Do people assume you collect, making you collect something against your will?

Yup-

I have a couple of plastic flamingos in my flower garden. I also have a pink Christmas tree with flamingos on it that I put up every year. I like the color pink. After having seen both, one of my friends now insists on buying every flamingo item she sees, and gives it to me for my birthday or Christmas. I liked the pink Tervis cup, but the shirt, socks, cup holder, towels, etc. no. Just no. Now it's bled over to DH-she actually gave him a flamingo t-shirt. That ended up in the donation bag-quickly.

For the record, he hates my plastic flamingos in the yard (he thinks they are tacky) which they are, but it's a grandpa Sicilian thing, and they get little outfits for Summer, Halloween and Winter. :P

I have nothing flamingo in my house outside of the countertop tree at Christmas time. I've told friend to please stop, but she keeps doing it.

No. We had so little money when the kids were growing up we were thrilled to put a few bucks away for retirement a week! It probably looked like we were collecting shoes, though, they grew out of them so quickly! :P My kids wish I collected because they say it's hard for them to buy for me.

I used to collect rabbit figurines. It started as kind of an accident. My birthday is in March - close to Easter, lots of rabbits in the stores. One year, my sister took my 3year-old nephew/godson shopping and he picked a little stuffed rabbit for my birthday. I put it on my mantle. Then for Easter, he picked a ceramic figurine. It went in the mantle, too.
Thus a collection was born.
People who saw them, thought I collected them. Soon, they were everywhere in my house. I also ran with it.

I told my family that I wanted to start a new collection- of diamonds. No one took me up on that. :D

I like collecting rocks and my son is good about providing excellent specimens. I'm not sure how my in-laws thought that I was into dragons, but for the last 32 years I've accumulated a most impressive if not kitschy collection of dragon artifacts courtesy of them. I think there are enough of them to put on display for an exhibit now. Anybody want 'em? Will ship, for free.

I early on established with my kids that I collected pens and coffee mugs, Both things I could use that were plentiful but would also get used up or break. I do love a good cup that will fit in my car cup holder and of course go through pens like crazy. At one point it did get a little out of hand and customers would bring them to me so I toned down the crazy pens when I switched restaurants.

I used to collect action figures awhile back and have a large collection of 1/6-scale (11-12 inch) action figures. The majority are still in their original boxes, but I do have some on display. They are all articulated and very poseable. They are mostly male, but I have a few female action figures as well. I did not collect in any other scale.

My figures come from a variety of companies, Blue Box/bbi, World Peacekeepers, Character Options, Hasbro, Sideshow, Hot Toys, Dragon, Power Team Elite, and Soldiers of the World, to name some.

I also collect Doctor Who memorabilia, but not very often.

My collecting days are pretty much done. I am looking into selling a number of my 1/6-scale figures in the near future.

I still have my Breyer horse collection in the attic.
My FIL's wife once gave me an angel figurine. It was holding a bird and I had it sitting in the window. Then some of the daycare moms thought I collected angels and I got a couple from them, too. I don't really care all that much for angels. They are okay, but not really my thing. I wasn't too broken up about the angel when it got knocked out of the window and shattered.

I don't really collect anything. I don't love the clutter, and we have minimal storage space. DH collects certain star wars things. Those funko pop characters, Lego scenes, the characters made of Lego, t-shirts... at least he's easy to buy for.

ETA: I take that back, I collect bandana style headbands. I have at least 8 in different color schemes. They're great for days that I don't get a shower. :$

I have a funny (to me) story about collecting! For some reason, my MIL thinks my SIL (married in to the family) loves owls. (SIL doesn't love or hate owls, she is owl-neutral) Maybe she wore an owl necklace once or something. So she starts buying her owl-related objects for every holiday. I, of course, think this is hilarious and so I start encouraging it. If I see an owl item when I'm with MIL, I would say "oh, don't you think that SIL would love that?" "I bet SIL is jealous of your owl wind chimes!" and so on. I even started buying SIL owl stuff as a joke for xmas and her birthday. I may be a terrible person, lol.

