It was six p.m. on October 31st, and the students were arriving for the annual Hallowe'en Masquerade. The lawns of L'Église St-Claire had been converted into a field of jack-o'lanterns and a corn maze, the corridors into something of a haunted house, and then ball room... well, it was the ball room. The vaulted ceiling was dazzling black and indigo, and orange and yellow banners hung about the room. This year's 'centerpiece' was a massive pumpkin vaulted onto wheels, pulled by a pack of thestrals (draped in ghostly blankets for the benefit of those who could not see them), which would carry students around the hall at their request in short rides. The stage was currently occupied by L'Église's Choeur des sans-coeurs, the resident ghost choir, who were moaning some dreadfully depressing (but topical!) ballad. (It was unclear whether they were intending to preform a concert or merely rehearsing; it was rumoured that many of the ghosts had actually died together during one fateful practice, and later been joined by other wandering spirits.) Scarecrows with pumpkin heads danced on the floor in a way that may have been intended as sophisticated and artistic but came off as rather unnatural and creepy (but thankfully they seemed to be keeping to themselves). There was a stand with a few snacks and an everflowing fountain of punch next to an enormous tankard of caramel butterbeer with green apples floating in it. There would be a costume-judging contest, and jack-o'lantern carving, and of course, dancing. Later in the evening, there some more lively musical performances were scheduled, from such bands as Amortentious, and Pixie Pox and the Doxy Boys. It was intended to run until midnight, at which point the pumpkin-carriage would probably shrivel to its normal size and everyone's slippers would turn to glass or some such trivial nonsense (and none of the staff would profess accountability to any of this). It was also intended to be a mischief-free, thoroughly sober affair... but that was just intent, not magic. Edited by Deo Teresi, Oct 12 2013, 12:19 AM.

Halloween. Gigi had fond memories of the holiday from her childhood, a rare day her and her brother could go to the muggle world and blend in with just a touch of make-up. She remembered the fun of a masquerade at MacOncan, even though her ears always gave away which Sterlingscale girl was behind the mask. It was a fun day full of tasty treats and a chance to have fun being a little scared. She didn't really celebrate it again until she took up the job as Professor of Magical Languages, but once Gigi was back in this ballroom it was easy to fall back into the spirit of Halloween. Watching her students dance and play games and have a night off from school work - she could remember what that was like. Plus, she much preferred chaperoning the ball to grading papers. Her sixth years had just taken a test on Mermish, and trying to decipher their shrieking attempts at answers gave her a headache. Not that they couldn't find ways to irritate her tonight, sneaking in Firewhiskey and taunting the thestrals, but it was a change of pace. "Mommy!" Lucie said, and tugged on the hem of her mother's dark purple gown, "Is there any car'mel? Could I have some? Please?" Gigi smiled. That was another reason she loved Halloween these days. Lucie loved it, too. The spooky music, the smell of sweets in the air, the feeling of heavy costumes and face paint. Her magic went wild around all the enchantments set up in the ballroom. She was dressed as a 'rainbow', something Gigi had tried to discourage as rainbows are not tangible things one could dress as, but after the third time she woke up to her daughter having hair the colour of bubbles (her magic knew about as much about what a rainbow looked like as Lucie herself), she gave up and went to muggle Montreal to buy her some colourful clothes and a mask shaped like a cloud. "Yes dear, it looks like there's a caramel butterbeer. You may have a cup," she said, her tone indulging but firm. Wizarding dentists never quite managed to fill in their cavities correctly, what with the Goblin teeth, and they certainly couldn't go to a muggle dentist. "Thank you!" Lucie said with a smile and reached up to hold her mother's hand. Gigi took her daughter's hand and walked over to the refreshments table. She poured a cup for Lucie and a small one for herself to sip as her daughter took her time to drink, listening to the somewhat morbid music that filled the hall as scarecrows danced (for once, Gigi was thankful her daughter couldn't see, as they might give her nightmares) and the students began to arrive. |

