Is this right, Andre?

Unless the problem states that x>0, we cannot say that these solutions to the "impossible" equation is valid. Why? Remember how Mr. Williams always says that x is like a box (it really is...).

Squaring x=A (A is a real number) gives us:

x^2=A^2

However, this oddly could be the square of both

x=A and x=-A

Because squaring works only one way, it can be called as an IRREVERSIBLE STEP. This is why you must always try to prove something from given facts to something we want--not from something we want to the givens.

Solutions of x^2=A^2 are:

A and -A

However, only A can be the right solution. -A is just a piece of garbage (pronounced garbaaage) that results from an irreversible step. We call these garbage solutions EXTRANEOUS SOLUTIONS. Because you can always end up with extraneous solutions, it is always important to double-check all the solutions for garbage to sweep out.
Is math for smarty pants?

visit AOPS!

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference
