I didn't. Should I have? It was a woman LLC situation. Not HR Block or another multi-preparer business.

No. They set a price and you pay it.

It would never occur to me to do so, I assume they set the price they want and pay accordingly.

No way!

I did them myself, but even when I have paid someone I just paid the bill.

Though I did help my fil yesterday with his and saved him some money so he said he was going to give me some of his savings. ;)

Obviously I’m not going to take it.

This.

I hate tipping. A tax preparer is providing a service, however I’d never think to leave a tip. A stylist is also providing a service, but I’m an asshole if I don’t tip. Should I tip the florist? The newspaper delivery kid?

No. I would find it borderline offensive, honestly and definitely awkward. (I’m not a professional tax preparer but I could be)

Professionals set their own prices and are well paid. Do you tip your doctor? your dentist?

However, lawn maintenance, stylists, movers also provide services with set prices.

Hence I asked. I get the feeling people think it is a dumb question. I wasn't sure where the line was.

Hair dresser to me, not saying iam right differs if its the owner who sets the price or an employee who does not.

It’s not a stupid question.

Your examples above aren’t considered professionals. You don’t tip professionals (professional jobs are generally those that require college degrees - accountants, teachers, doctors, etc.)

Eta: you may not need a college degree to be a tax preparer, but it’s part of the accounting profession.

My mom would be so embarrassed if someone tried to tip her for doing their taxes.

However,.the local fudge and ice cream shop does give her free ice cream cones, which DD takes full.advantage of when she visits.

We sign up for the free tax prep offered by AARP at our local library. I make sure to have plenty of York peppermint patties to hand out to all of the volunteer accountants, & they seem pretty pleased w/ the "snack".

ETA: I am sure the AARP terms would not allow the tax expert volunteers to accept money.

I don't think it's a dumb question at all. The list of people we need to tip seems to be constantly growing. I lose track of whom I have to tip and whom I don't.

This. So when the owner of the salon cut my hair, he didn’t get a tip. I did, however, tip the lady who washed my hair.

There is a couple of colleges and a group here that does taxes for those with incomes under like $50k I think it was this year. You show up, sign up and then they call you back and do your taxes. They give you copies and send you on your merry way. This service is free, the student get class credit or the others are just volunteers. So you don't pay or even tip so for all the years I've been going to them I usually buy a couple bags of chocolates and leave those for everyone to snack on or one year when you were able to actually sign up for a time and I picked early morning I hauled in donuts.

I figure regular business of any kind price as they want to be paid and when we agree to use them that's what I pay.... if they wanted more then they should have quoted a higher price. I abhor tipping every.god.damn.body when instead they should just be asking what they think they are worth to start with (excluding wait staff because I know in USA this hasn't gone by the wayside but should and prices be adjusted to have the business afford to pay their own staff IMO).

It would be awkward, as my tax prepairer is my CPA husband. Since I already do the cooking and cleaning, I figure that's his chore.

Anyway, he's working from home right now, so I just went into his office and asked him. He told me that no, he does not get tipped, nor does he expect it.

One of his longtime clients likes to bring him coffee and treats when she picks up her taxes, but she's the exception and not the rule.

I've been preparing taxes for 12 years, and the only tips I've ever received have been food. Cash would be super awkward, but I had a client who sent chocolate-covered strawberries on April 15th every year (her taxes were usually done well before that date), and she was very much appreciated.

This year, I filed everything myself. In previous years, we've used an accountant that charged between 250-350 dollars. We most certainly did not tip him.
