ILOS, SOMEWHERE BEYOND THE MARBLE TOWN BASE PERIMETER... Contrary to other marines at the outpost, Corporal Robert Eaves loved driving the Mako here. He grew up driving with his dad on off-road tracks in jeeps and trucks. And on Ilos, even with the architecture, everywhere was considered off-road. When a road or path turned into a mesh of vines and tree roots he'd find away around them over various bumps and obstacles. His passengers, though, weren't so enthusiastic. A Private Twombley and one of the asari archaeologists never let go of the 'Oh Shit' bars placed around the cabin. And the asari was needing to focus on the navigational display in front of her so they would end up at the right spot. "Maker help me, don't you know how to avoid obstacles?" asked Twombley as they vaulted over a footpath with some decent walls on either side. "Nope!" responded Eaves confidently. "Seriously you make it seem like you enjoy being here." "Well, you know, it's part of the whole experience. Going to new worlds and see new civilizations and all that-" "Oh please not with that corny sci-fi crap. Seriously your optimism about this tour is getting annoying." "Because I get paid to go off-roading in the best arena there possibly is: the Final Frontier." "Will you two please be quiet I'm having a...hard enough time keeping track of our position without the bumpy ride," uttered the asari, pausing when another bump shuddered the Mako. "Don't worry, ma'am. I know exactly where we're going," spoke Eaves with a calmly confident tone. "It's just around this bend on that hill and right about-" Eaves stopped when his forward sensor display started fizzing on the picture, he gave it a slap but it did nothing to fix the poor picture quality. "-here." Eaves looked through the windows expecting something out there but didn't see more than the usual old buildings and the plants that used them. The trio disembarked the Mako and started walking forward. The asari used her omni-tool to try to scan the area while the marines had their rifles ready and eyes looking for any threats. "You said the drone crashed around here?" asked Eaves. "Or somewhere nearby. We lost contact with it in this area and it never came back. Unknown power loss." They continued surveying the area, finding that even their omni-tools were having a hard time functioning. They eventually found the drone, having hit a wall and now laying lopsided on the ground. As the asari tended to it Twombley looked around the perimeter. "Hey guys...I think you're gonna wanna see this," he called out. The other two joined him to see something that they didn't quite expect there. MANY HOURS LATER... After emerging from the mass relay to the Refuge System the Alliance stealth frigate, Ain Jalut, immediately had set a course to Ilos orbit. It's time on training maneuvers had been cut short when contact was lost with the base on Ilos, codenamed "Marble Town", and was scrambled to jump into the system to investigate. As it possessed a unique, ground-based relay that could link directly to the Citadel station's interior it was a major security issue that the Alliance took great steps to protect with Citadel cooperation. Any ship in the stealth fleet would be the first arrival to any incident on Ilos - such as a lost of QEC and light-based communications with the base there. Once in orbit the ship tried multiple times to contact the ground base. No other ships could be detected in the system nor signs of any ships recently. It wasn't until several attempts that they did get a response by text-only message that the base was suffering issues with base systems and communications, forcing it to miss a check-in. Regardless of the reason the ship's commanding officer, Captain Jeremiah Reed, knew that he couldn't leave the system without an inspection first. Leaving his XO, Lieutenant Commander Sandra Kelso, in command of the ship he took the ship's Kodiak shuttle with his marine officer, Staff Lieutenant Joe Ford, his MPs and a few ASA operatives who were re-tasked to his mission during the scramble. As the shuttle entered the atmosphere, still a ways out from the base, Reed reviewed the mission. "Okay people, you know the drill. When we land we search the base top to bottom before we leave. I don't need to stress how vital this facility is. If you see anything suspicious you report to me and me alone. I know it seems cruel but we do what we have to." "So basically the rule of thumb is trust no one?" spoke up Lieutenant Ford. "Everyone's aware that if the base goes dark for any reason we need to do an inspection. But always keep an eye out for anything beyond ordinary." "I don't know. Stuck on a planet in the middle of nowhere with no ties to the outside universe at all for months at a time. I'd call that beyond ordinary." Edited by ThatPatriot, Jul 26 2014, 01:23 AM.

