Bailey, is same sex aggression a thing with Newfs? My newf person was my NW instructor the other night and I got to meet both her dogs. I noted that one was a male and the other female, so i wondered. SSA is a thing in my breed, which is why I won’t bring in a female resident or foster, but I don’t know about others.

Keep the rescue in your back pocket in case you need to use them. My contact was stressing the other night that they have the resources to carefully evaluate and place her. This is data: Rosie was stressed and in a new environment and she got protective of food. They may want to place her in an only dog home.

Well shit.

It was probably the stress of all the change. I have everything crossed that Rosie settles in and there are no more problems.

It was a male neutered Newf, so I think it was simply a food issue.
I haven't heard anything in over 24 hours, so that's a good sign.
Crossing my fingers it stays that way.

And I haven't heard anything regarding my kitty. I check the humane society's website daily and there hasn't been any mention of her. They post available pets as well as pets who have found their forever home. I'm compartmentalizing until I hear more since the thought of her in a cage is killing me. I'll update when/if I hear an update.

Thanks for the words of encouragement during all of this. This is one of those shitty times in life where some people will judge you no matter how much you've analyzed the situation. I appreciate that those thoughts haven't been shared here. ❤️

(((((Bailey))))) I feel for you. This is so hard. I get it. I had to surrender my beloved cats of 7 years to a shelter, while bawling and dealing with a 6 week old cuz my marriage fell apart and my dickface ex was not going to feed them and I couldn’t take them with me. All that to say, i understand the life upheaval and how heartbreaking it is. But you are doing the right thing and you will get through this. It gets easier over time. It been 7 years since that day and I now have a sweet kitty that is such an integral part of our little loving family. You will arrive to a new calmer normal eventually. (((((Hugs))))) You are doing great at navigating all of this.

Hugs, Bailey. The food thing may have been a one time issue. For example, if someone was pouring my chocolate stash into another container, I'd get testy until I figured out whaat was going on. :D
As for kitty, they probably have to assess her before offering her for adoption.

You did a hard thing, I am proud of you. Just don't try and steal my chocolate stash!

Bailey - animals are scared in new circumstances. I bet the dog will be just fine. Glad Rosie is getting a second chance!

I hope I didn’t cause any upset or offense asking about the kitty. I heartily believe you are doing what’s best for your pets even though it hurts you.

Are they willing to work with her? I can't imagine this being a seamless transition and some behavioral issues are bound to come up. Has she been in a house with another dog before?

Yes, we had an English Mastiff for a while and they got along really well. They were even fed together. She’s been around other dogs a lot, so i don’t get it. It must be the stress.

There’s nothing I can do until Friday, so they’re going to have to make it work until then. She said she’s willing to work with the situation, but she can’t put her dog at risk.

She said she would help me find another home for Rosie.

It’s stressing me out knowing how upset Rosie must be to act like this. And bringing her back to my home only to go to another home seems so cruel. But I can’t keep her. But maybe I just need to make it work. I don’t know.

Has Rosie been through any formal training? Are they willing to put her through some additional training?

I agree that it seems like she'd be even more stressed being moved back into your home, but I understand that you might not have another option.
I'm sorry you are having to do this, it's a really tough position to be in.

Would they consider keeping Rosie in an X-pen for now? My sister fosters (and keeps) greyhounds who are traumatized from the tracks and they find that for at least two weeks the dogs do better in an x-pen because it's their own space, they can interact without hurting each other and eventually they are able to get along outside of that space. A few days really isn't enough to see how they will do long term.

I know you aren't in total control of this situation, but maybe you can offer some suggestions to the new owners?

This is good information to have. Thank you.
I don't know that I feel comfortable offering advice. Does anyone have an opinion on that? Would it be considered rude in this situation?

I don't think it would hurt to say that someone you know wondered what they thought of this idea. Then present it and let them decide

I don't think it's rude to make suggestions, as long as you phrase them as suggestions. They obviously want you to be involved if they call you when something happens, so part of that is hearing your advice.

Two week shut down? I’m kind of surprised that former breeders wouldn’t be familiar but that’s really, really good advice.

That is great advice, DD. Bailey, since you aren't going to be able to go back until Friday, you could suggest this method without sounding pushy. Like LW said, say a friend gave you this suggestion.

I haven't been around lots of Newfies since the 1980's. I never knew one that had any agression issues, is that common in Newfies now?

Update:
My kitty has been adopted! I just saw an update on the humane society’s Facebook page. I hope that she’s getting lots of extra love and snuggles now.
I don’t have an update on Rosie. I should probably text and find out if she found another home to live, or if they somehow made it work.

But at least Hazel has a home. 💗

This prompted me to reach out to the people who have Rosie. She is doing well and seems to be happy. They are keeping the two dogs separated for now and are hoping to make it work.

That's awesome! I was more concerned about the cat vs. the dog as far as being able to find them homes. So happy that it seems to have worked out.
