The Netauri originated on a planet composed primarily of ocean but with a single archipelago of small islands stretching around the entire planet. The Netauri are equally at home in water or on land, being a fully amphibious species. The Netauri's most obvious distinguishing feature is their heads, which are very similar to that of the terrestrial hammerhead shark, although they possess four eyes situated in the centre of their heads and the sides of their heads are very bony. They also have retractable claws on their hands, webbed feet and a long, thin tail. They were once a highly respected and civilised species based on a benevolent caste system, a perfect example of a harmonious civilisation, until the Netauri encountered another highly advanced species, the Rilrod. The aggressive Rilrod began a campaign against the lightly defended Netauri worlds, using their vastly superior technology to destroy any armada sent against them. In their desperation the Netauri created a device that allowed a member of the upper caste to absorb the 'essence' of another Netauri, in effect greatly improving their intelligence but reducing the other individual to an animalistic state. Using this technology the upper caste of the Netauri used their newfound hyper-intelligence to develop weapons and barriers far surpassing those of the Rilrod, causing the extinction of the entire species but at the cost of their own civilisation. Netauri technology very closely resembles the technology of the Protheans, leading many to hypothesise that the Protheans had access to large Netauri data caches. Now the Netauri are a sad reflection of a self-destructive civilisation. Whilst the upper caste are elegant, sophisticated aristocrats with lifespans pushing 2000 years, the lower caste are unintelligent savages with lifespans of only around thirty years. When coming up with the Netauri I was thinking of a medieval style feudal system with the majority of the race as 'peasants' and a select group controlling the lower caste. Then I decided to see exactly how extreme I could make the division, eventually reducing the lower caste to a non-intelligent, animalistic state similar to the Vorcha but even more extreme, whilst elevating the upper caste to a hyper-sophisticated, aristocratic group. It could be fun to explore the attitudes of the upper caste to the lower caste, and also the way the other Inusannon races see the self imposed divide between the castes. |
