Gray whale photographed off Namibia is first-ever documentation of species in Southern Hemisphere Lost and lonely whale could have entered Atlantic via Northwest Passage due to lack of sea ice which normally blocks it. Whales on the North American west coast are normally separated from the North Atlantic by the polar cap (Northwest passage frozen over). Thats the theory that seems to make the most sense out of the available possiblities, imo. The only other Gray Whale spotted in the Atlantic in modern times was in 2010 off of Spain and Israel. From photographic comparison they are certain these are not the same whale. The area has no Gray Whale fossiles either. |