Athena Lane stood a short distance away from the rest during the briefing, leaning on the wall. She listened to every word, but she kept her eyes fixed on the floor. Her black and gray uniform was unmarked, as usual for ASA, and her reddish-orange hair was tied in a ponytail behind her head. Scars were faintly visible on her face, lines of slightly darker skin stretching out from her eyes. Her arms were crossed She was grateful of the downtime she had gotten during the trip to Ilos, as short as it was, it had cleared her head a bit. She was able to think and analyze her orders rather than just blindly obeying - not that she wasn't going to obey in any case. She thought that this mission was hardly usual for her, as she usually dealt in solo assassination missions. This must have been a test, to see how she would act if told to follow someone else's orders. Just thinking about her instructions made her mind cloud over: attach to the SSV Ain Jalut, obey mission superiors until mission is over. Superiors were to be considered to have Level 2 security clearance unless proven otherwise. Of course, she knew how to operate with a fireteam, and had done so in the past. At least when it wasn't her handler giving her the orders then she didn't completely cloud over. "I assume the Marble Town base is heavily fortified." Athena spoke up softly, cutting into the banter. "If it was taken, this could only be an inside job, which also explains the lack of a distress signal and the later text-only message to hide their identity. We should expect the base defenses to be turned against us. Even if this is just an inspection, and there's a good chance I'm wrong, it would be best not to get too close to the GARDIAN cannons." Giving her opinion, making a judgement on something other than shoot-now-or-later, these were things that she couldn't do on a normal mission. She decided to enjoy it while she could. |

"I assume the Marble Town base is heavily fortified." Athena spoke up softly, cutting into the banter. "If it was taken, this could only be an inside job, which also explains the lack of a distress signal and the later text-only message to hide their identity. We should expect the base defenses to be turned against us. Even if this is just an inspection, and there's a good chance I'm wrong, it would be best not to get too close to the GARDIAN cannons." Lt. Ford looked at the spook, curious about the input she had to provide. Captain Reed stepped in before he could speak. "There shouldn't be any issues with the flight in, Miss Lane. We don't know the whole situation yet. The response to our challenge was included in the base commander's message. Only a handful of people would know to even provide that information. So let's keep the speculation down for now until we get there." As the shuttle approached the surface Joe took a look through the holodisplay "window" on one of the doors. Outside he saw the ruins of the ancient alien city below. The vegetation had overrun the buildings and streets. Save for the alien architecture it almost looked like a scene from one of those South American or East Asian ruins Joe had seen in historical vids. And given how a lot of the city seemed to be somewhat intact he imagined that any archaeologist would kill to get a position here; of course, if they knew that Ilos was reachable. From what he heard it was hell trying to find the relay that connects to the cluster. The base came into view although much of it wasn't visible in open air. Even with Jeremiah's security clearance there were still a number of details he wasn't fully privy to - just what ONI kept available for the stealth fleet's captains and brass. But he didn't take the time to think too much of it. He kept it professional. When the shuttle landed, the marines moved out to secure the pad and Jeremiah headed to the main pad entrance. The welcome came inside the facility after the landing pad, with the base commander and a few Army MPs ready to accept the inspectors. "Captain Reed. It's been a little while," spoke the base commander, Colonel Archie Heibel. "Archie. I know you know the deal and what we have to do. So what's the problem?" "Come with me." Colonel Heibel led them deeper into the complex towards the main structure. "We started running into some issues about four days ago. Minor power fluctuations at first; sporadic, random. Certain systems or areas of the base weren't getting sufficient power. About 10 hours ago is when things got worse. Some areas lost power entirely. When I wanted to send out a dispatch we lost power to the communication systems and the back-ups. That's why we couldn't call in. We can't find the cause of the problem." Into the command hub for the base there were a handful of people at their stations. The colonel pulled up a holographic display of the base facilities. It was then that Jeremiah first noticed the turian MPs. "We've checked for computer faults, power conduits, even checking the manufacturer's warranties on what isn't listed in black ink." "Are the power failures widespread?" "No. But many were occurring in the science wing. Couldn't find anything out of the ordinary." "Okay. Pull up a list of areas that you saw major power losses and divvy them up with my people. Lieutenant Ford, let's organize some searches. Split up your people, use the base personnel, interview who you have to, see if you can find any signs of sabotage, tampering, or uninvited guests." "Aye aye, sir," spoke Ford, enthusiastically. After leading the marines out of the command center he made sure everyone sync'd up their omni-tools with the power loss data. "Okay, gonna do this tried and true, two by two. I'll take the main science wing with, uh, Miss Lane. Clear?" The marines nodded, and then they split up. "Okay, Miss Lane. So we've got a mystery power loss with no evident reports of damage or tampering. Got any input before we get started?" |

