The Kfeistr are an unusual race that think in a very unusual way. Although each Kfeistr is an individual they are all linked into something resembling a hive mind. The Kfeistr are actually divided into six 'genders', each one playing a different role in Kfeistr society. The two Kfeistr genders most commonly encountered by other races are the Warriors, ferocious creatures whose sole purpose is to wage war, and the Greeters who are recognised as some of the most beautiful creatures in the galaxy and maintain relations with the other races. The other four genders are the Builders, enormous multi-limbed creatures that construct the Kfeistr's enormous orbital nests, the Thinkers, hyper-intelligent creatures that act both as scientists and organic computers, Fliers, small, rodent-like creatures that crew Kfeistr ships and Mothers that live deep in the hearts of the nests whose purpose is to give birth to new Kfeistr. The 'gender' of the newborn Kfeistr is determined by the gender of the Kfeistr that fertilised the Mother. Given that the genders range from beautiful humanoids to sixty metre insectoid monsters it is reasonable to assume that the six genders are actually six separate species but DNA sequencing has shown that every newborn Kfeistr carries the genetic data for all six genders and as the child matures the unused DNA is slowly removed from the cells.
For this species I tried to create a culture totally alien to anything humans know, using a bizarre fusion of individualism and hive mind to achieve the desired effect. The idea is that the architecture of a Kfeistr's mind is so completely different than our own that most of the 'genders' would be completely incapable of coexisting with other species. Only the Greeters can communicate with other races, so much so that in joint operations each squad of Warriors must have a Greeter attached to it in order to interpret communications from other units.