Cassia arrived to the ball with a laugh on her lips and eye sparkling with mischief. She'd skipped a costume in favour of a silver owl mask and a dress slashed through with red, stepping over to admire the pumpkin carriage centerpiece on wobbly heels. She'd tied her hair back as well, braiding it with a scarlet ribbon. Halloween. Was there ever such a night? She could dance, she could play tricks, she could wave her wand and make things happen without the scorn of her classmates... The Marinos Haunted Halloween House was legend in her neighborhood. No one knew exactly how all of the tricks were pulled off, but they all agreed it was very scary before joining in the backyard garden for drinks and mischief among the trees. Cassia hated missing it, but her sisters would tell her everything; who had screamed, who had hooked up, and who had thrown up in the bushes in front of everyone. Yes, missing the Haunted Halloween House was the only downside to being at MacOncan. That, and not having a date. She hadn't thought it wise to ask Cor, not when he was still getting used to things. (Bless him, hopefully he knew how to spot a drink spiked with love potion) And she wasn't going to ask someone else. She would go alone, dance with everyone, and see who spiked the punch. She was fabulous and she was here. That was enough for Halloween. |

Halloween, a holiday celebrated by Wizards and Muggles. Well, there were a good chuck of holidays both worlds shared but that wasn't the point. It was a day where wizards could go out without worry or care about how the general population thought of their clothing and a day Yumi LOVED more than any other day of the year. Even her birthday. Every year since becoming the Muggle studies teacher, Yumi had put her heart and soul into making lovely muggle culture costumes for the Halloween ball. Mind you, Yumi wasn't the best sewer but the end result was always a hit. She'd been Mulan, Corpse Bride, Dot from Reboot etc.. Plus, any student in her class who could properly name who she was dressed and from what would get a few bonus marks on their next test. :) This year she'd settled on Rapunzel from Disney's Tangled movie which included a purple corseted dress, ballet flats and blonde ankle long wig, enchanted with magic to stay in one wavy flowing shape and not hook onto anything. Koji the Kappa had changed his mind several times and had finally decided to be the royal family's paper lantern from the same movie. Yumi stood by the entrance welcoming students in. She had a warm smile on her face as she complimented students, "Why aren't you scary?...Those are some Dashing wizarding robes Micheal.... Oh, Another princess, your highness." Koji the Kappa was having quite the time. With a enchanted glowing paper tube around his middle and the rest of him covered in black ninja clothes, he'd leap from the top of the hall door frame and slowly drifting down upon the students entering the hall. She sighed a little bit after a group of couples entered the hall. Once again she was dateless. No. She patted her cheeks She had to stay strong. Strong, for all the gals who also didn't have dates. Who needed a date? Single ladies unit! Still, It would be nice. |

There was something lacking when it came to Halloween in the wizarding world. The magic, in a sense, took away from the... magic. So Meryl thought. When she was a first year, stepping into the Halloween Ball was a dazzling affair... for a minute or so. It didn't take long for the longing of simple pleasures to dampen the effects of the over-the-top decorations and occasion-appropriate magic. She missed celebrating Halloween in Tillamook with her brother and her dad in their small house in the woods. There was true magic in throwing a sheet over her head with asymmetrical holes cut out for her eyes and running through the trees and then along the gloomy beach with her family on her heels. The food was nice but she preferred those home-made pumpkin seeds, roasted as she carved intricate little stories around a gutted pumpkin's face. She missed the sound of her dad's voice asking, "And what's the story here?" She missed telling the tale of whatever dream had been haunting her that year as he carefully dropped a candle into the empty stomach of her freshly carved gourd. And yet there was little to be unsatisfied about. She would enjoy herself and write about it in the morning. Tilly would take her night miles away. So it was up to her to make it worth the trip. She entered the ball with a long, green dress falling along her frame like a calm river. There was a great deal of fabric draped on her back, falling and then coming back up to the bracelets clinging to her wrists. They were fabric wings, fashioned to reveal themselves if she lifted her arms. Yet she wore the mask of a deer, delighting in the pair of horns that donned her crown. She wasn't one for consistency so much as personal preference. She liked the wings of moths and the horns of deer so that is what she wore on the night where she could be anything her heart desired. "Ah man," she murmured to herself, studying the main floor, "I didn't even think about bringing a date. Haha, wow, mom's gonna be like 'whaat'." |