Athena accepted the captain's words as a direct order. More than that, she subconsciously repressed any urge to further speculate. "Yes, sir." she replied softly, and then remained quiet for the rest of the trip. After the briefing she was first to leave, and avoided any social contact thereafter. She wanted to be alone, where nobody might give her an order, even an accidental one. It crossed her mind that she was usually far more sociable, or at least used to be. Only once though. As they approached the base, Athena's mindset swung even more towards mission-oriented. She saw the ruins, but the only thoughts she had of them were which piles of rubble would be good hiding spots, which statues could be used as sniping perches. She was fully armed and armored. carrying an N7 Hurricane SMG, a Paladin pistol and an M7 Lancer rifle as a holdout weapon in case she ran out of ammo. Most importantly, a Widow anti-material rifle was also attached to her back - her main weapon, but currently she was wielding the SMG. ...
"Trace drainage source from power hubs." she suggested, her voice soft and quiet to the point of creepiness on the coms. "Look for patterns, power transfer logs. If it's being drained, and the base power plant isn't lowering production, then the power must be going somewhere... Although this is just guesswork. I don't usually go on these kinds of missions." |

"Trace drainage source from power hubs." she suggested, her voice soft and quiet to the point of creepiness on the coms. "Look for patterns, power transfer logs. If it's being drained, and the base power plant isn't lowering production, then the power must be going somewhere... Although this is just guesswork. I don't usually go on these kinds of missions." Joe smirked a little as he started leading the pair of them towards the science wing. "Well if it's all the same I'm not usually tasked with finding something strange unless it's some IED. I wouldn't mind a change of pace, though. Those kinds of assignments can end pretty messy." Joe then started heading to the science wing with the ASA operative alongside. He couldn't help but check her out a little bit. And then it clicked that they barely had any moment to pause after picking her up and heading through the Mu Relay. "By the way, the name's Joe Ford," he said while shaking her hand. Connecting several parts of the facility were a couple sealed walkways extending over a dozen meters each. Similar to each "wing" of the facility the walkways would keep the occupants from being exposed outside. Joe didn't quite know why this was necessary seeing as how the planet was perfectly habitable. The science wing, unlike the command center, was a large structure surrounded by smaller connecting prefab shelters that added lab space and storage areas. When the two of them crossed the walkway they were greeted by an army corporal and PFC. "Hello, sir. All personnel are in the common area per protocols. All compartments are ready for an inspection though I don't think you'll find anything. At least, we haven't yet, sir." Almost on cue the lights seemed to flicker off and the sound of systems shutting down could be heard. But before long the lights came back on and sound of the systems starting up again came around. "How often have these been happening, corporal?" "Every few hours or so. Completely random, no idea what's causing it." "And you haven't found any signs of structural damage or system failure?" "None, sir." "Are you absolutely sure?" "Yes, sir. Nothing out of the ordinary." That got Joe a little suspicious. He wasn't about to challenge the opinions of someone who'd been here several months but if this were an 'ordinary' situation then Joe and his ship wouldn't be here. "Alright. Where are the other personnel? The scientists and such?" "They're in the common area. Though I might steer clear of them for now. Some aren't...too keen on something like this interfering in their work." "Well we're all stuck in the same boat so we'll try to get this taken care of quickly. Miss Lane, perhaps you can take the corporal and see to interviewing the scientists on what's happened so we can get their input. I can take the PFC here to start checking service areas to see if there's anything that was missed in their own inspections. How does that sound?" |

