A friend of mine gave me a beautiful rug. It was one she used once or twice and she no longer needed it. She refused to let me pay her for it. I would like to get her some nice wine as a thank you gift. But I'm clueless on wine (please don't throw things at me). She likes Cabernet or a Red Blend. Can I please get ideas of a decent bottle (or bottles) to get her? Thank you! |

What is your price range? Melodramatic. Is a red blend on the low end (around $10) as is Josh Cellars. Ménage a Trois. Silk or Midnight. About the same price point. Ghost Pines. $18 Conundrum Red. $20 Tamarack Cellars. Firehouse Red $20 Prisoners Red $35 Leviathan Red. $50 I’ve had all of these. The first 5 are my favorite everyday wines and I buy by the 1/2 case to case - obviously for the price, but still darn good. May I suggest a bottle of wine in a basket with some cheeses, meats and crackers? I will second MrsPotts Costco recommendation and suggest Total Wine if you have one nearby. Do you have a Costco with a liquor store near you? They have a lot of really nice and reasonably priced wines, and at least at ours, the staff is really knowledgeable and can make good recommendations. |

I've found that wine priced over $25 a bottle is nice, and much better than cheaper wine. I'd splurge and get her a nice bottle of wne,as she may not buy the pricier stuff for herself (we don't, but really appreciate it as a gift!). I don't have and specific suggestions as I am not a Cabernet fan. |

If you are interested in considering imported wines, Australia produces good Cab Savs from South Australia’s Coonawarra and WA’s Margaret River regions, just check the labels of the bottles in your preferred price range. Both those regions produce good Merlots, as well. (Cab Sav & Merlot are my favourite reds, and I love Cabernet Merlot blends, for an overall softer effect from a straight Cab Sav.) Thank you for all the ideas. I was thinking of putting together a basket. As far as price point - I have no clue. Lol. I wanted to get her something decent. Since I don't know anything about wine, I wasn't sure if "decent" was $15 a bottle or $50. I'd like to spend about $50 total. I appreciate all the input so far. |

There are actually some very good wines at low price points. If you are looking for a higher point, Caymus puts out some lovely reds. Silver Oak is awesome. There’s also Rodney Strong and Duckhorn. Benovia and Acorn are also good. I love reds, but most of my over $40 bottles are Pinots (Tori Mor is my favorite) or local AZ wines by Paige Springs ( who puts out a really good Grenache from Cochise vineyards). When I lived in the PNW, I collected wines from that area and after moving to AZ belonged to over 10 wine clubs. I’m now down to one club and in search of decent SW wines. I agree with others who suggested Australian wines....even those from Chile are very good. |

I like the Robert Mondavi Private Select Cabernet. We tend to drink local wines. Chateau St Michelle makes a really nice Cab but I haven't seen it in stores. We had it at the winery but if you can find it the wine is really good. |

I like the La Crema Pinot Noir. I prefer the Willamette Valley version more than the Sonoma Coast, but both are good. I have never had a bad bottle of La Crema. It should be $25-30 roughly. Edited by bamafaith, Apr 11 2018, 10:00 PM.

Chateauneuf du Pape. A cheap bottle is $20 but they go up to $100 or more. There is one about $60 that I really love. Treana is a red blend from CA and $30-40 range. You can get these at Total Wine |

Good ideas! Maybe I will look for the local wines. We are planning a kayak trip to wineries in the Verde Valley area this summer. I know she would like to try some local wines! |

Gerard Bertrand Cote des roses...Grenache,Cinsault, Syrah from France via Costco and probably $15-20. I bought it for the rose imprint on the bottom of the bottle.🤫 It’s not bad. Also the cork is glass and I thought I could reuse the bottles for parties. http://www.gerard-bertrand.com/uploaded/produits/produits_photo3_53.jpg Edited by Figment, Apr 12 2018, 01:12 AM.

I'd go into my local liquor store and ask about local red wines and make up a basket. I love local winery wines! |

Are you in AZ? If so, the Verde Valley is home to some of the best wines AZ has to offer. Page Springs Cellars, AZ Stronghold, Burning Tree Cellars and Winery 101 (nice peep introduced me to this one and the also have a tasting room just a few miles from me) Page Springs Cellars has a great tasting room and property overlooking Oak Creek. They’ve a chef on staff and their food is quite good. There’s also a restaurant just up the road called “Up the Creek” that is also on Oak Creek and has great food too. |

This is the last wine I was truly impressed by. I never drink Australian wine, but tried it on a whim. (Ok, I admit by being swayed by the rabbit on the label ) It was so good we went out and bought another bottle to share with fellow wine loving friends a few days later.Spoiler: click to toggle Spoilered for massive pic. |

I'm a fan of the Conundrum red blend. It's a California wine that's mainly Zinfandel with a few other varietals mixed in. It runs in the $18-20 range. The white blend is good as well. |

I’ve bought many bottles of wine based on the label alone. Graphics freak!
