Talk to me about carry on bags

I know a lot of you are seasoned travelers. Can anyone recommend a good carry on bag for me? I'm looking for a backpack or something I can wear. I want something light weight (obviously) and I prefer something that can fit under the seat in front of me that a FA won't force me to put in the overhead bin. I like having all my stuff in arms reach. Plus the one time I borrowed a friend's wheeled carry on luggage and it had to be stowed overhead, there was turbulence the entire flight, the seat belt light never went off (it was a short flight thankfully) and the FAs yelled at me every time I made a move to grab my bag.

I have a TLS backpack that I love for traveling. I think I got it on ebags.com. It's a *little* bigger than the published size limits (like 1.5" on one dimension). I've never had a problem getting it on as a personal item, but YMMV. I had the worst time finding anything in the "personal item" size range. Everything that was okay in two of the three dimensions, but the 17" long side is a bitch to try to find. Everything I've seen is 19" even in what's considered an extra small backpack.

I use a carry on and a big purse, stuff I need in flight goes in the purse, everything else (literally) goes in the carry on. Back packs are tricky - small enough to fit under the seat is too small to hold everything, for me.

Another thought: I have a 21 inch rollaboard that I can pack quite a bit of stuff in, but at the top, I pack a little nylon drawstring bag/backpack that I take out and keep under my seat. It has all the things I’m going to use while I’m on the plane, but it doesn’t take up much room under the seat.

I have the Lo & Sons OMG bag. That thing is INDESTRUCTABLE. I like the tote bag style, and it had a shoulder strap, so options for carrying. It also has more pockets than I know what to do with!
Spoiler: click to toggle

They also make a backpack, the Hanover, that has great reviews.

Me too.

A large purse will hold: my wallet, Ipad, cell phone, charging cables, a couple of magazines, and a snack or two.

My carry on suitcase has everything else: clothes, toiletries, shoes, jewellery, etc.

I just have a dakine backpack and duffel. Nothing fancy but still rugged.

I have a few that I use, a computer tote bag (has a sleeve for my laptop and my tablet) plus room for chargers, water, snack etc.
I also have a rolling backpack. Both fit under the seat, and if necessary, can hold a small purse in case I need to carry on my luggage.

I’m using a roll on and a leather backpack(my personal item) for my trip to Italy this fall. The backpack fits under the seat and holds anything I need to get my hands on during the flight (snacks, earplugs, iPad etc). I’m also putting a crossbody bag in the backpack that I will use as a purse for daytrips.

Same here, I use a big purse or backpack (my backpack may be a little over the limit in 1 direction, but no one has ever bothered me, I don't pack it full-full so it will still squish under the seat).

If you are just using a small purse and an overhead bag, take your book/e-reader/whatever out before you board, and carry it in your hand when you board and put it in the seat back pocket when you sit down.

I have a 21" Samsonite spinner that goes into the overhead, and a Samsonite backpack for under the seat in front of me. It has a loop at the back so it can ride on the suitcase if I don't want to wear it. Works well for my purposes.

This is the backpack: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZDFWMR6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Another thing I just thought of. I usually try to stick to a single piece of carry-on luggage. But I will stick a cheap bag in it so that if I have to gate check it, I can pull out the essential stuff before sending it off to the cargo hold.

Thanks guys, I'm looking at the bags you suggested online. And thanks Sugaree, I've never heard of ebags.com before. They have a lot of cool stuff!

Sorry I didn't come back, it was so weird, the internet at work went down and when it booted back up, I couldn't access this site. My link didn't work and when I googled 'zetaboards invisapeeps', which is my backup plan if my link doesn't work, all these weird search results popped up, none of which were from the actual zetaboards site. I dunno if the site was down for a minute or what.

I just read online the carry on restrictions. We're flying United (I've never flown an airline other than Delta before so I'm kinda nervous) and it looks like we're only allowed 1 personal item in the cabin. If we show up to the gate with a full size carry on bag (like the mini-luggage with wheels) they'll force us to check it and charge a fee for doing so. Kind of a bummer. I'm so used to Delta where I can bring my purse and a carry on bag. We booked our flight through a travel agency though as part of a vacation package and they have us with economy tickets. We're not premier members either so screw us lol. Unfortunately this narrows down my carry on bag choices. I don't want them taking my stuff from me at the gate because it's 1 inch too big. I also have to rethink how I'll bring a purse since my current bag is too big to fit into a backpack along with my other stuff.

I have have flown with my jansport big student backpack multiple times as a carryon without issue. It fits under the seat as long as I don't shove it full.

That's the basic economy setup. I was afraid that the award tickets I booked for this summer were going to be converted to basic when it was introduced a few months ago. So far so good, but it's something to watch for in the future.

Is it a direct flight? I've found it is easier to check my bag when I'm on a direct flight, and just put what I need in a large purse.

Are you looking for a bag for clothing or just a bag to carry on a few items?

I carry on a large purse, with my medications and other important stuff and check my bags.

United offers an option to purchase premier boarding even if you are flying economy. This means you get to carry a purse and another carry on, and board earlier. It’s kind of pricey, but given the enormous bags some people bring on, I find it worthwhile so that my stuff can go in an overhead bin.

I recently flew to florida. I check a bag, I just don't have the ability to pack small.

For my carry on I took the backpack that I use for work, just a normal backpack. My purse, tablet, kindle, chargers, meds, and snacks all fit inside. I don't like to carry on more than I need. It will fit beneath my feet, but I am tall and like the leg room, so I took out my kindle and a small snack, and then put it in the overhead.

I also had to take my cpap as a carry on. Because it is medical equipment it doesn't count against the limit of what you can take.