Athena turned and stared at him for a second before answering "I'm... Aegis." It was her official codename, and she couldn't bring herself to utter her other name. At that moment, Aegis just seemed to her the right answer, her true identity, with Athena being just an alias. She didn't think about ASA regulations that would have prohibited her from telling the truth regardless, rather it was more her conditioning that influenced her answer. She turned her gaze before he reacted, so she didn't see how well that was received before moving on. While Ford talked to the Corporal Athena was distracted by the lights flickering. Her hearing was enhanced by implants, and she could hear a light clattering coming from above them. It would have been drowned out by the system reboot hum to anyone who wasn't similarly equipped.
"There's something I want to check first." she replied. "Are there maintenance sections or large ventilation shafts above us, and should there be anyone there at the moment? I heard a noise just as the power fluctuated." |

"There's something I want to check first." she replied. "Are there maintenance sections or large ventilation shafts above us, and should there be anyone there at the moment? I heard a noise just as the power fluctuated." Joe thought for a moment and didn't recall hearing anything moments before. "Nobody except military personnel are allowed moving about the facility without escort right now. There's a maintenance shaft that runs between the floors but it's too small for anyone to get in and cause trouble without getting spotted." Joe looked to the corporal, then to Aegis, then back. "Open it up, let's take a look." It took a few moments but the corporal led the duo to an access hatch - a panel made like a door that could be more-easily opened without tools. He then had a crate brought over in lieu of a ladder which would take time to grab and bring over. "After you." "Aegis," spoke Joe with a nod. |

Athena nodded and jumped quickly up, barely touching the crate before pulling herself up, disappearing into the maintenance shaft in a moment. Inside she shone a flashlight on the walls, and immediately noticed the extensive scarring on the shaft walls. "Something's been here." she reported. "Strong and tough enough to carve grooves into the walls. My best guess is either some sort of infiltration mech or an indigenous animal, judging from its stealth on top of that." She turned off the flashlight and poked her head back out of the hatch she came in through. "Lieutenant, I suggest planting motion sensors in these shafts, camera traps or adhesive mines." She felt a bit of a thrill, doing a mission in which she could actually express her own opinions. It was almost novel, because usually even when she was on a long leash and got some of her personality back she didn't quite have anyone to express it towards. |

As Joe watched the lady spook go right to climb into the maintenance shaft he was somewhat taken aback by her eagerness. Maybe she's really a desk jockey and doesn't get out much, he thought. "Something's been here." she reported. "Strong and tough enough to carve grooves into the walls. My best guess is either some sort of infiltration mech or an indigenous animal, judging from its stealth on top of that." Joe then saw her reappear in the hatchway. "Lieutenant, I suggest planting motion sensors in these shafts, camera traps or adhesive mines." Joe was taken aback again by the grocery list she brought up. As he knew he had none of those items on his person he turned and looked to the corporal. "Mines? We got enough people getting worried or irritated with this whole situation and I don't think putting mines in the maintenance shafts will help. And all we have for motion sensors or monitoring equipment that isn't tied to the internal sensors are the heavy units to replace those monitoring the planetside relay-" As the corporal finished that line of thought he pressed a finger to his ear, evidently to catch what was coming in on the comms. "Piechock, here...where? Okay, hang tight I'm heading down. Keep an eye open for...hello? Kip, come in. Kip? Damnit." The corporal looked back to Joe and Miss Lane. "One of my watch teams caught power failure down below in one of the lab areas but I lost comms with him." "Alright then, let's head on below and see what's going on." Joe decided now was a good time to draw his rifle, letting the corporal lead them to the lower labs. Before they got to the area they came across two of the base's soldiers standing outside of a hatch to the lower lab units. One of them had "Kip" on his suit's nameplate. "Kip, what happened?" asked the corporal. "I tried to get you on comms but you didn't answer." "Sorry, Pie. My suit and omni tool lost power. I don't understand, I know they were fully charged. It happened right after we lost power to the block." "How could you not properly charge the suit? It's not exactly rocket science." "Another time, people," interjected Joe. "Someone or something is causing a power failure here and we should probably look for the cause while we can. Miss Lane, if you would." Joe took up a stacking position near the hatch, ready to head in. |

