at the moment. Either way he memorized the symbols that were marked on the map, should he decide to walk into the area and spot them on his way. The symbol on the left tunnel was a X with a line straight through vertically. The corpses were still standing there, not moving an inch, so they definietly had not noticed him from where he was standing. There was a bit of a distance between the two horror's, so running passed them would be a possibility, granted that they were as slow as the last one he had encountered. Making up a strategy for what exactly to do was not the easiest task though, considering he had no idea if there were more of the shambling beasts waiting for him closer to the next tunnel. Or if there was another tunnel at all. |

Atazos did not feel confident in his map-reading all of a sudden. Even though he was sure that the end of the tunnel, passed the horrors, and to the left was the way onward. The fear of being caught and his mask pulled off was enough to make his spine crawl and to cause him to second-guess himself. With a deep a quiet breath he decided that the only way he was going to get through was to fight the creatures. Sword in hand, he closed his eyes and rolled up the map, muttering to himself softly. "Moira... You're lucky that you're cute." He gave another soft sigh and then began to sprint. He knew that he was not very fast or very stealthy, but took the chance to try and get a good hit on one of the creatures. Atazos ran into the mist, swinging his sword at the creature's neck as he ran by. His goal was to cause some sort of significant damage to one of the creatures as he passed by it and continue on towards the left path. OOC

Atazos sprinted out into the unknown in hope of getting passed the horror's without any problem. He swung his sword hard as he passed one of the two dead miners and managed to hit it i the back of the head before it even noticed him. The shambler tumbled over, but there was no time to check if it was actually dead or not. The other miner seemed to have noticed Atazos attack and was now slowly limping after him. Luckily they were slow. He continued to sprint. He had indeed read the map right, there in front of him was the exit to the left. Relieved he now knew where he actually was on the map, and now one step closer to his goal. However as he ran into the new path something stopped him. There were another three of the walking dead standing right in front of him, and there was no way to pass them without a fight. These looked a bit different though. They were wearing the uniforms of the imperial guard. If he did not work fast there might be a sky pirate among them as well. |

Having narrowly made it through the two lumbering corpses back in the cave, Atazos was feeling on edge and just glad to be past them. He didn't stop moving, holding his sword ready for whatever her came across. Sure enough, more of the walking dead blocked his way and this time it didn't look like he could run past them. He would have to fight. Three against one were odds he didn't like, but he had no choice. Not taking much time to think or plan out his actions, Atazos kept running, using his momentum to try and strike true on the closest of the undead creatures. |
