I'm still sorting my schedule for the week, so I'm not sure if I'm doing the London protest or the one at Blenheim. But I kind of want to see the giant baby Trump. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/07/06/angry-trump-baby-blimp-fly-london-presidents-uk-visit/ A giant balloon depicting Donald Trump as an angry, orange baby will fly near Parliament during the US president's controversial visit to the UK next week. Permission for the 20ft (6m) high inflatable, dubbed "Trump Baby", to rise above Parliament Square Gardens for two hours on the morning of Friday July 13 has been granted to protesters by the Greater London Authority. Mr Trump is expected to arrive in the capital the evening before the planned stunt and is likely to visit Blenheim Palace, meet the Queen at Windsor, hold talks with Prime Minister Theresa May at Chequers, and travel to his golf courses in Scotland during the trip. London Mayor Sadiq Khan and the American leader have engaged in a long-running war of words over issues like crime and terrorism. Activist Leo Murray said: "We didn't get off to the best start with the Mayor's office over this, who originally told us that they didn't recognise Trump Baby as legitimate protest. "But, following a huge groundswell of public support for our plan, it looks like City Hall has rediscovered its sense of humour. Trump Baby will fly." A spokesman for the Nona Hurkmans group, which is behind the protest, said: "We are just a small group of friends who set out to use humour to take a stand against the rise of racist and fascist politics both here in the UK and over in the US. The inflatable 'baby' clutches a mobile phone The inflatable 'baby' clutches a mobile phone "We have been genuinely overwhelmed and touched by the incredible levels of support we have received for our project." More than 10,000 people signed a petition calling for the inflatable to be given permission to fly, activists said. |

Since the UK does actually have a titled nobility, class has a specific meaning. It has fuck all to do with public engagement and activitism. While most of us american immigrants don't have votes in the upcoming november, we'll still remember this dumpster fire for the 2020. Additionally, citizens of the world have a right to protest against regimes that violate human rights, that destablise and make the world less safe. The UK has a vested interest in the unruly behaviour of the toddler in chief and it's impact on global stability and economics. The tories in particular need to understand that cooperation and capitulation to this regime will cost them. Seriously though, if you think this is bad, just wait 'til that fucker gets to Scotland. |

I’m so ashamed that this buffoon represents the US now and it’s both funny/fitting and disturbing how other countries are mocking our president. I was in London in fall 2008 and everyone I met disliked Bush but there wasn’t this virulent disgust. Edited by Gaping Maw, Jul 9 2018, 08:01 AM.

Protesting is "classy." I'd rather see a floating orange baby out there to make a point than people resorting to violence. A giant orange baby on a cell phone is a perfect caricature of Trump - he is orange (bad fake tan), he acts like a baby (see his Twitter rants and other tantrums), and he is unable to put the phone down. He's immature and apparently incapable of acting appropriately in basically any setting (hence the representation as a baby). It gets the point across without being violent (like the decapitated head stunt) or racist (like the drawings of the Obamas as monkeys). I think this a great example of an effective way to get your point across to many. msrock, why are you so insistent that people never speak up and out about a clearly lackluster leader? Would you have preferred it if our forefathers did not protest King George III? Would you be happier if our citizenry did not protest with MLK during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom? What about the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights? I guess in your world, we should all just sit down and take whatever shit is thrown at us rather than be vocal about our disapproval. I don't accept that and will continue my small part to protest against people like you here and where ever else I can by openly and loudly using my 1st Amendment right to do so. |

And yet, it would still see fewer murders (per capita) than it would in any of the 50 largest US cities. Perhaps we should fly it here to help prevent crime?? |

In the last 2-3months only---not on annualized figures. And while NY is certainly one of the 50 largest cities in the US, it's not the highest murder rate at all. So, yes, you can cherry-pick on data from the last couple of months (i've seen those articles, btw) but it doesn't change the overall fact that you are trying to portray London as being full of crime when it's still better than most of the US cities. So...not a 'swing and a miss'----simply a better use of data than what you want to focus on. Edited by bamafaith, Jul 9 2018, 11:17 AM.

No Fair Kanye! You're not letting people cherry-pick the one thing they want to talk about while disregarding actual statistics that show the whole picture! How can they try to make London look bad if you don't let them look at only the one tiny slice that supports their version of reality? How dare people be expected to look at all sides of something?? So unfair and sad. |

Same article. “Overall London has so far in 2018 seen fewer killings than New York City: 47 versus 54. Both cities have similarly sized populations of about 9 million.” |

It's possible the statistics are too close to call. I should not have cherry picked such an obscure source as USA Today. |

It's not your source that is the problem, as you well know. The problem is that you want to only look at data from the last couple of months (which has been covered in many different news sources---not just USA Today) and extrapolate that to a larger comment. The "statistics" aren't too close to call. If you include data from more than two months (even so little as the entire year of 2018) you get a much better picture of what is happening. You are trying to make a broad point using a tiny data point which is inaccurate. |

I'll be honest, I don't want trump, but I sure as hell won't be voting for Justin again. He's nice and shiny on the world stage, but I'm not impressed with anything this administration has done, save for the weed thing. He's a wishy washy, smile and make nice for the cameras, but do nothing leader. He's hung my province out to dry, and hasn't stepped up where he should have. I've been fortunate enough to meet him in person several times, and while I find him extremely likable as a person, I'm less than impressed with his leadership to date. Despite being a card carrying member of the liberal party, they won't get my vote with him as their leader. Edited by shantroy, Yesterday, 2:16 PM.

My sister-in-law lives in Glasgow but will be in Bristol during Trump's visit. She commented on FB that she's going to start practicing her Glaswegian accent while he's in the country. I'm sure her comment was meant to be sarcastic, however I wouldn't want to be associated with him in any way while he is visiting either. Even if the only association is that we share the same nationality. |

Why are you so insistent that protesting be stifled? Flying a giant orange baby effigy of the US President sends a pretty clear message without being violent or racist. Great Britain has been a close ally of ours for quite a while now, as have many other countries. I think it's important to note that our democracy defending partners are not happy with the turn our country has taken. This should not be dismissed as merely a distasteful stunt.