Athena could probably have fashioned a simple motion sensor with her omnitool if she had enough time, but once her suggestion wasn't taken she immediately forgot about it and devoted her full attention to the task at hand. It was the product of somewhat accidental conditioning done to her; one of the handlers hadn't liked it when others turned out to be right. As she followed she started feeling a bit murky, more like she usually was on missions. Her earlier burst of enthusiasm faded and she became slightly more distant, both on the outside and the inside. She felt more like Aegis and less like Athena by the minute, and she hated how slowly it was creeping up on her. At least normally when a handler gives her an order it happens too fast for her to notice. When she heard about the sudden suit power outage she wondered if it had anything to do with the power outage at the same time. It seemed like too much of a coincidence, but she found it hard to come up with a theory. Thinking outside the box wasn't something Aegis was good at. When Lieutenant Ford beckoned her to go through the hatch she did so without a word, barely a gesture of acknowledgement. She looked at the many labs using the flashlight on her Saber rifle. A good number of them held lots of equipment and artifacts that she couldn't identify at all. Most looked intact though, nothing out of the ordinary, no active Prothean or other devices that could drain the power. After looking through quite a few, she spotted something suspicious - a storage area, filled with containers, but someone had opened them up haphazardly and hadn't closed them after. Several were even knocked over. "Over here, found something..." she said in a near-whisper, walking over to a console. "I'm going to check the inventory manifest, see what was supposed to be stored here." It didn't take much creative thinking to realize that someone had been looking for something there, and judging from the remaining closed containers they had probably found it. |

While Aegis went to the manifest Joe checked the rest of the lab, making sure that there wasn't anything out of place. On further investigation he did see in one lab that some equipment had been knocked over. The beam from his rifle's flashlight scanned the room slowly and deliberately. "Over here, found something..." she said in a near-whisper, walking over to a console. Joe followed her. "I'm going to check the inventory manifest, see what was supposed to be stored here." The ASA agent jumped right in, scanning through files and documents as the console flickered to life. "Roger that. I'll check the rest of the lab. Piechock you stay with her. You two, with me," ordered Joe to the other two Army soldiers. Piechock and Joe gave them spare flash lights to use for the search. As the three of them started going through individual lab sections they tried to find anything else that had been touched or was out of the ordinary. Some of the equipment was familiar to Joe from his college days. If asked what they would do he'd be hard-pressed to find an answer. "Sir...!" whispered Kip. "What is it?" asked Joe, also whispering. Something was off. "Storage room over here, I saw 'something' go in there." Something? questioned Joe internally. Not answering the soldier he shone his flashlight on the storage room in question. The three slowly converged on it. After the soldiers stacked up on the door Joe took point to check the storage room. It was a fairly small space, with racks for boxes and items on the sides going to the back wall with only a couple crates actually on the floor. "You sure you saw something?" "Ye-well, I...I don't know. I saw a shadow shift towards the door in the dark." "Hmm." Joe shifted his flashlight beam as much around the room to catch as much as possible, but he couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. "I don't see anything." He lowered his light, turning to Aegis. "Hey, Aegis, find anything over there?" As the lieutenant's focus was elsewhere he didn't see it. From the crevices and spaces between the crates and items in that room masses of small metallic objects pooled to the floor to form a single mass, giving off no sound. With the marine in it's way the form threw itself at the human with a rounded shape, knocking him over. The other soldiers jumped. As the mass turned towards the others one of the soldiers managed to open fire on it. The shots didn't seem to have any effect as it went ahead to clobber the shooter to the floor and knocked aside his comrade before jumping up through the grated door to the utility duct overhead. Joe, somewhat dazed from his assault, scrambled to get back up and went for the duct, nearly prying the door to get it open. When he got his light and weapon up to look he could see but only saw the darkness of the duct down the length of it."Holy shit." When he got back down he cringed some, cradling his right arm. "Kip, Piechock, you okay?" "Yes, sir," they replied. "Well, I think we just had a close encounter with our problem. Ugh-damn..." The full pain from that hit got to him and he accidentally dropped his rifle. Whatever hit him was hard and powerful. But at least he was pretty sure he didn't break anything and the armor seemed to take the brunt of it. Edited by ThatPatriot, Jun 15 2015, 09:57 PM.

