I am not squeamish about breast feeding. It is a natural beautiful healthy thing.

There was a story about a woman who breast fed her baby at her son's middle school. She was breast feeding her baby at the lunch table in front of all her son's friends. That is not right to me. Not in a school atmosphere around a bunch of middle school kids. I think in the story the school administrator had a problem with it, which he should have, and the woman got upset. I think she was just pulling a stunt and looking for attention.

Just think about that kid now, he will go through a lot of mocking and bullying all because of his mothers bad decision to breast feed in front of his classmates.

I don't have any problem with public breast feeding, just not on school grounds in front of a bunch of pre teen kids.

I didn't read the article that you posted, but I just wanted to comment on breast feeding in general.

In some cultures that wouldn't have mattered. In this culture it does and that's the issue and the point of the entire normalizing breast feeding movement.

If kids were used to seeing breasts in a less sexualized manner (they watch T.V. and see Victoria's Secret signs at the mall all the time for examples and nobody covers their eyes and freaks out) then they wouldn't have had an issue with the mom at the lunch table at all. If they were used to seeing women nursing then it would be normal. That's the point of the normalizing breast feeding movement. No, not all of us could cover up due to other issues like trouble with latching on or semi-inverted nipples. I sure as hell wasn't going to miss out on nursing on account of those things so I endured the dirty looks (from other women to) the same way I endured the leers from men and dirty looks from other women for having a nice rack before I became a mother to.

When a baby is hungry its hungry and it sounds to me like a huge issue was made of it where it should not have been. Its called "hyper-sexualizing" and is a big reason women get treated differently in employment (pay, opportunities, etc.).

You do have a point though, its not normal yet and the kids in this culture are likely not mature enough to handle that. I know the Principal has to do what they deem best for the kids.... I'm just trying to say that if it were normal then there wouldn't be an issue, like drinking beer all their lives in Germany.

You do make a good point about it not being normal in our culture, especially for kids to see. And the Victoria Secrets thing, and everything on TV, magazines .............etc, being sexualized. I didn't think about that. On tv they always say PG 13 for a lot of shows, but they show a lot of racy, sexual things anyway. They do that on purpose. Even in some cartoons, they hide secret sexual messages, which is pretty messed up.

What surprised me in your story, that women would give you dirty looks. I would think that if anybody, women would be supportive of other women breast feeding wherever and whenever the baby is hungry and needs feeding. But then again, I have heard a few stories on a local radio show of some women telling stories a little bit similar to yours. But to hear it first hand from you, that is a shame that you saw the evil looks from some women. It is also a shame, but not surprising, that some men looked at you with creepy leers. But there are always some creeps out there.

You're super understanding Homer.
Thinking about it, I don't think middle school lunchrooms are where to start the nurse ins. Unless she was so in the nursing groove she didn't think of it at all. That's the only thing that I can think of that could make it okay until the rest of our culture catches up.

I am open minded, and if somebody makes a good point and shows me a view on something from a different angle that I didn't think about, I appreciate that. So, thank you for that Luna.

I never have a problem saying that I didn't think of that, or if I am wrong on something, I never have a problem saying I am wrong either.

I know what you mean, the woman may have been in such a groove with nursing, and never gave it a second thought. Another good point Luna.

On the other hand, being that our culture is behind, she also could be sort of an exhibitionist in a weird way and wanted the kids to be oogling over her. I only say that, because there are so many stories now a days, of female teachers getting caught having sex with young students in school. It seems to be happening more and more. I know the woman was not a teacher, she was just visiting her son, but I just put the teacher thing as an example of women having sex with young kids, age 13 and 14 years old. Just a thought and a possibility.

More or new information always helps me.

I don't know which it is with her either. I suppose someone should have to find out before making a huge deal out of it. If she was wanting attention they sure gave it to her.
