Anyone plan on watching it? I've mixed emotions but I'm going to watch, it was a formative part of my youth. GaySis took me to see it (the original movie, not the live musical) and it was really impactful on me.

I'm not at all thrilled with John Legend as Jesus. Honestly I find him boring, and IMO he is too old/too clean cut looking for the role.

I'm going to watch it! I saw it on stage a million years ago and was so impressed. It's got such great music.

The Ten Commandments tonight, Jesus Christ Superstar tomorrow.

No don't plan on watching but you did give me a flashback. Many, many years ago I went to see a live version at an outdoor theater here and the star...David Cassidy.

I'm planning to watch, either live or on demand. Remember, this is the concert version, so powerful singing trumps acting/appearance. And it's kinda nice when your lead is an Emmy away from being an EGOT.

As much as I love musicals i never got into this one. The music doesn't speak to me and I don't love the story from either a religious perspective or even just for enjoyment. I'm still curious how this one does though.

There was a period when whatever city my BFF and I visited (NY, Toronto, Chicago, plus maybe more), Donnie Osmond was there doing Joseph and his boring coat.

It's a huge part of why I rejected Christianity. As a kid it made me SO angry at how a god could destroy Judas just so Jesus could be martyred and fulfill that need.

You people and your quaint little categories.
I'm planning to watch just to see Alice Cooper as King Herod.

Well, now I’m considering watching. I’ll probably forget but this intrigues me.

+1

I love the way JC superstar highlights the political situation and the realities of being under occupation. One of the many things that makes it a unique telling of the story.

We will be watching both. Even though we own the Ten Commandments on blueray, I love watching it on tv. Reminds me of being a child because back then I would fall asleep before it ended as it was such a long movie.

I love the music from Jesus Christ Superstar. For that reason alone, it's set to tape just in case I don't get to watch it while it's on.

I'm looking forward to it. I saw it on stage 3-4 years ago, and Ted Neely (from the movie) played Jesus. It didn't really work that he was about 65 and still playing someone in his early thirties, not to mention that his voice wasn't really up to it anymore. It was still fun, and JC Superstar is still one of my favorite movies. I'm not religious at all, by the way.

King Herod's song is the best! I'm looking forward to Alice Cooper's interpretation as well.

I dug out my CD of Jesus Christ Superstar and listened to it tonight. Had it playing while I was watching Kansas and Villanova. Trust me; the CD was better than the game. I realized that the reason I liked it so well when I was young was because Jesus was like, "Yo, dad, you really want me to die for these dicks?" and Judas's realization that God had played his (Judas's) role as the disciple's treasurer and wish to help the poor into a total betrayal. His words, "You have murdered me," struck a chord in a high schooler's life.

While I was at it I just checked the videos for Godspell. I went to my college production of Godspell and the final scene was the cast members taking down Christ from a chain link fence (where he had been crucified) and hoisting him on their shoulders and then singing "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord" as they carried him through the crowd down one of the aisles. Didn't realize that this was the director's interpretation and not from the movie but I DO remember bawling my eyes out as Christ was carried out. I knew most of the cast and they were a bunch of stoners but DAMN did they move me.

DH and I saw a live performance a couple of years ago. Big production, in one of the big theaters. It was done very well.

Then, during the crucifixion scene, a toddler started to cry. Pissed me off!

About the only time I have ever written a complaint letter. The kid should not have been let in and the person that got back to me said that an usher messed up and they would be reminded of the age rules.

Jeez. I was 8 the first time I saw the movie, the whipping scene and the crucifixion made me cry. I can't imagine seeing that as a toddler!

I loved this musical! I just downloaded the Ted Neely movie version now, thanks to this thread.

When our first baby was born we’d just seen a live production of it. I sat in the back of the car next to Baby DS, he was crying a bit, and I couldn’t for the life of me bring a single lullaby to mind. I ended up singing Everything’s Alright.

The original is on StarzEncore right now. If I'd known it sooner, I'd have recorded it but it's almost over now.
