The Vrenn are a grey skinned, bipedal race most notable for their homegrown weapons technology, their inherent mild xenophobia and their three eyes arranged in a horizontal line, with the central eye being much larger than the other two and set slightly higher up in the forehead to accommodate the nose. It also glows in the dark, a side product of the Vrenn's impressive night vision. Normally they use their two auxiliary eyes to avoid freaking out the other species but in battle they use their central eye - in fact Vrenn helmets are designed so that the central eye can see out and the other two view HUDs. They are easily distinguishable by their skin tone, eye colour and hair, which is normally grown very long and can be dark red, navy blue, or any shade of grey from white to black. They are in general very slender and have distinct male and female genders. They live in a patriarchal society with one 'alpha male' ruling over a harem of females and several younger males. When the alpha male is on his deathbed he nominates a successor. The Vrenn are very paranoid, with access to their home system strictly monitored by a system of fighter bases and battlestations. The Vrenn provide the majority of the ground forces for the Inusannon. The concept for the Vrenn came to me rather suddenly as I was watching one of my friends trying to convince me to buy that cock-up of a game Fire Warrior off him for some extortionate price. I thought to myself: What a crappy game, but the Tau would be awesome in Mass Effect. In their first incarnation they were blue and had two eyes, but they quickly began to diverge from resembling male Asari. I borrowed the hair from the Wraith of Stargate Atlantis, turned their purple lasers into proton beams and stole the eyes from the Buzz Droids of Revenge of the Sith fame. And so the Vrenn came into being. |
