The Atayo are a race from the Atay Nebula dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. Their home system had been converted into an enormous library protected by automated battlestations and fleets. The Atayo themselves always travel in threes and live aboard spaceships in which they wander the galaxy studying whatever takes their fancy. Their ships are very heavily armed and mostly automated, although the Atayo still do most of the piloting. They have no central government of any sorts; Atayo freely explore and collect knowledge, returning to their home system only to deposit their papers. Their entire bank of knowledge was destroyed by the Reapers and they were only able to salvage 0.6% of their racial knowledge. The Fall of the Library is agreed to be the most tragic event in the destruction of the Inusannon one hundred thousand years ago.
The Atayo have changed a lot since the original concept of the Tissarak, a forest of sentient trees spanning an entire planet that spawn drones akin to ambulatory plants to seek out knowledge and deliver it back to the hive mind. When the Inusannon turned into the inhabitants of an evacuation fleet sentient trees were no longer practical and therefore the Tissarak drones became the Atayo. The creation of the Atayo conveniently created a race that could be both Adept and Engineer for the multiplayer. Then I heard that the statues on Ilos were supposed to be Inusannon and gave the Atayo tentacle beards.