"Nothing so far." Athena called back flatly, still browsing the inventory manifest on her omnitool when she heard the shouting and gunfire from nextdoor. She whirled out, rifle in hand, just in time to see the amorphous shape darting out of the door. She fired five shots at it, perfect hits, to absolutely no effect, and watched it climb up the ventilation shaft. Athena knew better than to chase an unknown adversary through a narrow space, so instead she went back to check on the Lieutenant, following after Piechock who did the same. "It got away." she reported, her rifle still smoking. "I don't know what it was, possibly a weaponized nanobot cluster or some other sort of amorphous mech. Likely Prothean, considering the location and the necessary technology to create such a thing." She turned back, keeping watch in case the enemy returned. "Small arms appear to be ineffective against it as well. Next time, techs and biotics only." |

"It got away." reported Aegis, her rifle still smoking. "I don't know what it was, possibly a weaponized nanobot cluster or some other sort of amorphous mech. Likely Prothean, considering the location and the necessary technology to create such a thing." Joe didn't initially respond, groaning and wincing as he was trying to deal with the pain and check if he actually did in fact break something. She turned back, keeping watch in case the enemy returned. "Small arms appear to be ineffective against it as well. Next time, techs and biotics only." "Heh, well, we'll see how that works out...if we get the chance..." After Joe regained his composure he picked up his rifle, holstering it to his back. "Well, I for one have a bunch of questions for whoever was operating this lab and what those sample boxes were all about. So I think it's time we talked to some of the tenants to find out what's really going on here." That meant talking with the lab techs and the main scientists. Sometime later, after getting clearance from the base commander and Captain Reed, Joe and Aegis were in a conference room with the four persons assigned to that lab: a scientist and three assistants. Joe had a guard stationed outside just in case the intruder decided to make a surprise visit. The lead scientist of the group was an asari, Viria Y'Dar. Compared to the other asari lab assistants who were more shades of blue Viria's skin was more purple. Also, whereas the assistants were seated such showing a bit of nervousness Viria was seated as though she was either annoyed or somewhat casual about the situation, legs crossed and arms crossed over her chest. "Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. I'm Lieutenant Joseph Ford and this is Aegis. I wanted to speak to all of you because you're the assigned personnel of Lab 3-4A. Just a little bit ago we went down there to find the lab without power and most of the sample boxes you had stored there were empty." Two of the assistants looked to the others. "We didn't have much time to check the place as we then encountered something of an...automaton of sorts. Neither of us got a good look at it but what we could see was that it is almost fluid in shape but comprised of many metallic parts and it can move very fast." Joe involuntarily flinched a bit from the bruise he was getting from that thing hitting him. "Now, we're not sure what it was doing in there or whether it took what was in those sample boxes of yours so can you shed a little light on your work?" Viria spoke up while the assistants were looking at each. "Well I don't know whether what you saw was after our work. We've been studying mineral samples taken from around the immediate compound, elsewhere in the city nearby, and other locations around the planet. Much of what we collected are inert, rather ordinary compounds that you can find on hundreds of other worlds." "And what's all this for?" Viria shrugged a little. "Getting a more-complete listing of the elements composing this planet, maybe even discover some new ones. Since Ilos has been detached from the universe for a long time we don't have any current or complete information about this world. "I know a number of other colleagues who'd give much of their career to be here." "So you're a geologist, mostly?" "Partly. It's one of my older concentrations that I'm accredited for but it is one of my favorites and I have been at it for a while. I worked for two prior colonial investment companies completing full mineral surveys on worlds prior to the Reaper War." "I see." Edited by ThatPatriot, Jun 15 2015, 09:56 PM.

Aegis found herself in a strange situation. In her current state she wasn't capable of small talk, but nonetheless she was now caught in such a situation. It was almost foreign to her, she didn't see how what kind of profession this researcher had was relevant to the mission. There was a small part of her that wanted to join in, however. If there was one thing Athena was hungry for, starving really, it was social contact, and the more she was exposed to this rather than combat the more Athena grew stronger and Aegis diminished. "Was there any site that was unusual in some aspect?" she asked, speaking up for the first time since they had left the storage area. "A prothean beacon was still active here, it's not farfetched that some other prothean technology, some automated defense system perhaps, also survived." |
