A beautiful battle is one you don't have to fight.
In a small town, a few miles from Asharei City, Jacob was sitting in his modest home. Although five years of cold dungeons had offered him a great resistance against Revlik Isle's weather, he still had a fire blazing in the fireplace. Over the fire, there was a simple iron pot with broth. A man had to eat, after all. There wasn't much to do out here. He knew he was still being watched by the Empire, he always was and frankly, he could care less. They had all the right to mistrust him. He had betrayed his own kind for three years straight and sent the information to the Empire. It's not like he had exactly been showing himself to be an honorable man.

He ran a finger past the bookcase next to his seat. There were many books there, most on legends, lore and history of the Empire. He picked out a book that was rather basic, and that he had read before, but hey, practice makes perfect. Jacob had been studying up on the Empire's history again, something which he had always been most intrigued by. It was part of the reason he, in the end, actually decided to obey the Novali by free will, rather than as a last-minute plea to save his life. He opened the book on the page where he had left and stared to read.

In truth, he was waiting for a job offer to come. He had gone more into the private sector the last year or so, mercenary work and that. However, it might as well be the Imperial Guard busting into his room next to command him to work for them like they so often did. Either way, Jacob would be more than happy to.

As the human was sitting there in his lonliness suddenly there was a knock on his door. Three hard knocks and the slience again. As Jacob went up to open the door another three knocks hit the wooden door.

He opened it up and outside in the snowstorm was a Novali clothed in a black uniform. He had his gray hair combed back and a devious smile grew on his face. Jacob recognized him as general Nherus of the imperial guard, someone he had the pleasure, or displeasure, to meet before. "Good day to you, Jacob, I assume you don't mind me stepping inside" he said and entered with his dirty, wet boots before the human even got an answer. He sat down by a table in the room and tapped it with his gloved hands. "How about you bring us something to drink and then join me here, Jacob?" there was not much use to argue with a general of the imperial guard, and he could just assume that there was something the Novali wanted to him if he even took the time to go out into nowhere like this.

A split second after the knocks, Jacob was out of his seat and on his way to the door. Three more knocks, and Jacob opened the door. There was a fairly familiar face there, one of the generals of the Imperial Guard and thus a man who had been his superior for a good five years, eight if you counted the years he served as a spy. He wasn't all that pleasant a person, but a lot more was required to frustrate a guy as stoic as Jacob. He took anything the Novali threw at him without a hassle. It was this or getting murdered by his kinsmen back home.

"Not at all, sir." Jacob answered calmly as the general entered his home. Nherus asked for a drink, and Jacob walked over to the door that lead to a small sub-basement where he kept his food stored cold. He poked his head out of the doorway and asked: "What can I get you, sir?" After Nherus would answer, Jacob would get the general a bottle of whatever he asked for, then pour a cup for him. "There's broth heating over the fire, sir. Would you want a bowl when it's done?" he asked politely, like he always did.

"I am not picky, my friend. Bring me whatever it is you have... even though that is probably not much." he said from where he was sitting. He laughed at his own smug remark as he waited for Jacob to come back with his drink.

He looked over to the fireplace and the pot with broth as the human mentioned it. The Novali general wrinkled his nose a bit over the mere suggestion that he would eat something like that. He cleared his throat a bit "That will be quite alright, I have already eaten recently. But you can go ahead." the general said and leaned backwards in his seat, waiting for Jacob to return with his drink instead.
