Portable music storage/player for travel- recommendations?

It looks like I'm going to have to start traveling for work again soon. Of course the first thing that popped into my head at the travel meeting was how do I take my music with me? Because that's the most important thing, right? ;)

I used to have an old fashioned Ipod touch. Remember when those were popular? Of course this was 10 years ago and while my Ipod still technically works, its been bricked by good ol' Apple so it will not update and I cannot add anything new to it. Bummer, I loved that thing.

I haven't had to travel in awhile so making my music portable, or storing it at all, hasn't been an issue. I listen to the majority of my stuff on my work computer or thru apps on our smart tv. I use Youtube, Sirius and other streaming services (Pandora, Spotify, etc). I pay monthly for 4 different music streaming services which is great but this doesn't help me in a plane. Yes I can always pay for wi-fi. But the last flight I took, the wi-fi wasn't working the entire flight. And the flight before that, anything I tried streaming came in so choppy and garbled. I have to have my music on a plane. I will lose my mind. So having the actual music downloaded to a device is preferred. What's the smartest way to do this, short of physically looking up and buying every individual track I want?

I also want to store my music on some portable device that's not my phone. I will need my phone for work so using it for music doesn't seem like the best idea. Plus the last time I stored music on my phone years ago, I maxed out my SD card and phone's storage capacity and my phone ran like garbage. So no, I want something separate for music and music only that I can take around with me and use in a plane/on the road. It would be really cool if this device has bluetooth or something in it so it can connect to my car or speaker at home. And I'm not interested in another Apple device. I want something I can use as long as possible. Does such a thing exist? I'm not the most tech savvy person and I'm not a great researcher. I'm an impulse buyer. But since I'm looking for something specific, I figured I'd ask around and see what people recommend.

I'll tell you what DH does. He downloads a crapton of music from Spotify onto his phone. You don't have to be connected to Spotify to listen (but you do if you want to add more music). Having it on the phone isn't an issue if you have plenty of storage. Smartphones are just pocket computers. Not saying you have to use a your phone, but I wouldn't discount it as an option because of something that happened years ago and however many phones ago.

As for not-picking-every-song-individually: buy something that can support Pandora's app, and then pay for Pandora Premium. It will download a set amount of songs (you decide) to your music player, based on whatever station(s) you choose. Then you don't have to use wifi.

Question, because Spotify isn't one of the services I pay for so I don't know how the paid version works. Can you download individual songs from Spotify or do you have to download entire playlists? And can you skip as many songs as you want in a row or do they still put a cap on it like with the free version?

LOL, DD10 is totally into old media music. Santa brought her a Walkman for all of the tapes she's acquired from me and my friends.

You can download individual songs or playlists, whatever's easiest. You can skip as many songs in a row as you want, and skip backwards to repeat a song as well as skip forward.

So your I Pod doesn't work at all? DH has an older one and I can still download music on it. You can (I think) still get non-Apple music players. You can put music on a Kindle if you have one.

Apple does still sell iPods if you want a dedicated music player. But your phone should work fine.

It still works and still holds a charge. But when I plug it into my computer to put music on it, it fights me and says it needs an update. It will start taking me thru the steps to update but I reach a certain point and all the buttons are grayed out and I get an error message. I took it to Best Buy a year ago to see what the deal was and they said Apple no longer supports the device. My Ipod was one of the first versions of the Touch. I guess once they reached a certain point, they are no longer capable of being updated. Except in order to proceed with adding music and connecting to Itunes, you need an updated device. So disappointing. The device itself was really well made and still works except I can't ever put new music on it again. That really turned me off of Apple products entirely. I buy things for the long haul.

DH seems to think there's a way to "hack" it or something so I can put new music on it but it's messy and time consuming and I said no thanks.

1) Buy a new iPod

2) Buy a larger SD card and just use your phone. SD cards are cheap. I have a 128 gig (the largest my old ass phone will support) that was only $40. Probably cheaper now.

3) Jailbreak the current iPod so that you can flash an update to it (this is assuming you know someone who can do it).

4) Get a Kindle Fire (or other tablet). Bonus is that it is very useful for other stuff besides music. This One is only $55 and you can use an SD card to expand storage up to 256 gig.

Personally I would go with Option 4. I actually do have all of my music on my phone, but the battery life sucks compared to a tablet so I only use that in places where it is easy to charge my phone (ie: my car or office).
