Greetings and Welcome to Mass Effect Universe!
My name is Avina, allow me to be your virtual guide to better acclimate yourself into this wonderful extranet-based roleplaying forum. With a member-generated history and a plethora of organizations and technologies created over the years, it is understandable from both the perspective of members and staff that things can seem quite daunting at first. In order to assist with easier understanding and acclimation into the world of Mass Effect Universe, I have been programmed to provide basic guidance regarding points of interest and aid you in getting started.

What is Mass Effect Universe?
MEU is an online roleplaying community that has been functioning since December of 2007, created shortly after the release of the very first Mass Effect game. It features a rich and diverse fan-created universe that is tied closely to the canon of the Mass Effect franchise.

Put simply, the events of Mass Effect 1 and 2 are considered canon on the site, while much of Mass Effect 3 has been discarded and retooled to better suit the needs and desires of the community.

For a more comprehensive look into MEU’s in-character history, please refer to the MEU Site Canon-Fanon Timeline.

What kind of Guidelines and Rules are there?
It should not be sugar-coated that the Rules and Regulations of MEU are rather extensive and may seem overwhelming. Rest assured they only exist to provide the most fair and balanced Roleplaying experience that MEU can offer.

The list of general rules ranging from Site-wide to Chat-box regulations can be found here, MEU's Rules. This thread covers OOC, IC and Cbox rules. You can also keep an eye on Announcements and News for... well, announcements and news.

The rest regarding creations and usage can be found in the Site Rules and Information forum section.

So who's in charge?
The staff behind MEU consists of a team of dedicated and passionate moderators and admins that managed site matters such as site-wide story arcs, creation reviews, or events that get out of hand. The Lead Admin is the individual depicted as having the Reaper rank. They are the top of the staff tiers (they have the same powers as Councilor ranked Admins, but they are considered the top admin), next are the Councilors, or Team Admins, who help the Reaper (crazy right?) manage MEU, and assist with reviews and submissions along with the rest of the staff. Helping the Reaper and Councilors keep MEU moving in an orderly fashion are the Keepers, or Moderators. The staff is a close-knit group that remains in strong communication with one another and the overall user base on many problems, inquiries or other issues that occur within the confines of MEU.

To keep track of just whom in particular are considered part of the Staff-team, you can check the Administrators and Moderators List and the Getting To Know Your Staff thread. Staff members are open to answering any questions and concerns as soon as they reasonably can. Should you find yourself unable to ask a staff member for help in the forum’s chat-box, do not hesitate to send them or another staff member a Private Message.

In the cbox, moderators show up in blue, admins show up in red.

How do I make a character?
Before starting on your first MEU character please make sure to utilize all of the forum's resources to better understand the rules of the Mass Effect Universe as talked about above. In order to begin any roleplaying you must have an approved character and this is where that journey begins. Do not be intimidated by the process nor the amount of information out there. Any submitted character will receive assistance and guidance from the Staff in making sure it can be approved in a timely manner.
Step One:
Read the Standard Creation Guidelines. These are a list of general rules and guidelines that apply universally to all creations on the site unless stated otherwise.
Step Two:
Next, you'll want to read the Character Creation Guidelines. This will inform you on about everything you need to know about character creation before the review. For specific questions and in depth information on the various species of mass effect, and special rules that may apply, consult The Species of Mass Effect: Informational Index.
Step Three:
Following that, you'll want to take a quick look at the Advanced Character Guidelines to check and make sure if your character would be considered advanced. If no, then don't worry about it. If yes, then please read the rules and guidelines that accompany it. Chances are you might not be able to make this particular character right away, but don't be discouraged. After spending some time getting used to the site with a different character and getting to know some fellow members, you'll likely have what you need to make it.
Step Four:
Now that you've done that, you can finally get to posting your character. You can start a new topic in the WIP (work in progress) Character Subforum if you plan on working on the character before requesting a review from one of the staffers. You can use the edit feature to add and modify your post/character sheet as many times as you like until you feel that it is ready. If your character is already complete (perhaps with a google doc or something else) you can post directly in the (not WIP) Characters Subforum if you think you'll have your character ready to be reviewed as soon it's submitted.

Once you are ready to have one of the staffers look at it, simply put '[READY]' on the topic title of the post, and make a new post in the same thread, stating that it is ready (this is called bumping the submission). From there, if your character is still in the WIP Character Subforum, it will be moved by a staff-member to the (not WIP) Character Subforum where it will be reviewed as soon as a staff member has the time to do so. Please remember that if it is in WIP, if it doesn't have [READY] in the title, and if you don't post in it, you should not expect the staff to know to move it. Help us help you. If you state that it is not ready, it will be moved back into the WIP section, regardless if you are almost done or plan to finish soon. Don't worry though, you can still finish it, and all it will require is bumping the thread again. You may ask the staff-member to remove bump posts, so don't worry about clogging up your thread.
Step Five:
Wait for a Staff member to reply to you submission. If your character is approved you can begin roleplaying right away! If it is not approved initially, the Staff member will provide directions for you so that you can work on the character and get it approved. Once the Staff member approves the character you are good to go! Just remember to be patient and feel free to ask for more assistance from the Staff. We are here to help.
Extra Tips:
If you've already looked over the rules and character guidelines and you're still unsure about how to proceed, I would suggest looking at the Approved Character Subforum for ideas. All of the profiles there have already gone through the review process and have been approved by staff, so you should be able to get an understanding of how to get your character approved. When making a character, there are a few things to be aware of. In particular; character classes. On Mass Effect Universe, classes act somewhat different than seen in the games. Classes gauge the basic specialization of a character. An engineer would be someone that knows how to fix things or make computers. An infiltrator would be someone that’s naturally sneaky. As well as that, classes can be “mixed and matched” to a certain degree. For example, one could create an engineer that was skilled with sniper rifles or maybe a sentinel that was good with a wrench. Lightly altering the skill-set of a class is permitted, simply as long as one remains true to the core-abilities of a class (IE; no using Infiltrator abilities with an Adept, etc etc). For more information on classes and their core-abilities, you may review the Class Roles, Abilities & Equipment guide.

Now that I have an approved character how do I get into roleplays?
First of all this thread discusses this topic in more detail. The simplest way to get into a roleplay is to interact with other writers on the site and come up with ideas for a roleplay. You can do this through the Cbox at the bottom of the site, Private Messaging and the Plot Development forum.

Okay! I think I got it. But, what should I do first?
Well, MEU is a social community after all. Introducing yourself would be a great first step! You can do this in the Introductions subforum (imagine that!). Or if you’re feeling particularly chatty, jumping into the cbox at the bottom of the forum is a great way to start making friends!

In conclusion...
We here at MEU hope that you find your stay here with us both enjoyable and memorable. Should you have any questions that are beyond my parameters following this orientation, please contact the friendly MEU Staff
