Anyway, at dinner we discussed whether, in the next 50 years, robots will need to have rights.

That's why I mentioned tricky grammatical tricksies.

And no, obviously not. My dad worked for DARPA, which is basically the frontier for robotics in the U.S., and they are NO WHERE near even having independant AI, they are QUITE content with tethered or remote robots, so, no, robots in the next 50 years will barely even advance to near AI.

50 years is a long time for robotics.
But if and when robots reach AI, will they need rights?

When they reach AI, they will be far too primitive to do anything. After around 100 yrs. of being intelligent, yes, because they will basically be another race, and we will have played god.
