Responsbility at its Finest
|
I'm at a loss for what to do with my Girl Scouts for an end-of-the-year-party type thing. In the past, we've gone bowling, done an escape room, and had a sleep-over at my house. I feel like I'm just out of ideas and they are not helping me at all. Thoughts and/or ideas of what to do with six 8th grade girls for a fun night? We live in WI, so I'm looking for indoor ideas since early May is still unpredictable. |

I was going to answer, "8th grade boys," but I figured that would be frowned upon. Are there any IMAX theaters near you? |

Reading fail. I didn't see the part about indoors. You can still do a scavenger hunt. My DD's friend had one for her birthday party at the local mall. They didn't buy anything, they just had to take photos of themselves with the item on the list that they had found. Things like: an orange sign, a two for one sale, pink shoes, a giant floppy hat, and so on. They had an absolute blast. They were divided up into a few groups (this was for the entire class of 25 girls), each with an adult chaperone, and the mom quickly compiled the photos for each group into a video, which they watched back at her house. for the number of kids you have, you can divide up into two or three groups, keeping the number of adults you need to a minimum. |

Trampoline park. Are there any museums near you that do overnights? My son's Cub Scout troop did a sleepover at a local children's/nature museum last month and it was A HUGE hit. |

Is there a nearby hotel with nice amenities that would also be affordable for a sleepover? Pool, hot tub, order pizza to the room, etc. |

I work with 11th grade students (so a bit older) but they LOVE the trampoline park. Just be sure you get all the Liability forms signed. My local trampoline park does a group discount. It ends up being about $10 per student for 90 minutes (or maybe it's 2 hours) of jump time. They are pretty exhausted by then, even at 90 minutes. |

There is a Korean spa near me that is also a hostel, you could try to look around if there is anything like that near you. You can repeat, are there any new escape rooms? Is there a Dave and Busters type place by you? they can be teen/tween friendly for lunch. |

At that age, I was starting to show interest in formal events. I was so excited when my friend's parents rented us a limo for her birthday. I think we only went to a local restaurant and Blockbuster (it was also a sleepover so we stopped to get movies) but I had the time of my life being in the back of a limo with my good friends. |

Make-over night? Sundae bar? Museum/zoo experiences are awesome. I would have suggested camp-out but Wisconsin. Maybe an indoor camp-out? Art experience? (not paint and wine, but something similar?) |

The teens at my library are about that age, and they love a candy sushi bar. Make Rice Krispies treats in a shallow jellyroll pan and buy an assortment of gummy candy: Sweedish fish, twizzlers, starburst, whatever. And some colored sugar, jimmies, etc. like you'd use to decorate cakes or cookies, and put different colors of jelly in ketchup squeeze bottles. Let each girl concoct her own specialty roll and cut it into as many pieces as there are girls. They can plate them as fancy as they would like, photograph them, name them, and then, at the end, sample them. |

Since this is Girl Scouts, the girls are supposed to take the lead in planning activities, inviting the adult leaders to help. You could combine reminding them of that, with the Mom-tested "If you don't have anything to do, I'll soon find you something". If they don't come up with something aligned with Girl Scout values and celebratory/end-of-year-ish they can do some weeding. Something historical? Dress up as Juliette Gordon Low and her first troop, play the games they did, make campfire food indoors? |

I was thinking something like this too. Many 8th grade girls want "grown up " events ( that's the age right before High School so they think they know it all). My city also had an under 18 dance club my nieces really liked. They felt so grown up when they were finally able to attend ( they had to be 15 ). An escape room might be a fun option (especially if it's easy enough for them to solve on their own). Edited by Bets, Apr 12 2018, 08:05 AM.

what are the girls like? by that age they have individual likes/ dislikes a girly girl won;t get caught dead in a go cart or a tom boyish one getting a makeover. Myabe try somethign that appeals toa variety ofinterest or have a few activities throughout the day so I hated X but loved Y will be true for most. The danger in intentiional not a gender spefi activy is that kids who like them because that is what ireally and truely likwe not b/c giorls are suposed to, get told somethoig is wrong / worse abot your choices.