I don't purposely collect anything, and the only thing I have a 'collection' of that others may buy for is jewelry, but I have quite a number of collections.

Jewelry - the real stuff
Jewelry - the fun stuff, but when my mother (she's the only one who tries) tries to add to it, it's generally not anywhere in line with what I'm looking for
Cookbooks - I like to choose these. People don't really buy them for me
Shoes

I really need to purge more. I've been doing it, but it's slow going, because I don't really have the time to get to it like I need to.

Haha, oh, yeah! I left those out!

To be fair, I also left out clothes, and I kind of consider the scarves like clothes, but I guess they're really more along the lines of shoes. And fun jewelry.

I collect jewelry too, mostly vintage stuff, and anything sparkly, really. I don't mind too much when people buy it for me but most people know that I also make it so they don't bother. I do free repairs for friends and family and all that I ask is that they think of me if they want to get rid of jewelry, many have actually done this. I take it all apart and use the parts to make new stuff. I have a friend right now that "has a bag for me" and I cannot wait to see her!

I collect rocks too and might eventually use them in jewelry making. I haven't decided if I want to go down that road, it involves grinding and polishing and I am not sure if I want to do that. Until I decide, most of them go outside so they don't take up too much room.

I used to be a serial collector, would collect something, get bored with it, and then give it away or sell it and start collecting something else. I have stopped doing that for the most part and am just sticking with jewelry and rocks.

I collect vinyl. I'm fussy with what I add. The only people who have bought any for me are my brother in law and husband, and I assume BIL was given some ideas from DH, because he got it pretty right.

Went through a little stage where DD7 was in charge of choosing vinyl for me for gift giving occasions. Like her mama, she loves the Beatles. I had to nicely tell DH that I couldn't handle another Beatles compilation record, and that I now had no reason to get the Studio albums I actually really wanted in my collection, because I had every song across all the compilations. Vinyl's a bit expensive around these parts, so I do pace it out, and would avoid purchasing an album I wanted because I knew Christmas/my birthday/whatever was coming, only to receive another album with Yellow Submarine on it. I felt like a total bitch, but it was starting to feel more like they were an opportunity to please DD than an actual gift for me, and that kind of sucked. Luckily, I had that conversation after he had bought me a compilation I already owned (and he was already annoyed with himself over that), so it was well received.

I might have a small collection of Pioneer Woman items. I have all her cookbooks, plus a few childrens books and her book about meeting her dh. I have a few of her kitchen items as well. I have bought items she has recommended. I might be slightly obsessed. I also tape her show on food network and follow her website and Facebook.

Growing up, I received a porcelain doll every Christmas. With my mom's blessing, I sold all of them a few years ago except two. The one from my first Christmas and my favorite one. I also have a mint condition collection of baseball cards from 1992 that my dad put together and gave to me.

I like collecting x-stitch, knitting and crochet patterns. It started with my grandmother’s stash of turn-of-the century patterns and grew from there.

No one gives me any new stuff but if they find something from the early 1900’s up to prewar (WWII) it finds its way to me.

I collect black cats. I'm particular about what I collect. I usually display those during Halloween. I have a collection of Hershey's tins/mugs/Christmas decorations. I display them in February for Valentine's day. I like the Minions and friends have been giving me Minion stuff. I have all of that in a container at school. I've edited my Christmas decorations down to just snowmen and most of them go on the tree.

None of these collections are huge. They fit on a four foot shelf in my living room. With the Tiny Terror around I won't be displaying this stuff for a while.

I collect Cinderella memorabilia. I have loved Cinderella since I was very little. Luckily, my friends and family are selective about what they will gift me. One friend had the 1987 Cinderella postage stamp mint matted and framed for me, that was awesome. And since I'm a runner, my mom found this awesome mash up that has a picture of the pillow her glass slipper was on, but instead of a glass slipper, it has a running shoe on it. Also I have some unique Cinderella dolls that people have found, not your normal dolls you would find in any toy store.

I also collect vases. I love unusually shaped vases and especially colored ones. I have blue, pink, purple, in all kinds of shapes and sizes. I consider them art.
